Social Briefs Mrs. Virginia Brown, Mrs. Sara Polk and Mrs. Claudine Adkins were hostesses at a shower for Mrs. Loretha Shepard at the home of Mrs. Birdie Artis, Friday, April 1. # * * Mr. and Mrs. Fred Bradley and children, and Mrs. Ethel Kirtley were in Omaha Sunday, during which time they attended the communion service at Zion Bap tist church. * * * The U.C.W. kensington met Fri day afternoon with Mrs. Bassalia Bell, Mrs. Brevy Miller in charge. Plans were made for assisting Mrs. Odessa Johnson with the Easter pageant to be given Sun day morning at Quinn Chapel. * * * The Rev. W. L Lilly, presiding elder of the C.M.E. church was favorably impressed with the city during his several weeks stay. He spent some time fishing with friends. * * * The Mary Betune Literary and Art club met at the Urban League, Thursday, April 7, with its presi dent, Mrs. W. B. Davis in charge. Mrs. Edna Page, a new member was present. Mrs. Ella Stith, a newcomer from Fairbury, Neb., was accepted as a member. Plans were completed for the second annual Easter tea to be given, Sunday, April 1, at the home of Mrs. J. H. Dean, 1018 Rose street. Each member is inviting two couples. Mrs. Otis Washington and Mrs. Alfred Newton, mem bers from Beatrice, attended the meeting. The club will meet with Mrs. Washington in Beatrice in May and with Mrs. Newton in July. * * * Returning from California after spending a three-month vacation visiting relatives was Mrs. Eliza beth Crouch, who spent the week end as guest of her cousin, Luther Allen and Mrs. Allen. Mrs. Crouch enjoyed a family dinner at the Allen home on Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Cruder as guests. She left on Tuesday for her home in Chicago. * * * Mrs. Lula Williams, accompa nied by her granddaughter, Mrs. M. L. Shakespeare, spent Satur day in Omaha. They were break fast guests of Mrs. Williams’ granddaughter, Mrs. Eddie Bux ton, and Mrs. Lena Buxton. Mrs. Shakespeare was dinner guest of the Rev. and Mrs. John S. Favors. Miss Ida Rahn of Omaha was also a guest. * * * Mrs. Willie Page and her" daughter, Mrs. Anna Newton and her children, Bobbie Jean and Betty Jo spent the week end in Leavenworth, Kas., visiting Mrs. Josephine Gaines of Los Angeles, Calif. Mrs. Gaines is a former Lincoln resident. * * * Another visitor, coming from Madison, Wis., for a two week stay, is Mrs. Zelma Stevenson. Mrs. Stevenson in visiting her sister, Mrs. Wayne Hassel. Her mother, Mrs. Grace Le Veil, who will return to Wisconsin with her daughter and remain permanently. * * * Charles Goolsby Regional di rector, of the Alpha Phi Alpha, was in Omaha Saturday confer ring with community leaders re garding the fraternity program. * * * Mrs. Eddie Buxton of Omaha was in the city on Sunday. She was accompanied by her daugh ter Beverly Maxine. * * * More participants are needed for the Urban League fashion parade to oe held Monday, April 18. Contact Mrs. Erma Shepherd or register at the U. L. Final re hersal, Saturday, April 16, 2 p. m. in the U. L. Auditorium. * * * Thursday, April 14 is family night at the U. L. Exclusive at \ J&q/l Ctqji ghatt&L ) By Dorothy Green Greetings Gates: So the high school stoo-dunce are out for their Easter vacation as of last Friday April 8th, but the campus stoo-dunce aren’t quite so fortunate, their vacation doesn’t start until today * * * This week there is much news For instance, we are glad to see two of our boys back for a while. They are Bobby Graham and Walter Walker who have been in the navy for quite some time * * * Looking into the future I see two people becoming quite in terested in each other. What about that, Susie May? $ * * In my last T. A. C. Column I said I would have a question for this week, but when I asked you smart people what you planned for Easter, the reply was, “I don’t know” So what do i do next? * * * Willie Ricks was certainly in the limelight the past week. He was honored with a birthday party Saturday evening in the Urban League lounge given by Betty and Hazel Wilson, Betty Bowman, Pat Hubbard and Lo vetta McWilliams. There were a lot of teens invited, so I won’t try to give you the complete list. T' ere were two out of town guests, Barbara Jackson and Howard Martin, both of Kansas City. Barbara is Betty Bowman’s sister. * * * Seen together after the party were Betty Bowman, Ernest Tay lor, Betty Wilson, Howard Martin, Joyce Williams, Richard Holcomb, Barbara Jackson, George Riley, Hazel Wilson, Bill Darnell, Jeanne Malone, Albert Bowen, Loretta McWilliams and Cecil Hatcher. * * * Robbie and Freddie Powell are going to spend their Easter vaca tion in St. Joseph, Mo., with Charlene Colbert. Other teens want to go to Omaha I under stand. * * * Elbert Starks did a very good job on the Hardy’s Talent pro gram Monday evening where he received many, many beautiful gifts for being first place winner on the program. * * * Joyce Williams and Richard Holcomb are getting along very well. They have been seen to gether quite a lot lately. T T . _ t p * ff l ":f~ 7~ . \~rTjffrt sg^p Spice Refrigerator Cookies * W* cups sifted flour Ms teaspoon baking powder Vk teaspoon salt Vs teaspoon nutmeg % teaspoon cloves Me cup shortening Vs cup sugar 1 beaten egg Vi teaspoon vanilla Sift together flour, baking powder, salt, nutmeg and cloves. Cream shortening and sugar thoroly. Combine beaten egg and va- j nilla; add to creamed mixture and blend well. Form Into a roll ll/s inches in dia meter, wrap in waxed paper and chill thoroly. Cut in Vfc inch slices. Bake on a greased baking sheet in a moderate oven <350°) for 10 minutes until lightly browned. Makes 4 dozen cookies. Varia tion : Make chocolate cookies by adding 1 1-ounce square melted, unsweetened, chocolate. Vs teaspoon soda. 2 tablespoons sour milk. Omit nutmeg and rloves. Coconut Ice Box Cookies Va cup butter Va cup shortening 2 cups brown sugar 3 eggs, beaten lMe teaspoon vanilla Vs teaspoon salt tVs cups flour l Vs teaspoon soda SVa cups rollcu oats 2Me cups coconut Cream fats and sugar; add eggs, va nilla and sait. Sift flour and soda to gether and stir into first mixture. Thoroly ■nix in roiled oats and coconut. Form Into rolls 1 Vi inches In diameter and 8 to 10 inches long. Chill well. Slice in V* Inch pieces and bake well. Slice cookie sheet in moderate oven (375°) until brown, about 12 minutes. Use Me while sugar If a milder flavor is desired. Makes 14 dozen cookies. Vanilla Wafer Icebox Dessert Roll 20 vanilla wafers, line pan with wafers (should be about V4 inch thick). Cook in double boiler; 1 cup of milk. % cup of sugar, juice of 1 lemon and grated rind, yolks of 4 eggs well beaten. Beat well; when tool add well beaten whites with two table spoons sugar added to egg whites. Mix well and pour over the vanilla wafers. Whip % pint XX cream, sugar to taste. Cover mixture with XX cream and roll peppermint (hard candy) sprinkled on top. A cup of drained, crushed pineapple can be added to custard after cooling.
