Mr. Luther Allen combined his
business and pleasure trip last
week when he left to spend some
time with his brother in Kansas
City, Mo., before attending the
Elks convention to be held in
Oklahoma City. Before return
ing home, Mr. Allen will visit
several states visiting other rela
tives and friends.

over for several days before go
ing to the mountains. Mrs. Mar
shall, a former Lincolnite, has
lived in New York City for the

den, were William’s parents, the
Rev. William Broaden, sr., pastor
of Troy and Mrs. Broaden, their
son, Benjamin E., student at Lin
coln university, and their two
daughters, Darlene and Mary
Bell. Accompanying the Broad
ens, w-ho had been in attendance
at the district conference held at
Allen Chapel in South Omaha
was Wilberta Brady, a represent
ative of Elwood. Miss Brady is
the daughter of W. H. Brady,
principal of Elwood grade school.

Alpha Chi Gets 1st Negro
Dennis Brown, senior sociology
student at American Interna
tional College, Springfield, Mass.,
was initiated last week into Al
pha Chi, national honor society.
Mr. Brown, the first Negro to be
initiated into the group is the
husband of the former Leona
Lilly.
Mrs. Walterette Young is visit
ing her daughter and son-in-law,
Mr. and Mrs. R. L. Brown of De
troit, Mich. The little grand- j
daughter, Janis Sherril, who is |
the center of attraction, will also j
be a charming hostess for her
grandmother.

Former Lincoln Resident
Passes In Los Angeles
Funeral service was held in
Los Angeles, Calif., Thursday,
June 16 for Mrs. Flossie Patrick
Shaw, who lived in Lincoln until
1926. Among survivors are two
brothers, William Patrick of
Grand Island, Neb., who at
tended the funeral and Arthur
Patrick of Lincoln.

Seminary In Jamaica
Needs Financial Aid
In order to build an educational

, chased by the Baptist Missionary
i society, Calabar school in Jamaica
| is appealing for financial aid.
Money or anything that may be

to make a scheduled fair for July
15 in Jamaica a tremendous suc
cess, according to information re
ceived by Mrs. Minna Love Har
riott who is in the city with her
husband, Oscar, a student at the
University of Nebraska. The Har
riotts, _who recently came to this
country, have a son who will re
ceive his B.A. in piano from Cala
bar this summer. Additional in
formation may be obtained from
Mrs. Harriott who is making her
home at the Tabitha Home, 4720
Randolph, Lincoln, Neb. This is
the only school for training mis
sionaries in the Islands.
Negro Achieves Highest
Grades of All American
Students at Zurich Uni.
NEW YORK. (ANP). — Roy
Eaton, a City College senior
studying at the University of
Zurich on a scholarship, achieved
the highest grades of all Ameri
can students there, it was an
nounced last week.
Eaton. 18, who formerly lived
here at 373 Edgecombe avenue,
was awarded City College’s an
nual Aaron Naumberg scholar
ship last year. The award pro
vided $2,000 for a full year’s
study at the University of Zurich.
It was granted to Eaton on the
basis of character and excellence
in scholastic work.
Louis to Be Honored at
Scene of First Pro Fight
CHICAGO. (ANP) — Retired
heavyweight champion Joe Louis
will be honored June 17 at the
site of the old Bacon’s Casino,
the place where he fought his
first bout as a professional.
Bacon’s is now the home of the
DuSable Community center. The
reception will be given for the
benefit of this center.

There’s only a few days before
you will be hearing a lot of
strange noises—bang! crash! ziz
zle! pop! bang! No, it won’t be a
wreck between the Rocket and the
Southern Limited, it will only be
the 4th of July. So you’d better
get ready.

Frank Burden, a well known
Lincolnite, has returned to Lin
coln on a short visit. He will be
here until the middle of July. We
are glad to see you back, Frank.

Phyllis Holcomb spent several
days in Omaha this past week. I
know she had a real-gone time.

It won’t be long until Susie May
White Hall will be leaving out
fair city. She is moving to Omaha
with her family.
Freddie and Robbie Powell had

as their guests recently Mr. and
Mrs. Robert Crouch and Mr.
Charles Self. They were from St
Joseph, Mo. Mrs. Crouch and
Charles were former schoolmates
of Freddie and Robbie Powell in
St. Joseph; Mr. Crouch is the
brother to Maruice Crouch.

ices at Quinn Chapel I saw some
of you girls’ eyes wandering to a
new face. Well, in case you are in
terested, he was Artie McNear
from Des Moines, Iowa. Now I
hope you didn’t set your hopes too
high, for he was visiting Miss
Charlene Colbert.

Speaking of Sunday morning
services at Quinn Chapel, if you j
were not there you certainly
missed something great. Ralph
Wilson sang a solo, “The Lord’s
Prayer.’’ It was really great,

Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Johnson en
tertained a few friends of Freddie
and Robbie Powell and their
house guests from St. Joseph, Mo.,
Monday evening, June 20. Those
invited were Mr. and Mrs. Robert
Crouch, Betty Wilson, Robert
Taylor, Charlene Colbert, Artie
McNear, Emma Cameran, Maurice
Crouch, Dorothy Greene, Charles
Goolsby, Robbie Powell, Victor
Brown, Freddie Powell and
Charles Self. Refreshments were
served. After the gathering the
group attended the Klique Klub
Formal Lawn Party.

Ham and Egg Shortcake
Biscuit dough foi 12 biscuits
x One can cream of mushroom
soup
V6 cup milk
*4 cup diced cooked ham
Vi diced pimiento (optionali
3 hard-cooked eggs
Heat oven to 450° F (hot). Roll
biscuit dough; cut with 2-inch
cutter. Place on baking sheet;
bake about 15 minutes or until
done. Put soup in saucepan; stir
until smooth. Add milk slowly,
stirring constantly; heat. Quarter
the eggs; add ham, eggs, pimiento.
Simmer a few minutes.
Split biscuits and pour about
2/a of creamed ham and eggs over
bottom layer. Replace tops and
pour on remainder. Make six
servings. ■>
Double Strawberry Shortcake
(Serves 8)
1 pie crust (you^ regular recipe)
2 pints strawberry ice cream (brick
style)
t cup whipped cream
4 tbsp. granulated sugar, V4 tsp. vanila.
2 cups sliced, sweetened strawberries.
1. Prepare pie crust as usual
and roll out very thin.
2. Cut with pastry wheel into
16 squares or oblongs, about
inch larger than ice cream slices.
3. Prick thoroughly tines of fork
and bake in a hot oven (450° F)
about 10 minutes. Cool.
4. Best cream until it begins to
thicken. Add sugar gradually.
Continue beating so cream holds
shape. Add vanilla.
5. Cut ice cream into 1 inch
