Im Osten wird mit wechselndem Glück gekämpft. Offizieller deutscher Bericht. Berlin, 8. Jult, über London. Das Kricgsamt meldete gestern abend über die Ereignisse auf der Ostfront Folgendes: Armeegruppe des Generals v. Linsingen Em vier hintereinanderliegende Gräben ausweisendes vorgeschobenes Velän de, das sich in der Richtung noch Chartoryök erstreckt, ist von uns auf. gegeben worden, weil der Feind diese Stellung mit überwiegend starken Truppenmassen bedrohte. Unsere dortigen Truppen haben eine neue vorher vorbereitete Verteidignngs linie bezogen. Die russischen An griffe, welche zu beiden Seiten von okul unternommen wurden, bra chm unter unserem Feuer zusammen. Der Verlust der Russen an Toten und Verwundeten war erheblich. Tcr Feind setzt seine militärischen Operationen gegen die Streitkräfte des Feldmarschalls v. Hindenburg fort. Südlich vom Narocz See ha den d Russen zahlreiche Streitkräf te entwickelt, die zum Sturm an setzten; nach einem kurzen aber hitzi. gen Gefecht wurde der Angriff ab gewiesen. Nordöstlich von mor gen und an anderen Punkten der Nordfront gingen die Russen eben, falls zum Angriff über, kamen aber nirgend vorwärts. Armeegruppe deö Prinzen Leo. pold Der Feind unternahm einen schwachen Angriff, da derselbe jedoch leicht abgewiesen wurde, ließen die Russen von weiteren Stürmen ab. Westlicher Kriegsschauplatz. Zu beiden Seiten der Summe kam es zu lebhaften Nachtlämpfen, die für uns nicht ungünstig verliefen. Am hei ßchen ging es südlich von Conta Malaison, Hem und.EstrecS her. Auf dem Oftufer der Maas grif. fcn die Franzosen in weiter Front unsere ihnen entrissenen Stellungen auf dem Kamm der Froide Terre an,' dieselben aber verliefen resul. tatslos. Ebenso wenig vermochten sie etwas beim Sturmlauf gegen un fcre Stellungen in dem Gehölz füd westlich von Vaux zu erreichen; der Feind rannte vergebens in den Tod. Südwestlich von Valencicnnes fin gen wir einen französischen Aero. plan. Bei Peronne uird südwestlich von Rouziere kam es zwischen meh reren Flugzmgcn zu Kämpfen; meh rcre Franzosen wurden zum Abstieg gezwungen. Während der Luftkämpfe im In ni büßten die Teutschen in Luft, kämpfen zwei Acroplane ein; von feindlichen Abwehrgeschützen abge schössen wurde einer und vermißt werden vier. Somit betrug unser Verlust im Monat Juni sieden Aero plane. Während derselben Zeitpe riode verloren die Briten und Iran zosen in Luftgefechten 23 Aeroplane, durch unsere Abwehrgeschütze abge. schössen wurden zehn feindliche Flug, zeuge; innerhalb unserer Linien gin. gen drei feindliche Aeroplane. unfrei, willig nieder; ein Aeroplan wurde dabei erwischt, als er Spione hin. tcr unserer Front landete. Zweiund zwanzig feindliche Acroplane find gut erhalten und befinden sich in unserem Besitz, die übrigen wurden zerstört. Ansicht eines Militärkritikrrs. Berlin, 8. Juli, über London. Der militärische Korrespondent der Zeiding Am Mittag" schreibt über die Knegslage: Die Kampfe nehmen an allen Fronten an Umfang und Heftigkeit zu. Ucbcrall führt der Feind frische Truppen in den Kampf, der nach und nach seinen Höhepunkt erreichen muh. Von allen Seiten wird die größte Kraftcntfaltung ai:f geboten, um eine Entfchcidung her beizuführcn, und die Spannkraft kann unmöglich länger andauern. Nachdem der Militärkritiker die jüngsten offiziellen Berichte von den verschiedenen Kriegstheatern einge hcich beleuchtete, sagt er: Es ist noch zu früh, über den Ausgang der Kämpfe an den verschiedenen Haupt.' , fronten em entscheidendes Urteil ab 'zugeben. Die Deutschen aber wa ren bisher immer imstande, den feindlichen Massenangriffen im We sten, Osten und Süden Halt zu gc bieten. Weder die Russen noch Iran zosen, Briten und Italiener haben ir. flnalzeim litst-gm "iwf t0m U (HUI gcnd welche ausschlaggebende Erfol. ge auszuweisen, wohingegen in Punk, ten. wo die Teutschen die Offensive ergriffen haben, wie z. B. in Wol hynien und südlich vom Tniefter, ihre Operationen einen erfolgreichen Verlauf genommen haben. Die gegenwärtige Lage der Tin ge fetzt uns in Stand, mit Zuversicht der weiteren Entwickelung entgegen zusehen. Wir dürfen jedoch nicht die Tatsache außer Acht lassen, daß die Feinde gewaltige Anstrengungen nia chcn und alle verfügbaren Kräfte für den fchlicklichen Erfolg einsetzen. Unsere Truppen stehen an allen Fronten einem an Zahl wett mach tigeren Feinden gegenüber und miis sen sich somit auf weitere fchwcre Kämpfe gefaßt machen. Der Militärkritikcr beschäftigt sich mehr mit den Kämpfen an der Ost front als mit denjenigen im Westen darauf hinweisend, daß die russischen Angriffe gegen Feldmarschall v. Hin denburg den Prinzen Leopold von Bayern und Graf Bothmcr den ve weis liefern, über welch eine ungc, hcure Truppcnzahl die Russen im. mer noch verfügen und auch mit Kriegsmaterial gut ausgerüstet sind Er fügt hilizu, daß auf der Hin, denburg Front die russische Kamps- tätigkcit nicht nachgelassen hat, hebt indessen hervor, daß Prinz Leopold die Russen mit sehr schweren Bcrln sten für sie abgewiesen hat und so mit Herr der Situation - ist. Die Käinpfe nehmen am oberen Styr ih rat Fortgang, und die Russen wa ren imstande, kn Fluß ' zu kreuzen und sich an einem Punte' fchzu setzen; die Gegenangriffe aber haben bereits begonnen., Die Russen wur den in Wolhynien und an der Stry. pa Front zurückgeworfen, sagt der Militärkritiker zum Schluß feiner Betrachtungen, und . der Sieg bei Tlumach, südlich vom Dniester, wrd von General Graf Bothmcr nach Kräften ausgebeutet. ' Was die Franzosen sage. Paris. 8. Juli. Wiederholte und mit großer Wucht ausgeführte feindliche Angriffe auf unsere Stel hingen in dein THiaumont Abschnitt zwangen uns zum Rückzug und die Deutschen fetzten sich in den borge schobeuen Gräben fest. Ein Teil derselben aber wurde von uns zu rückerobcrt. (Das sagen die Franzo sen immer, wenn sie die Pariser über das systematische Vordringen der Deutschen beruhigen wollen.) Von der Somme Front ist nichts Neues zu berichten. (Somit kommen die Franzosen dort nicht vom Fleck.) Der englische Kohl. London, ' 8, Juli. Das Kriegs, amt meldete gestern abend: Die bri tischen Schwinghammerschläge gegen die deutschen Linien in dem Abschnitt der Somme hatten zur Folge, daß wir an drei weiteren Punkten Er folge auszuweisen haben; ein Teil der äußerst starken Leipzig Redontc befindet sich in unseren Händen. Der Geländegewinn ist allerdings nicht groß, doch haben die von uns er obertcn Stellungen strategische Be deiltuug. Oestlich von La Boifclle haben die Briten deutsche Gräben in einer Front von 2,000 Aards und einer Tiefe von 500 Nards erobert. In der Gegend von Obillers haben die Briten sich einen Weg bis zu dein genannteil Dorf gebahnt, nach, dem sie feindliche Stellungen in ei ncr Front von 600 Jards genom nien hatten. Nördlich von Fricourt wurde der Feind aus zwei Gehölzen vertriebe?: und mußte drei Linien Gräben aufgeben. Ihn: cntgcgncte der Republika ner Hamilton von Michigan, daß die Demokraten nur deshalb eine Tarif-Kommission befürworteten, weil Präsident Wilson es wünschte und erklärte, daß die demokratischen Repräsentanten nur Funken in des Präsidenten Kometenschweif seien. Während der Demokrat Collier von Mississippi behauptete, daß die demokratische Administration in vier Jahren mehr aufbauende Geschge bung geschaffen habe, als die repu blikanische in vierzig Jahren, spra chm sich die republikanischen Mit. glicder des Hauses dahin aus, daß die Benötigung erhöhter Einkünfte ein klarer Beweis der deinokratischcn Extravaganz und Mißwirtschaft sei. Moore von Pennsylvanien kri tisicrte in längerer Rede die Me xikoPolitik des Präsidenten und be zeichnete die Stmcrvorlage als ein demokratisches Spinngewebe. Wollen unabhängig von anderen Organisationen auf Hughcs' ' Erwöhlnng hinarbeiten. Bridgehampton. N. F.. 8. Juli. Chas. E. Hughcs und Gattin unternahmen gestern eine fast hu, dert Meilen betragende Automobil, tour 'nach dem Somnittheim von Frau Harry Paine Whitney in Nos lnn. N. F., wo sie mit etwa 300 Damen zusammenkamen, welche sie schon von früher kannten, und die ihre Dienste Herrn, Hughes zur Bcr fügung stellten. Während des Nachmittags wurde sofort eine Frauen.Organisation ins Leben gerufen, welche sich Woman's National Committee of the Hughes Alliance" nennt und in allen Staa ten Zweige eröffnen wird. Zweck der Vereinigung ist, unabhängig von allen republikanischen Organisatio nen für die Wahl des Herrn Hughes Propaganda zu machen. Es sind bereits $25,000 zu die. sem Zweck gesammelt worden. Der bisherige Flottcnattochce der deutschen Gesandtschaft' dahier, Ba. ron dc ScnarclensGrancy, wurde nach Washington versetzt, um der Nachfolger von Kapitän Boy-Ed als Flottenattachce des dortigen deut, fchcn Botschafteranites zu werden. (Kapitän Boy-Ed war bekanntlich letzten Dezember auf Ersuchen der amerikanischen Regierung abberufen worden wegen seiner angeblichen Verbindung mit einer deutschen Verschwörung in ' den Ver. In hiesigen militärischen Kreisen sagt man sich: Die oberste deutsche Heeresleitung muß sich gegenwärtig einem fchwic. rigcn und schwer zu lösenden Rät. sel gegenüberstellen. Sie muß sich darüber klar werden, wie sie der nmen, : Hand in Hand arbeitenden Strategie der Alliierten gegenüber treten und die noch verfügbaren deutschen Strcitkrmte am besten der wenden kann. Seit Beginn des Krieges war an Deutschland noch nie die Notwendigkeit herangetreten, ci ner starken doppelten Offensive an der Ost. und Westfront zu bcgcg. nen. General Haig's Meldung: Wir nahmen bei Aubruch des Ta ges eine kräftige Offensive auf", gleich auf die neue russische Offen sive unter General Evert gegen Feld marfchall v. Hindenburg dürfte dem Großen Deutschen Genera lstab eine harte Nuß zu knacken geben. (Hin denburg. Der Russengcneral Evert hat auf einer 100 Meilen Front angegrif fen. Daß für die Deutschen nicht alles gut steht, geht daraus hcrvor, daß nur ganz karge Berichte von der Ost und Westfront dem Publi. knin bekannt gemacht .werden. Den Verlust der Ortschaften Hem und Belloy an der Somme Front hat das Kriegsamt iiur zögernd zuge geben. Die von Rom ,kominende Meldung, wonach sich die ganze deut sche Linie auf der Ostfront auf dem Rückzug befindet, war verfrüht, die Russen aber melden einen Erfolg um den anderen) (Deren Sieges gebrüll wird auch bald aufhören!) In dein offiziellen Berliner Be richt wird zugegeben, daß sich die Deutschen.-aus ciir vorgeschobenen Stellung in dem CzartorySk Ab schnitt zurückgezogen haben, und Pc trograder Meldungen besagen, daß russische Kavallerie Mamevitchi 6c setzt hat; dieses liegt nur 50 Meilen von Kovel. Es ist deutlich zu er kennen (natürlich durch eine rosige Brille mit starken Vergrößerungs gläsern), daß die russische Offen sive auf Barnobitschi, Kovel und Lembcrg zu, 1 unterstützt durch den Zufammcnbruch der Oesterreich: (die aber eine zähe Lebenskraft ent wickeln) die ganze deutsche Linie im Osten gefährdet ist. Während der letzten paar Tage haben die Russen wieder 20,000 Gefangene gemacht. Die Frage,' ob Großbritannien mit genügend Munition versehen ist, um die Offensive in energischer Wei. se fortsetzen zu können, beantwortet der Sekretär des Hilfs-Mumtions. Ministers in folgender Weise: Unsere Produktion von Munition und Geschützen hat noch lange nicht den Höhepunkt erreicht. Falls es der Infanterie nicht gelingen sollte, die Teutschen außer Landes zu ja gen und über den Rhein zu wer fen. dann wird dieses die britische Artillerie zu Wege bringen. Wir werden eine so riesige Masse von Geschützen haben, daß fie in eine Reihe gestellt eine Linie bilden kön nen, die von der Somme bis zum Meer hinreicht. (Stellen die Deut schen alle den Russen. Briten und Franzosen abgenommenen Geschütze in eine Reihe, dann ist die Linie ebenso groß, wie fie der großschnau. zige Engländer angibt.) Der Se krctär sagt ferner, daß 90 neue Ar. senale eingerichtet worden sind und daß 4000 von der Regierung kon trollierte Gewehrfabriken und Artil. leriewerkstätten Munition und Ge. schütze für die Regierung herstellen. Im Jahre 1014 bezifferte sich die in Munitionsfabriken angestellte Ar. beiterzahl auf rund 2.000,000, heilte aber würden 3.500,000 Per. Zonen in denselben beschäftigt. v. Pap? an der Front. Im Haag, über London, 8. Juli. Die von London aus verbreitete Behauptung, daß Hauptmann v. Papen, der frühere Militär-Attachee der deutschen Botschaft in Washing. ton, in Holland eine deutsche Pro paganda leite, wird von der hiest. gen deutschen Gesandtschaft mit der Erklärung widerlegt, daß sich der Hauptmann seit seiner Rückkehr von Amerika an der Front befinde. Hughes sei tens des progressiven Nationalkomi- tecs hat augenscheinlich nicht den Beifall aller Bull Mooscr gefunden. Matthcw Haie, amtierender Vor sitzcr des progressiven Nationalkomi. tecs, kritisierte gestern in einer öf. fentlichen Bekanntmachung an die Dclegaten der progressiven National konvention die Handlungsweise des Komitees, das Hughes ohne jede Er mächtigung oder Berechtigung in dossiert habe. Hale hatte kürzlich eine Bcsprc. chung mit Vance McCormick, dem Vorsitzer des demokratischen Natio nalkomitees und behauptet, daß das progressive Nationalkomitee ohne die Ermächtigung der Delegaten oder der Staatsorganisationen, welche überhaupt nicht befragt wurden, ei genmächtig gehandelt habe. Die Bekanntmachung schließt mit folgenden Worten: Der Versuch einer kleinen Grup pe Leute, die progressive Parteiorga nisation, dem republikanischen Kan didaten in einer Weise auszuliefern, welche gegen die hauptsächlichsten Grundprinzipien der progressiven Partei verstößt, ist eine Beleidigung sür die Aufrichtigkeit aller Progref. fivcn." Um das Ansammeln längerer Linien von Leuten, die Fleischkarten besitzen, vor den Flcischläden zu vermeiden, wodurch der Verkehr mitunter ins Stocken geriet, find jetzt numerierte Karten ausgegeben worden, und es wird täglich bekannt gemacht werden, auf welche Nummern" am nächsten Tage Fleisch geliefert werden wird. Auf Zirkularen wird auch genau an gekündigt, wie sich die Kunden ver hüllen sollen, um nicht lange .warten zu brauchen. ' ' Spareinlagen in Deutschland wachsen! Im Haag, 8. Juli, über London. Das Organ der deutschen Spar banken, die Zeitung Sparkasse", kündigte an, daß die Spareinlagen im zweften Kriegsjahr mehr gcsrie gen find, als je in einem Jahre in Fried enszciten. Die Statistik zeigt, daß die aus den Städten und In dustriebczirkcn kommenden Einlagen ollein eine Zunahme von 288,000 neuen Einlegern zeigen, und im Gesamt 6,280,000 Einleger. Es wurden 2,500,000 Mark mehr ein. gelegt, als aus den Sparbanken ge. zogen wurden, und , das in den Sparbanken befindliche Kapital hat sich im Ganzen um 3,250,000.000 Mark vermehrt. Flotten sekrctär Daniels hat dem Senat auf Verlangen einen Bericht über die Treffsicherheit ' der , verschiedenen Schiffe der Flotte eingereicht. Die Schlachtschiffe der atlantischen Flotte erzielten folgendes Resultat: Vorzüglich Arkansas, Gcorgia, New Iork und Texas. Gut -7- Dclaware, New Hamp. shice. Nhode Island und Wyoming. Ziemlich gut Nebraska und New Jersey. Unbefriedigend Utah, South Carolina and Louisiana. Schlecht Florida, Kansas. Mi Carolina und Louisiana. Die Resultate der armierten Schif. fe der pazisischen Flotte und des Kreuzes San Diega werden als vor züglich bezeichnet. Omahcr ertrunken. Crawford. Nebr., 8. Juli. Der Bäcker Daniel Mikkelsen von Oma ha, welcher sich feiner Gesundheit wegen mit Frau und zwei Kindern über einen Monat in Crawford auf hielt, stürzte gestern nachmittag beim Angeln von einem schlüpfrigen Floß in den etwa 15 Fuß tiefen See und ertrank. Der dreißigjährige Verunglückte hinterläßt außer seiner Frau und seinen zwei Kindern feine in Süd-Omaha wohnenden Eltern. Die Leiche wird nach Omaha zur Beisetzung überführt werden. Aebraska Regiment Washington, 8. Juli. Staats. sckretär Lansing ließ gestern dem mexikanischen Gesandten Arredondo die Antwort auf die letzte Note Car ranzas zugchen, welche derselbe so fort nach der Stadt Mexiko weiter übermittelte. Dieselbe ist kurz und im freundlichen Tone abgefaßt. Die Bundesregierung drückt in der Antwort ihre Befriedigung über die glückliche Wendung aus, welche die Verhältnisse zwischen den beiden Republiken genommen. ' Vorher hat te Herr Lansing dem Kabinett die Antwort vorgelegt, welche die Bil ligung aller Mitglieder fand. Man glaubt hier allgemein, daß die diplomatischen Verhandlungen zil einer beiderseitig befriedigenden Löfung führen werden. Carranza bittet um Unterstützung. Der mexikanische Gesandte Arre dondo hat im Anschluß an die ge stern gemeldete Niederlage der mexi kanischen Regicrungstruppen, welche dieselben von Villisten bei Corrali tes erlitten, die Bundesregierung im Auftrage Carranzas ersucht, die anrerikanische Grenze zwischen Bo quillas und Ojinaga schärfer über wachen zu lassen, um einen Einfall zu verhüten; er, Carranza, werde ebenfalls sein Bestes in dieser Hin ficht tun.
