C. Oltjenbruns, taking his big Buick
touring car loaded with enthusiastic
Epworth Leaguers last Thursday
headed for Ansley, the seat of the
district convention. Those attending
were Misses FrancisSweetland,Orpha
Outhouse, Florence Depew, Maybelle
and Zoe Leeper and Dr. Leeper. An
enjoyable and profitable time was
reported.
An elegant rain of nearly an inch
visited Loup City Monday, commenc
ing a short ways west of the city, at
noon and continued a gentle falling
the better part of the afternoon, and
Monday night giving a downpour in
addition that was a souser. The noon
rain on Monday washed about uhree
quarters of a mile of tracs out just
east ot Schaupps, compelling the east
bound freight on the B. &. M to re
turn to this city and delaying the
passenger till a late hour before the
track could be gotten into condition
for the train to pass over it.
During the storm of Monday noon,
lightning struck a large tree in front
of Albert Johnson's town cottage,
tearing it to pieces and throwing
large splinters and bark across the
street and into the lawn of J. P.
Leininger's residence. The thunder
was so loud and the lightning so
sharp that everywhere over the city
people looked around in the near
victiny to see where it struck. Those
within a block or more of the scene
received severe shocks and the tele
phone wires crackled like so much
burning bush.
As per announcement in North
western columns, last week, the post
office was moved into its new quar
ters west of the public square in the
building especially built for its ac
comodation by the Cement Block Co.,
owned and operated by Messrs.
Zimmerman and Stout. The moving
of tiie postoffice occured late on Sat
urday afternoon and placed in full
position that night under the full
glare of electric lights furnished
ahead of time by the electric light
company, as promised a few days
earlier. A slight hitch in getting the
wires stretched by the company,
caused by the strike of linemen the
latter part of the week was overcome
in time to put in temporary lights
direct from the power house. The
scene was very pretty and gave evi
dence of-what electric lighting will
do toward beautifying our city after
the shades of night come jipon us.

Ex-Senator Burkett says on his re
turned from Baltimore that the news
papers have been unabie to give an
adequate idea of the feeling of bitter
ness toward Mr. Bryan among the pie
hunting delegates. When one of the
demonstrations was on Mr. Burkett
made himself offensive to a demo
cratic delegate by showing a good
deal of enthusiasm for his fellow Ne
braskan.
“Aw, shut up." said the democrat
with disgust written all over his fea
tures. "We have been licked three
times under that man. and we want
somebody we can win with.’’
“I don't care." said Burkett, be
tween hurrahs. “I'm a republican, I
don't care whether you ever get up to

Hale, has been assisting Mr. Hale in
getting used to the business, leaves
this noon for his future home in
Elmore. Minn., where he will have
charge of the furniture and undertak
ing departments of a large depart
ment store. Mrs. Ferdinant and the
j children having preceded him to their
new home some two or more months
ago. Mr. Ferdinandt has been a live
wire among our business men. a good
friend of the newspapers, and goes
from among us with the best wishes
of all for his future success in all
ways. Should Ferd ever take a notion
to return to our city he will be given
a warm welcome and our business in
terests will be bettered thereby.

Because we have not had much
say the past week or two about the
Harvest Festival this fall, you must
not think it has passed into innocuous

mittee has raised nearly *1300 and

Festival. All is ready for matters to
go ahead and the Festival will be
held and the biggest thing ever put
forth in Loup City. The Festival
will occur the last of August. More
