Rhode Island Democrats.
An Associated prose dispatch, under
date of Providence, R. I., March 10,
says: The democratic state conven
tion assembled here today to name
eight delegates to tho national con
vention at St. Louis. This was not
only tho first state gathering o demo
crats to choose delegates to take part
in tho nomination of a presidential
candidate in tho 1904 campaign, but
was of intorest also because of a
etrugglo which had developed be
tween two wings of the party over
tho question of instructing the dele
t gates whom to support as presidential
' nominees.
Ono faction, headed oy George W.
Greono, member of the national com
mlttco, and John J. Fitgerald of
Pawtuckot, democratic leader in the
state house of representatives, de
manded that the delegates be in
structed to favor William R Hearst
of Now York. The regular state or
ganization, through Tatrkk. Henry
Quinn of Warwick, its chairman, op
posed an instructed delegation. Chair
man Quinn was supported by Colonel
Samuel R. Honey of Newport, leader
in tho Cleveland campa'gns
No sooner was tho convention or
ganized than a wrangle aro&e over

Mr. Quinn, seeing that his side was

R. B. Comstock nominated a ticket
headed by Mayor Augustus Miller of

ous. This statement was so vigorous
ly tyssed that the chairman was coni
pell&$ to interfere. A list of dele
gates, headed by Messrs. Fitzgerald
and Greene, also was placed in nomi
nation. The ballot for delegates resulted in
the election of five of the Fitzgerald
Greene delegates and three of tho
Qulnn-Honey party. The delegates

were elected by a vote of 127 to 93.
The other members of the delegation
were chosen by acclamation.
