Mrs. Emma Davis, 104-year old
ex-slave, fought a destructive fire
alone at her son’s home at 2048
U Street Tuesday.
Three rooms of the house
owned by Gurt Davis, were
gutted. Nobody was home except
Mrs. Davis and her grandson,
David 5. A little neighbor girl
was just coming up from an er
rand to the basement at the time
of the fire. After pushing the chil
dren to safety Mrs. Davis tempted
to put out a blaze near the back
door with a pan of water. Unable
to subdue the flame she went to
the dining room telephone, but
could not reach the fire depart
ment. Unable to go further she
fell to the floor and had given up
hope when the door opened and
someone entered to pull her out
ride.
Mrs. Davis is staying with an
ther son, James Fuller, 2244 S
Itreet. Cause of the fire is un
nown.
