Die Herailbildung von Lehrern für unsere Volksschulen, die imslan de sind, in deutscher sowie in cngli scher Sprache ersolgrcich zu unter richten, ist die Aufgabe der Anstalt. Ihre Zöglinge werden mit den Örundjiiaen der modernen Päda gigik dertrarrt gemacht. Tie Bor Bildung derselben zu Lehrern des Teutschen erheischt es. daß sie mit deutschem 2kijJe erfüllt werden lind Achtunz und Liebe für das deutsche Lolk und seine Kultur empfinden. Während öie Anstalt dieser Förde Ring nach Kräften nachzukommen fich bemüht, so beweist ilir Lehr gang doch auch, daß sie es sich ande. rerseitS angelegen sein labt, den speziellen Bedürfnissen der amerika Nischen Schule gerecht zu werden. Hunderten von jungen Lehrern und Lehrerinnen hat das Seminar seit feiner Gründun? im Jahre 1878 ihr? berufliche Vorbildung gegeben, die jetzt begeisterte und treue Mit arbeitgr an dem. großen örziehimgs wZ der öffentlichen und privaten -Lehranstalten unseres Landes find. In feiner Vereinigung deutschen und amerikanischen Wesens steht das Seminar einzig unter öen Lehrer bildungsanftalten des Landes da. Die überaus großen Erfolge seiner Abiturienten in ihrer Lchrthätigkeit hat ihm don Jahr zu Jahr eine immer größere Schülerzahl zugeführt, und mit der wachsenden Erkenntniß der Bedeutung deutscher Kulrurwerks und den daraus folgen den höheren Anforderungen an den deutschen . Sprachunterricht in linie ren Schulen wächst auch seine eigene Bedeutung. Strebsame junge Leute, nxlche die Neigung hären, sich dem schweren aber schönen Lehrerberufe &x widmen, und -den Aufnahmebe Angnngen nachkommen zu können glauben, werden freundlichst ersucht, sich mit dem unterzeichneten Tirek tor des Lehrerseminars baldigst schriftlich oder mündlich in Verbin dung zu setzen. Der Unterricht ist kostenfrei. Aufnahme in die Seminarklassen finden alle Inhaber von Diplomen gutstehender High Schools, sofern ihre Kenntnisse sie befähigen, auch an dem in öer deutschen Sprache ertheilten Unterricht theilzunehmen. Durch einen kürz lich gefaxten Beschluß 'der Erzie hmgsbehörde' (Board of Rcgents) von New Fork wird die Arbeit des Seminars mit zwei CollegeJahren an sämmtlichen Hochschulen dieses Staates akkredirt. Die Staatsschul lehürde von Wisconsin gewährt den Abiturienten des Lehrerseminars das unbeschränkte StaaMehrerzeug niß auf Lebenszeit. Offenbar ist er es nicht. Und die Verfassung verfilzt, daß er nur solange sein Amt behalten soll, ctt er sich gut führt. " Vor der Jndufkrial Relation Commission", die soeben in der Fabrik stadt Paterson in 5!em Jersey ihre Sitzungen hielt, erklärte rin Mitglied der .Jndustrial Workers of the World", er würde sich nicht scheuen, eine Fabrik mit Dynamit zu zerstören, wenn ihm ein solcher Gewaltakt als notwendig erscheinen sollte, um einen Streik zu gewinnen. Ein anderer Mann, ein Unternehmer, sprach vor derselben Kominission die Ucberzeu gung aus, .technische gesetzliche Einschränkungen" sollten nicht im Wege stehen, wenn es fich darum handle, solche Männer wie die Jndustrial Workers of the World" los zu werden. Der Vorsitzer der Kommission, Herr Walsh, bemerkte dazu: es bestehe kein Unterschied zwischen den beiden Aeußerungen. Es ist erfreulich, daß die Kommission einen Vorsitzer mit fo klarem Blick hat. Vielen guten Bürgern kommt die Zerstörung einer Fabrik weit schlimmer vor als die Uebertrctimg der Polizeigemalt bei der Lchandlung von Personen, welche den Unwillen der öffentlichen Mcinuug auf sich ge zogen haben: aber viele Nationen haben in der Vcrzangi'nhcit erfahren, daß die Ansicht eine falsche ist. Besitztum mag sehr wertvoll sein und ge schliche Einschränkung der Polizeigewalt mag als eine alberne Formsache erscheinen: aber wenn diese Formsache" einmal fahren gelassen wird, dann wird der Vcsitz bald ohne Schutz und somit wertlos sein. Nicht? führt schneller zu privater Gesetzlosigkeit als offizielle Gesetzlosigkeit, als Anma ßiing von Gewalt, welche die Polizei gar nicht besitzt." ' Wenig Aussicht für nationale Prohibitiv. Ebenso wie Underwood, soll der Präsident auf schleunige Abs:iinrng über HobsonS berühmten Antrag zur Einführung der nationalen Prohi bition dringen. Und zwar in der jetzigen Form, die eine ungeheure Ver kürzung der Staaienrechte zur Folge haben würde, und schon dar,:m vielen, die im übrigen sich mit Vergnügen in daS Erperiment stürzen werden, nicht genehm ist. Darum kann mit Bestimmtheit damit gerechnet ' werden, daß der Antrag die nötige Stimmenzahl nicht findet. Der Präsident will, ebenso wie Underwood, die Frage auZ der Welt geschafft sehen, damit sie keine Rolle in den nächsten Kongreßwahlen zu spielen vermag. Anders sollen die Empsindungen der Kongreßleute sein, die mit Zittern und Zagen daran denken, baß, wie immer sie stimmen, sie einen Teil ihrer Konstituenten gegen sich aufbringen. Eigentlich aber brauchen sie diese Angst gar nicht zu haben. Die Heiligkeit der Staatenrechte ist ein alter demokrati scher Glaubenssatz, und es zeigt von dem taktischen Verständnis deS Präs,, denkn, daß er auf die Abstimmung über die jetzige Fassung deS Antrage, rhne Abänderung, dringt, so daß die Kongreßleute seiner Partei mit dieser Begründung den Angriffen der Wasserfanatiker entgegentreten können. Außerdem aber können sie Ermutigung nicht nur in den Beschlüssen deS D. A. Nationalverbandes, sondern auch in denen der katholischen Vereins verbände finden, die, sehr energisch Stellung gegen Prohibition nehmen. Die 22. Jahresversammlung deS Verbandes von Illinois, vor zwei Wochen, wie jetzt die deS Verbandes von,Ohio nahmen die folgenden Beschlüsse an: L Wir ersuchen die Bundessenatoren und die Mitglieder deS Kon greffcS unseres Staates, ihren Einfluß zu gebrauchen, damit die dem Kongreß vorliegende .SHepard.Hobson Resolution", einen Zusatz zu der Konstitution der Vereinigten Staaten bezweckend, nicht angenommen wird. 2. Die Vorlage, welche nationale Prohibition einsöhren will, ist den Grundprinzipien ie amerikanischen Volkes, sowie den natürlichen Gesetzen widersprechend. Die Anahme der Vorlage wäre ein gefährlicher Präce denzfall für die Annahme weiterer Aus!ahmegesetze-und deshalb höchst bedauerlich und von weittragender Bedeutung. 3. Wir sind entschieden für Mäßigkeit in allen Genüssen und der langen die strenge Regulierung aller öffmtlichen Lergnügungslokale im Rahmen der bestehenden Gesetze. ' ;j ' . 4. Wir verkennen nicht, daß die Nnmäßigkeit im Essen und Trinken kln weitverbreitetes Uebel ist.
