Hoovec ist zum Nahrungsmittel, direktor des Landes ernannt worden und ihm werden weitgehende Macht bcfugnisse erteilt werden. Vor sei ner Ernennung hat Herr Hoovcr mit einem Sonderausschuß der Getreide börsen stattgefunden und über das Resultat der Unterredung wird jetzt folgendes bekannt gemacht: Die au. szergcwöhnlichcn Verhältnisse, welche dazu zwingen, die Lebensrnittel des Landes sorgfältig zu hüten, haben , die Vertreter des Getreidchandels zur Ueberzeugung gebracht, dasz es notwendig ist, eine Nahrungsmittel kommisjion zu schassen, die des Welt krieges wegen mit den nötigen Ve fugnissen ausgestattet sein muß, aber nur für die Tauer des Krieges. Die Vertreter des Getreidchandels sind überzeugt, daß, falls nichts vcr schwendet, sondern sorgsam Haus ge halten wird, genügend Getreide für den Heimbcdarf im Lande sein wird, und auch genügend, um die Alliier, ten damit zu versehen. Deshalb soll, te die ganze Angelegenheit der Nc gierung unterstehen. Die Anhänger der Regierung im Senat sind heute denn auch bestrebt, den ?!ahrungs mittcldirektor Hoover in der Aus Übung seiner neuen Pflichten an Hand zu gehen und vor allen Tin gen dafür zu sorgen, daß die auf die Controlle der Nahrungsmittel Bezug habende Bill baldmöglichst zum Ge fetze erhoben wird. Senator Gore, der die betreffende Bill einreicht, hat viele nebensächliche Dinge aus der Bill gestrichen und nur jene Para. graphen in derselben belassen, von welchen er Grund hat, anzunehmen, daß sie im Senat nicht beanstandet werden. Es sind dieses: Dem Präsidenten ist alle Gewalt verliehen worden, die Lebcnsnnttcl des Landes sorgfältig zu hüten und für deren Konservierung zu sorgen. . Aufnahme eines Zensus aller Nahrungsmittel, die sich in den Ver. Staaten befinden. Cs sollen Maßnahmen getroffen werden, zu verhindern, daß Nah. rungsmittcl wahrend der Kriegszeit aufgestapelt werden. Der Streik von elwa 10,000 Schneidern, der seit mcyreren Wochen währte, kam ge stern abend nach einer Besprechung .P.ischen Arbeitgebern und den Schneidern an der Regieningsvertre Ut teilnahmen zuin .Ende. - sür nötig befindet, bestimmen, wie viel Mehl in den Mühlen gemahlen werden soll. Der Präsident aber behält noch weitere Machtbefugnisse vor. Es ist icdoch der Wunsch der Regierung, daß die oben angegebenen Punkte vom Senat vor allen Dingen berück, sichtigt werden, um Hoover Gelegen hcit zu geben, mit seiner Arbeit zu beginnen. Amerikanische Schiffe in China interniert! Dieselben wurde auf Veranlassung der japanischen Regierung entwaffnet. Washington, 21. Mai. Im Staats. Departement wurde heute ' bekannt gegeben, daaß amerikanische Kriegs, schiffe, hauptfächlich Kanonenboote, in chinesischen Gewässern entwaffnet und einer gewissen Art von Jnternicrung durch ihre eigenen Besatzungen un terworfen werden. Es geschah dies auf Veranlassung der Regierung Ja pans, die wissen wollte, ob die Ver. Staaten, die sich im Kriege befinden, die chinesischen Gewässer auch weiter verwenden wollen. Japan hatte hierbei geltend ge macht, daß im Falle die Kriegsschiffe dieses Landes besondere Behandlung und Privilegien erhalten sollten, die. selben Begünstigungen auch den ja panischen Kriegsschiffen zuteil werde. Ein die holländischen und skandi. navischen Sozialisiert repräsentieren, der Ausschuß hat ein langes Mani fest erlassen, in dem die Gründe dar gelegt werden, die zur Einberufung eines Kongresses führten. Veranlaßt wurde sie namentlich durch Appelle von mit der Jnterna tionalen affiliicrtcn Genossen in den Vereinigten Staaten, Italien, der Schweiz, Bulgarien, Portugal, Ruß land, Großbritannien, den britischen Kolonien, den Niederlanden, Sch!vc den, Norwegen, Dänemark und den südamerikanischcn Republiken. Der Zweck geht dahin, die Jntcr. nationale wieder neu zu beleben zu dcnl Behufe, die vereinte Kraft der Arbeiter zur Geltung zu bringen, in erster Linie für Herbeiführung eines allgemeinen Friedens. Vorbereitende Konferenzen der verschiedenen Parteien gehen voraus. Es gilt, Stellung zur Wcltkrisis zu nehmen und die Möglichkeit der Her bciführnng eines allgemeinen Frie dcns zu erwägen. Eine Abordnung des russischen Ausschusses der Arbeiter und Solda ten wird dieser Tage erwartet. London, 21. Mai. Ein Sectrcf fen zwischen deutschen und französi schen Torpedobooten ain Sonntag morgen wurde , gestern aus Berlin wie aus Paris gemeldet. Wie die sranzösische Admiralität berichtet, wurde ein französisches Torpedoboot leicht beschädigt. Berlin beschreibt das Tressen als ein Vorpostcngcfccht an der Küste von Flandern. Die französischen Schiffe wurden, w:c der dcutiche Be richt besagt, mehrfach getroffen, doch die deutschen Fahrzeuge blieben un beschädigt. Paris behauptet scrner, daß die deutschen Schifte nach einem kurzen Treffe'! ,4 mit voller Kraft davon dampften. Ueber die Größe der leichten Beschädigung" verlautet in dem Pariser Bericht nichts. Paris, 21. Mai. Der französische Dampfer Colbcrt" bet französische militärische Passagiere an Bord hat te, ist am L0. April im Mittelländi. schcn Meer von einem deutschen Tauchboot torpcdicrt und versenkt worden. Bei dem Untergang fan den 61 Personen den Wcllcntod. Aus dcm Admiralitätsbcricht ergibt sich, daß der Eoulbert".i,n Dienste der französischen Admiralität stand und eine Anzahl Militärpcrsonen als Passagiere an Bord hatte. Unter den 51 Umgekommenen befand sich der Marine Hilfslcutnant Eommelin, der Kommandant des Dampfers. Die Nachricht daß die schwedischen Dampfer Vesterland", Aspen" und Viken" mit Getreidcladungen sür England von deutschen Tauchbooten versenkt wurden, ist Samstag abend hier eingetroffen irnd hat viel Un willen erregt. Die sichere Ankunft der drei Dampfcr, welche unter dem kürzlichen Gegenseitigkcitsvertrag mit England, wonach die englischen Schis fe im Bothni schen Meerbusen freige lassen werden sollten, ebenfalls frei gegeben wurden, war hier nnt gro ßer Spannung erwartet worden. In dem Bericht heißt es, daß acht Mann mit dem Vikcn" und zwei Mann mit dcm Vesterland" untcrgegan gen find. Der letztere Dampfer war Eigentum des früheren Marmenn nisters Boström. Die Zeitungen ver. urteilen durchwegs die Versenkungen. Das Stockholm Tidmngen", ein Pro-Alliicrten Blatt, bezeichnet die selben als der Tciltschcn feige Tat gegen Schweden" und erklärt, daß ein Land, das eine solche. Tat begeht, zn allem fähig sei." Der. russische Ministerpräsident Lvoff hat folgende Erklärung erlas sen: Die Regierung betrachtet es als ihre erste Pslicht, die Armee und Flotte zu reorganisieren den Feind außer Landes zu treiben und die Al liierten wirksam zu unterstützen. Ein freies Rußland wird nicht gestatten, daß die vom Feinde erorberten Ge biete unter deren Joch verbleiben, das infolge der verbrecherischen Miß Wirtschaft des alten Regimes verlo ren gegangen ist. Auch kann der Provisorischen Regierung das Schick sal Belgiens, Serbiens und Runiä niens nicht gleichgiltig sein. Die an der Front bestehende Was fenruhe, die dem deutschen Reichs kanzler Veranlassung bot, seiner Idee über den Abschluß eines un ehrenhaften Sonderfriedens mit Rußland Ausdruck zu verleihen, muß aufhören. Neunzehn Personen, die sich mit Waffen der Anshcvnng wiorr setzen, verhaftet. Tallas, Texas, 21. Mai. Sin bewaffneter Aufstand gegen die Ein führn,,- und Durchführung des Zwangdienstcs im westlichen Teil von Texas ist von den Bundesauto ritätcn unterdruckt worden, wie Samstag abend hier bekannt wurde. Als Resultat der Enthüllung die ser Verschwörung, welche, wie. man glaubt, von Deutschen sinanzicrt ist (natürlich, anders kann es ja nicht sein), befinden sich hier sieben Mann im Gefängnis, während zwölf in Rotan, Fisher County, festgenommen wurden. Hickcy, Redakteur der sozia listischcn Zeitung Rcbel", welch unter der Anklage der Verschörung steht, wurde gegen P0,000 in Frei heit gelassen.
