Ei ist die bai Qilü, ein Äaterial zur Herstellung klektrischer Widerstände Die Zuverlässigkeit dieser Widersiände ist in der Gleftro technif bekanntlich sehr wichtig. Silit besteht, wie schon der Name endeutct. im wesentlichen aus ili zium, dem Elemente der Jliefelfaurt. Ten AuZgang bildet das von Henri Moissan in seinem elektrischen Ofen zuerst hergestellte Siliziumkarbid. Um ti zu einer formbaren Masse zu gestalten, gab man ihm anfangs einen Zusatz von reinem Silizium. aber las ergab den Nachteil, daß sich der elektrische Widerstand der Mischung unter dem Einfluß des Luftsticksiof sei allmählich veränderte. Dieses Hindernis beseitigte man, indem man die Masse zuvor in einer .Hölle" von Stickstoff brannte, wodurch eine rcei tere Einwirkung dieses Gases aus der Atmosphäre vermieden wurde. ' Aber jetzt war man nicht zufrieden, denn die gewonnenen Körper waren noch nicht genügend unveränderlich, wenn sie dauernd stark erhitzt wur den. das werden sie aber, wenn es rnif ihre Benutzung zum Heizen ankommt Endlich wurde das Pro blem gelöst, indem man Siliziumkar fcid, Silizium und Kohlenstoff mischte und unter Anwesenheit von Kohlenoxyd auf die hohe Temperatur von 1500 Grad (Schmelzpunkt des Palladiums) brachte. Was jetzt er zielt wurde, war ein Stoff von gleichmäßig hohem elektrischen Wider stände. bedeutender Feuerfestigkeit und Unempfindlichkeit gegen die Ein slüsse der Luft. , So bietet Silit sich als ein Ma tcrial an., das verschiedenen Zwecken dienen kann? einmal zur Erzeugung von elektrischen Widerständen, bei denen die Belastung sehr hoch oder sehr lang ist, zweitens speziell für elektrische Heiz widerstände bis zu 1400 Grad, und drittens feuerfestes, von jähen Temperaturschwankungen richt beeinflußtes. Dabei ist auch seine Bruchfestigkeit bedeutend, denn ti verträgt Belastungen bis zu 800 Kilogramm auf den Quadratzenti et. So wird man es denn zu elektrischen Heizkörpern in jeder be liebigen. Form und Größe. als Sicherung gegen Ueberspannung, als Widerstände für Blitzableiter und Schaltvorrichtungen benutzen. In der Gastechnik fertigt man aus Silit Rohre bis zu 6 Fuß Länge, die cutzerordentlich dicht und zugleich lacht sind, da das spezifische Gewicht des Silits nur wenig mehr als das Zweiundeinhalbfache des Wassers ist. Die ober Aegwn des Hauies schien wie ausge' siorben. Er tastete sich in vollständi ler Finsternis weiter. Dann sah er äber sich einen Lichtschimmer. Joß begann vom Kops bis zu den Füßen zu zittern, aber er schlich wei tcr hinauf und blickte dann durch ras Geländer. Er sah durch eine offene Tür in ein Zimmer hinein, in dem alles weiß rar. Das Feuer im Kamin war niedergebrannt, ein flackerndes Nacht' !cht stand auf dem Kaminsims. In einem kleinen, weihen Bett am ferneren Ende des Zimmers lag das flinb. Vorsichtig kroch er die Treppe vol !ends m?vr. und dann stand er in eer. offenen Tür. , Er machte ein leichtes Geräusch, aber das Kind rührte sich nicht. Dann stahl er sich hinein. -Des Kindes Kleider lagen sauber zusam mengefaltet auf einem Sthl.. Er erriet, wo sich die Perle befand: an ihrem Halse, wo ti 'sie vorher ge sehen hatte. Eine Schere ', fesselte seine Augen. Er nahm sie an sich und schlich zum Vettchen, beugte sich nieder und hielt den Atem an. Da lag die Perle halb versteckt unter den zarten Spitzen des Nacht hemdeS, das das Kind trug, und hob und senkte sich, wie es atmete. Seine Hand tastete sacht hanach, hob sie empor, und seme Augen gin zen zwischen ihr und dem Gesicht der Kleinen hin und her. . Die Scher; klickte, er hatte fest zu drücken. : Im nächsten Augenblick schlüpfte ir aus dem Zimmer die Perle in seiner Tasche. . Zwei Stufen war er schon hinunter, ehe kr sich umzusehen ragte , In diesem selben Augenblick fiel vaö verlöschende Feuer im Kamin mit leichtem Geprassel, in sich zu samnien. ..- Das Kind fuhr erschreckt in ' die Höhe, griff mit den Händen um sich und ossne die Augen weil. l? fifc in? Et trug ein langes. schleppendes Nachtgewand. mit vielen zarten Spitzen daran. 1aS el'beiin Gehen wie ein Schleppkleid emporhob. Langsam kam et auf die Treppe zu. während Joß sich enz 'da da Ge länder schmiegte. Einen Augenbl:! färchtcte er. von ihm entdeckt zu wer den. Aber eS giiig, ohne nach ihm binzublicken. auf eine Tür zu, öffnete si, und enthüllte einen helleileuchte' ten Raum, in dem ein offener Ar leitzkorb auf dem Tisch stand. .Sucht ihr Wärterin", knurrte Joß innerlich, .ung das leichtfertige Ding treibt sich herum." Das Kind kam mit enttäuschtein Gesichlchen zurück und ging in sein Sck-lasjimmer. Jliß beobach!k!e ti wie oebannt. Er wag! nicht, sich zu bewegen, t'i es trieftet im Bett war und ihn nicht so deutlich bören konnte. Er sah es das Schutzgitter vom Kaminfeuer entfernen, sch, wie es ten Feuerhaken nah! und die Glut heftig rüttelte Im nächsten Auaenblick war es ge sa,kden. Dez Kindes langes Nochtge ivand King dabei dem Feuer bedenk lich nade. Eine glübenoe KoKle fiel durch die Stäbe, und legte sich fett ftfnd darauf. Er erwartete, daß es run schreien t,'erdk; aber es sprang ui'r mit einem kleinen unarükulienea Stöhnen empor und lief vnjweifelk auf , den Waschtisch zu. . Aber durch den Lustzug, den. seine schnellen Bewegungen verursachten, geriet der glimmende Stoff in helle Flammen. Das Kind änderte seinen Weg und stürzte zum Bett, imm?r das unzusammenhängend? Stammeln auf den Lippen. Ti. Spitzendecke des Bettes begann zu brennen, eine Flamme ergriff, im 'Jeu die Spitzengardine. und eine helle Lohe schlug zur Delle empor. Aber noch hatt es nicht geschnen, batte keinen 'Alarm geschlagen. Iah konnte noch ungesehen entfliehen. Wie der Blig schössen ihm die Ge danken duich den Kopf. Wenn et blieb, so hieß es das Gefängnis für ihn es hieß den Hungertod oder das Arbeitshaus füc Weid und Kind. Die Perle war ii: seiner Tasche. Was war dos Leben dieses kleinen Fremdlings für ihn g? zen das seiner Lieben! Aber er kennte trotzdem nicht flie hen. In der nächsten Sekunde war er im Zimmer, riß den großen, schmren Kaminteppich empor und wickelte das kleine, angstvoll stöhnende Kind darin ein, rollte es auf der Erde umher hastig, rauh. Tann, als er sah. daß die Flammen erstickt waren, nickte er. riß die brennenden, Gardinen mit dea blanken Händen herunter, knäulte und trat das brennend Material, das sich kaum bewältigen lassen woll tc. Seine Aermel begannen zu glim men. Er drückte die Glut hastig mi: den Händen aus. Dann ergiiff :r die schwere Wasserkanne, schüttete sie über das Bett und schlug mit dem Feuerhaken, den er ergriffen hatte, r.ach den Flammen, die sich noch zeigten. , Und er wurde des Feuer Herr; aber er sah wild aus mit seinem zeschw,ärzien Gesicht, aus dem t Auqen unheimlich leuchteten, mit sei-, nen schwarzen Händen, um die die zerfetzten, verbrannten Aermel her umhingen. Drei Minuten spater bewiesen nur der Gestank, der sich verziehende Qilalm und die Verwüstung, daß es hier gebrannt habe. Da ward er sich plötzlich bewußt. trampelnde Füße, eilige, überhastet: Tritte und eine aufgeregte Stimme zu bören. Was ist los. Miß Gladys? Ich komme!" Es war die Wärterin. Sie schrie zuerst über die Spuren de? Feuers dann abermals, als sie ihre kleine Herrin , wie eine Tote auf der Erde liegen sah; und zum Schluß lau tcr als vorher - vor Netzen, als sie den zitternden Joß gewahrte, de: sie anstarrte ntdeckt, gefangen. Denn sie. war nicht allein gekow. men. mn uaia ur ane itine ui tie Billard, beendet), die Köchin (sie hatte .ausgeschlafen) eine kleine Hilfsmagd (sie hatte ihren Schmöker im Stich gelassen) alle keuchend, alle von Grauen erfaßt kletterten die Treppe empor, sahen Joß und vergrößerten, die Verwirrung. .Ein Einbrecher!" schrie die Kö chin. , .Brandstifter!" rief der Lakai und faßte den Stock, den er mitgebacht hatte, fester. .Mörder!" kreischte die Wärterin. Denn Joß hatte noch den Feuerhaken in der Hand und stand neben r leblosen kleine Gestalt, die im.Tep pich eingehüllt war, sah also wirk lich cht mordverdächtig aus. Ein schwerer, schneller , Tritt kam die Treppe herauf. ' In ' der Tür stand Herr Vesey Ehalloner selbst. Er hatte einen Revolver in der Hznd. Eine Totenstille trat ein. ' .Legen Sie den Stock weg!" sagte Herr Ehalloner ' kurz. ' .Bewachen Sie ihn aber gut. James. - Er eilte aus sem Tochieichen zu, angstvoll in daö blasse Gesicht er barmungSwürdig angstvoll. Dann trug er e, zum Bett und stieß dabei die Mägde zur Seite. .Ann die Polizei!" befahl er der HilfSmagd. Sie duckte sich uns derschwand. .Nun genug de Un sinn, fassen Sie sich a, .fl,a.st!" fügte er hart gegen die hn, -nde 'Wärterin gewendet hinzu, i Sie Kognak, schnell! Beim Hin. mein Freund. d.!ö soll Euch mit scn heimgezahlt werden!" rief er I zu. Er wickelte das Kind auf und sa erst jetzt die Brandlöcher in seinen, Nachtkleid. Sein Gesicht wurde to. lendlaß, sein Mund schloß sich fest, und er schien nach Selbstbeherrschuti;!. zu ringen. .Beim lebendigen Gott, du Schur ke. ich könnte dich kalten Blutes mor ten!" stöhnte er. Er wandle dem befangenen den Niickcn und beug: sich über das Kind. lind Joß konnte nicht sprechet', nick-t für sein Lelen. Er sah. wie dem ,Kinde Kognak eingeflößt wurde, borte die Hilfsmagd erregt sagen: .Tiefen Weg. Herr' Konstadier!". und sah bn Polizisten in der Tür erfchei nen. .Die Perle!" rief die Wätlerin. die Herrn Ehalloner bekiilflich war, plotz lich. .Die Perle! Sie ist fort!" Herr Ehalloner richtete sich kerzen gerade auf. .Lassen Sie die Perle sein, wo si: will sie kommt zu sich!" sagte er. Dann trat er an Joß heran und ver senkte ufverhofft seine Hand in des sen zerriis'iie Tasche. Joß' Hand fuhr ebenso schnell hin ein. Doch Herr Ehalloner hielt sie fest und preßte die fest zusammenge ballten Finger auseinander, bis die Perle offen auf der furchtbar ver brannten schwarzen lag. .Konstabier, sehe c.e das hier? Ich gebe diesen Mann" - .Eh. mein Liebste?!" Die Stimm der Wärterin unti brach ihn. Das Kind hatte die Au gen aufgeschlagen, bemühte sich, sich aufzurichten, blickte mit furchtsamen Augen um sich und begann zu wei nen. als es den Polizisten sah. Sein Bater eilte zu ihm und legte zärt lich den Arm um seine Schultern. Endlich würde das Kind erzählen! Sicherlich würde es jetzt sprechen, dachte Joß. Es kannte ja die Wahr heit. Er sah das kleine Mädchen sie hend an. und sie sah ihn on, ihre Lippen bebten, und sie lächelte ihm zu. .Nehmen Sie ihn mit fort!" sagte Herr Ehalloner 'zu dem Polizisten. .Daö weitere wird sich finden!" Und noch immer lächelte das Kind! Noch sagte es kein Wert, und es war doch mit seinen acht oder neun Iah ren alt genug, zu verstehen. Noch immer konnte Joß kein Wort zu sei- ner Verteidigung finden. Der Polizist legte dem unglückli chen Mann Handschellen an und schüttelte ihn rauh an der Schulter., Ein Ausdruck von Bestürzung tra: in des Kindes Augen. Jenes seitsame Stöhnen kam über seine Lippen, Es warf das Köpfchen zurück gegen die Arme feines Vaters, und 'seine Lippen bewegten sich. Nehmen Sie ihn fort!" wieder holte Herr Ehalloner ungeduldig. 'es Rindes Besicht rötete sich. Es schluchzte würgte und rief dann mit einer Stimme, so seltsam, so unheimlich, daß Joß erschauerte, trotz seiner Freude. Klara war nicht da das Feuer ging aus ich wollte eS wieder an fachen es ertaßte mein Nachtkleid Gardinen. Bett, alles. Er hat mich gerettet, Vater! Er hat das Feuer ausgemacht. Ich brannte ganz und gar da Hot er das Feuer aus gemacht! Q Vater, ich ich ich sptechel' -. Joß verstand nichts von dem, was jetzt geschah. Das Weggehen des Po lizisten mit zwei blanken Goldstücken in seiner Tasche war ihm ein Rät sel. Herrn EhallonerS Tränen wa ren ihm ein weiteteö. Die Erregung üller, die Bestürzung, die Dankbar Zeit, das Glück, das alles war ihm unerklärlich. Warum sollten sie alle plötzlich so froh sein, daß das kleine Mädchen ihn vor dem Gefängnis bewahrt hatte? Joß saß in Herrn Ehalloner ?' beitszimmer und stotterte, von echter' Scham erfüllt, einen Bericht dessen, was er on diesem Abend getan und warum er es getan. . .Di soll nun ' für Sie vorbei sein!" sagte Herr Ehalloner, als er geendet, und legte die Hand auf Joß' Schulter. .Ich, werde mich Ihrer und Ihrer Familie in Zukunft an nehmen. Sie haben nämlich mehr getan, als nur meines kleinen Lieb lings Leben gerettet!" .Mehr?" wiederholte ' Joß ver blüfft. ; ' j .Ja.- mehr. Da das Wasser in '"einer physikalischen Beschafsenhe't ,von der Luft stark abhängig ist, sz liiheint es wohl möglich, daß auch die assettiere Wetterpropheten fein kön nen. Die Lufttemperatur teilt sich Wasser ziemlich schnell mit. dc ti.it hängt aber bis zu eiuein siivissen rade die Ticbtigleit des Wassers ,,l,sammen. und es ist wt'M auße; Zweifel, daß die Fiscke beides empsiü' ocn können. Tie Witterung vermag also eise sEinfluß auf die Fiscke auszullb!. Dem Angler ist es z. V. bekannt, tcH vor einem . Gewitter Hechte, Aale, Bursche und Brassen gerne ttlhn. Da vor einem G:!ri!tcr stets dis Barometer fällt, jo ist das Benehü'ci: !der Fische sicher damit in Zusammen hang zu bringen. ' Reiches Material zur Beobachtung geben im Sommer die Schol!en in den flachen Wattenstromen an der Nordseeküste. Erfahrene Fischer zi tn aus dem Benehmen der Fische ei' ncn Schluß auf die Witterung, der 'selten trügt. Wie bekannt, iainmeln sich zur Ebbezeit alle Fische in den' suchten Prielen der Watten, wo sie mehr oder weniger ties tm Sande lie gen und von den Wattenfischern ae sangen werden. Aber Lage und Be nehmen der Tiere sind nicht imt7?r gleich, und man findet bald herauf daß dies mit dem Wetter im Zusam menhing steht. Bei gutem und be ständigem Wetter liegen die Fische ruhig, tief im Snde. der Fischer hat dann bequemes Fangen und bringt reiche Ausbeute mit heim. Stellt im Herbst bei ruhigein Wetter sich Kälte ein. so liegen die Fische so tief im Sande, daß sie nur mit einer Harpune hcrausgehvlt werden können, und im Winter ziehen sie alle rn das tiefe Meer. Aber nicht immer liegen die Fische so ruhig, selbst wenn das Wetter schön ist. Unwetter mit Sturm kommen wiid. Ganz ähnlich benehmen sich die Fi sche vor einem Gewitter. Jedesmal ist alsdann das Barometer stark ge fallen. Sturm und Gewitter stelln ja mit einem barometrischen Mini mum in Verbindung, und es ist nicht zweifelhaft, daß die Fische den ver änderten Lustdruck empfinden könne:'., und das fchon zu einer Zeit, wo wir mit unsern Sinnesorganen noch keine Spur von einem Witterungswechsel merken können. An den Nordseekü f!cn tritt eine Aenderung des Wet ters gewöhnlich zur Zeit der Spring fluten ein, und um diese Zeit sind die Fische besonders unruhig. Auch das Eintreffen der täglichen Flutwel le empfinden sie vorher, bereits dain scholr, wenn die etwas vorauseilend: Flutwelle der, Atmosphäre eintrifft. Nun bleibt es immerhin zweifelhaft, ob sie den Eintritt der atmosphäri schen Flut empfinden oder ob sie die Zeit kennen, zu der ihnen tägl'ch der Tisch neu gedeckt wird. Vielleicht wirken beide Faktoren zusammen. Eigenartig ist das Benehmen der Fische vor dem Regen. , Eine Aen derung. ihres Benehmen ijt vorher nicht zu erkennen, aber mit Eintritt des Regens , sine sie alle sofort der schivunden. Wahrscheinlich ist es da Geräusch des niedervlätschcrndcn Regens, der sie verscheucht, ober es üt iinzewiß. ob sie sich in das tiefe Wa' 'er flüchten oder sich tief in den Send betten.
