Die Zeitungen müssen Wastnnaton, 9. Mai. Das Mit. iel- und WegeKomitee des Neprä jentantenhauses hat gestern einstim. mig den Entwurf für die Kriegs. fteuer.rlage angenommen. Die selbe geht heute dem Hause zu und wiro morgen zur Beratung rom men. Man hofft, dah, das Haus die Vorlage, welche die Erhebung -von $1,800,000,000 Steuern der verschiedensten Arten zur Deckung der Kriegskosten vorsieht, in wem gen Tagen annehmen wird, wenn e3 auch naturgemäß betreffs der einzel nen Bestimmungen teilweise zu sehr erregten Debatten kommen dürfte. Einfuhrzölle nro 10 Prozent erhöht. Alle jetzt bestehenden Steuern ha. ben eine Erhöhung erfahren, und verschiedene neue. Steuern sind hin. zugekommen, um die Niesensumme aufbringen zu können. So sind die Zölle auf alle eingeführten Artikel um zchn Prozent erhöht worden, während auf alle bisher frei einge führten Waren ein Zoll von zehn Prozent des Wertes angesetzt werden soll. Man hofft, durch diese (Mo-1 hung im Verlaufe des Krieges 24,0,000,000 Mehreinkommen gewinnen. Xii I Erhöhung der Einkommensteuer. ": Die Einkommensteuer hat eben falls eine beträchtliche Erhöhung er. fahren, und bei größeren Einkorn men ist noch eine Zusatzsteuer ange setzt worden. So werden verheirate, te Leute, welche bisher erst bei einem Einkommen von $4,000 Steuern be zahlen mußten, jetzt schon bei einem Einkommen von $2,000 an besteuert!. Bei unverheirateten Leuten ist das ' 'cuerpflichtige Einkommen von $3,. I00 an auf $1,000 herabgesetzt worden. Tie Nonnalstencrn auf Einkommen, welche bisher bei Pri vaqicrsoncn zwei Prozent und bei Korporationen drei Prozent betn:, gen, sind auf das Doppelte, also auf vier resp, sechs Prozent erhöht wor den. Die Zeitungen werden besonders hart angefaßt. Sie sollen auf alle U'oucktwncn für Anzeigen fünf Vro, zent bezahlen, und außerdem wird die Postrate für Zeitungen erheblich erhöht werden. Während dieselbe bisher nach allen Orten einen Cent pro Pfund betrug soll dieselbe, ac nau wie öre Paketraten, nach Ro n.m eingeteilt werden und 2c für die ersten veiöcn Zonen, 4c bis zu fünf ten Zone, 5c bis zur siebenten Zone uno tc vis zur achten Zone be tragen. Für Nöhrenlcitungcn wir für Ocl, usw., sind 5 Prozent der erhobenen Beträge zu zahlen, für elektrische Heizung. Licht, und Kraft dieselbe Steuer. Auch diese sollen, falls an genommen, am 1. Juni in Kraft treten. Die Stempelsteuer für Telephon und Tclegraph.Benutzun beträgt ebenfalls 5 Prozent der Gebühren. Klub nnd Vergnügungssteuern. Auch die Vereine und Klubs blei ben nicht verschont. ReuterS Kor rcspondent telegraphierte am letzten Sonntag: Der heutige Tag war jür Saloniki ereignisreich, denn in einer riesigen Massenversammlung wurde die Absetzung des Königs Konstantin beschlossen. Ueber 40, 000 Personen versammelten sich in den verschiedenen öffentlichen Plätzen und hörten den Reden, die auf die Absetzung des- Königs Konstaiüin abzielten, zu. Die Konservativen und Alldeut, schen sollen wieder sehr gegen den Reichskanzler von Bcthmann Holl weg wühlen. Die Tageszeitung schreibt, daß infolge drei oder vier Tage zu später Mobilmachung we gen der zögernden Politik des Kanz lcrs die Schlacht an der Marne ver loren gegangen sei. Die Truppen, welche dem Eindringen der Russen in Ostpreußen Einhalt gebieten muß ten, hätten genügt, um General v. Klucks Rückzug in einen Sieg um zuwandcln, und in einem solchen Falle wäre der Krieg schnell zum Abschluß gekommen. Von Zürich wird gemeldet, daß der Reichskanzler be reits feine Resignation eingereicht ha be. Das deutsche Kriegsamt hat gestern abend folgenden Bericht vcröffent licht: Front des deutschen Kronprinzen: Nach furchtbaren, schweren Gefechten der letzten paar Tage nahm gestern an mehreren Punkten unserer Linie die Wut der Schlacht etwas ab. An dererseits aber ereigneten sich schwe re Kämpfe nördlich von Craonelle, wo die Franzosen in fruchtlosen und kostenschwcren Angriffen den Versuch machten, uns die Höhcnstcl lungen zwischen Hurtebise und Ers önne zu entreißen. Am Abend und während der Nacht unternahm der Feind mehrere wuchtige lokale An griffe an der Front zwischen Bau xaillon und Borbeny. Westlich von Craonne hatten die Franzosen auch etliche kleine Gcländegewinne zu ver zeichnen, sonst aber zerschellten alle übrigen Sturmangriffe der Feinde an der unvergleichlichen Tapferkeit unserer heldenmütigen Truppen. Bei La Neuville eröffneten die Franzosen gegen unsere Stellungen auf dem Hügel No. 100 und unsere den Hügel begrenzenden Gräben eine furchtbare Kanonade, worauf feind liche Kolonnen zum Sturm ansetzten. Die Sturmangriffe waren vergeb lich: sie wurden unter schweren Ver lusten für den Feind abgeschlagen. In der Champagne nahm das bet dcrscitige Artillcriefeuer an Heftig, kei zu.
