THE DEATH OF THE FLOWERS.
Bx William Cullkn Bktant.)
The melancholy days are come, tlie saddest of the year,
Of wailing winds, and naked woods, and meadows brown and sero.
Heaped in the hollows of the grove, the autumn leaves lie dead;
They rustle in the eddying gust, and to the rabbit's tread;
The robin and the wren are flown, and from the shrubs the jay,
And from the wood-top calls the crow through all the gloomy day.
Where are the flowers, the fair young flowers, that lately sprang and stood
In brighter light and softer airs, a beauteous sisterhood?
Alas! they all arc in their graves, tho gentle race of flowers
Are lying in their lowly beds, with the fair and good of ours.
The rain is falling where they lie, but tho cold November rain
Calls not from out the gloomy earth the lovely ones again.
The wind-flowers and the violet, they perished long ago,
And the brier-rose and the orchis died amid the summer glow;
But on the hills the golden-rod, and the aster in the. wood,
And the yellow sun-flower by the brook in autumn beauty stood,
Till fell the frost from the clear cold heaven, as falls the plague on men,
And the brightness of their smile was gone, from upland, glade and glen.
And now, when comes the calm mild day, as still such days will come,
To call the squirrel and the bee from out their winter home;
When the sound of dropping nuts is heard, though all the trees are still,
And twinklo in the smoky light the waters of tho rill,
The south wind searches for the flowers whose fragrance late he bore,
And sighs to And them in the wood and by the stream no more.
And then I think of one who in her youthful beauty died,
The fair meek blossom that grew up and faded by my side.
In the cold moist earth we laid her, when the forests cast the leaf,
And we wept that one so lovely should have a life so brief;
Yet not unmeet it was that one, like that young friend of ours;
So gentle and so beautiful, should perish with the flowers.
The Weaker Sex.
Rev. John L. Brandt, pastor of the
First Christian church of St. Louis,
was recently called, unexpectedly, from
the city. Mr. Brandt sought a sub
stitute in the person of a neighbor
ing clergyman, but on the Sabbath
morning when the congregation as
sembled it was discovered that the
substitute had become suddenly ill
and was unable to fill the pulpit.
The large congregation was prepar
ing to leave the church, when the
good wife of Pastor Brandt went into
the pulpit and asked the members of
the congregation to resume their seats,
and announced that in her humble way
she would address them.
Mrs. Brandt opened the Bible, se
lected a text and delivered a simple
talk that for force, logic and eloquence
so many members of the congrega
tion say has never been excelled in
her husband's church.

Hallowe'en Invitations.
Invitations for Hallowe'en parties
can be made by sketching in one cor
ner a lighted candle, the figure of a
ghost, a bit of fruit or a basket of
nuts. If the artist is especially clever
the etching of two figures over a vi
sionary fire is good, with different
lines, such as "Come take a chance,"
'"Tis midnight; and I'll tell you true,"
"Once a year," "All's well that ends
well," "A Jack for a Jill," "I am look
ing, love, for you." If you wish to
mystify your guests the invitation can
be written backward.
Hallowe'en comes but once a year,
Over at my house you will find good
cheer;
I shall certainly expect you at quar
ter to eight,
Later than that ghosts will have fast
ened the gate.
Backward.

Sound Advice.
A housekeeper who finds herself tir
ing at every exertion is in danger of
nervous collapse. She who fails to
sleep soundly is especially liable to
such a breakdown. To avoid such pos
sibility, rest is absolutely necessary,
but not a rest that means idleness;
such rest would be the worst possible
thing. What is necessary, though, is
to break up accustomed routine of
work, and to do all things moderately;
take your breakfast in bed, rise late,
retire early, abandon all unnecessary
exertions, drink two or three quarts
of rich cocoa a day, ... or use

or in simple puddings. Eat nourish- I
ing food, the heavy meal preferably in
the middle of the day. Keep out of
doors as much as possible, but do not
allow yourself to become exhausted
with too much walking. Occasionally
during the day take ten minutes' rest
on the flat of your back if possible,
and if you manage to get the prover
bial "forty winks," so much the bet
ter. Go to bed early, and go to bed
each night at the same time. Darken
your room absolutely, and at once. Do
not try to read, knowing you cannot
sleep, or you will not. Close your
eyes, and, selecting a comfortable posi
tion, with all the muscles and nerves
relaxed, direct your glance upward.
In doing this, avoid the slightest ef
fort; it may take several night's trial
to quit making the effort, but when
you succeed and you will in a very
short time you will sleep restfully
and . well; and the more sleep one
manages to get while in a nervous, col
lapsible condition, tho less will be the
danger of prostration. Sunny South.
