* The Sports Front With Smoky Pro Football's Open Door WASHINGTON — Unimpeach x able sources, which this writer r*<an’t reveal at present, indicate that major league pro football is planning to open the door to colored football stars of excep tional ability from Negro colleges. Due to exactions in brawn, rug gedness and latent gifts, few of our boys rate candidacy for these jobs, which start at about $3,600 per season. However, future Ben Steven sons, Tank Conrads, Big Train Moodys, Tarzan Kendalls, Big Bertha Edwards or Red Briscoes may build bank balances, families and traditions from this lucrative field, which opened to Kenny Jk Washington, Woodrow Strode, ▼Marion Motley and Bill Willis in 1946, ending an exclusion which began with Joe Lillard’s banish ment from the Chicago Cardinals in 1933. The prospects are good for the induction of at least a dozen colored stars in the near future, and several prominent Negro coaches have already been consulted. Last Friday night the Urban Cagers lost a close but well played game to the American Legion Post No. 30 of Omaha. The Omaha cagers took the lead in the latter part of the first quarter and from there went on to win i by a score of 37-33. At no time during the game did the Omahans have a safe lead. In the City League Hompes’ Service defeated the Leaguers by a score of 39-29. Quinn Chapel defeated First Christian 21-8 in the Church Lea gue. With Old Man Winter fast mak ing his last lap, sport fans are slowly turning to the subject of that great American game, base ball. From the looks of things Lincoln baseball fans will prob ably get to see a little better brand of ball this season with the return, of the Western League. This should not only make for better entertainment but also for better business. It should also 4H better moral conditions for the younger fellows, because at a good baseball game only one thing can be learned, how to play the good old American sport and good sportsmanship. I Teen Age Chatter Reporter Dotty Greene Asst. Ruby Lee Harper Asst. Lorretta McWilliams The double birthday party given by Mattie Sue Nevels and Frances Lewis was a great suc cess. Some of the games that were quite popular were Truth and Consequences. In Truth or Consequences several things w'ere brought out of the hidden places like what boy in Lincoln interests Mattie Sue Nevels, of course you all know the answer to that. Bert Cooke seems to get around with a girl named Lorraine and the party wouldn’t have been a suc cess if Joyce Williams hadn’t played the role of Loren Bacall. In one of the games, Phylis Holcomb and Jimmy Valentine were winners, with Jeanne Ma lone, Frank Hale, Delores Bowen, and Welcome Bryant as runner ups. After refreshments of ice cream and cake were served, the girls opened their presents. (By the way if anyone wants to corre spond with Miss Nevels she is well equipped, she received 4 boxes of .stationery, also she re ceived 2 boxes of candy and a Snicker candy bar for each of her 18 birthdays.) Did you notice who escorted Freddie Powell home after the party? I did. It was Welcome Bryant. * * * * * * Person-of-the-week Sex—Male Age—17 Height—5’7” Weight—117 Color of eyes—brown Color of hair—black Address—... 1 5 U Street Lincoln High School Guess Who!
