How tim? flits. Bryan was down in Kentucky the other day attending memorial ser vices in honor of Goebel whom he lauded highly and incidentally oriti. cising Roosevelt. Bah! Win. C. Whitney, formerly one of Cleveland’s cabinet officers, died of appendicitis Iasi week at his borne in New York. Grim death is there fore no respecter of muti-million aires. War in the far ea9t is now a real ity. Japan took the initiative b\ disabling three Russian war vessels. Tuesday night off Port Arthur and clinched that triumph, Wednesday, by capturing a transport with 2,00*' Russian troops on board. It looks very much as though Bur kett might be the name of the new IJ. S. senator to succeed Dietrich. And we have heard of no Shermar count) Republican who would feel badly oyer such a fact. But when could be found so good a man to fill his place in the lower house of con gress? Reno, Nevada, has been suffering from a terrific tornado, and from east of the Missisippi comes reports of great scow storms with general train blockades, while the effete east is en joying immense floods. Here in Ne braska we have been enjoying balm), tropical weather the meanwhile. A good incentive for continuing to stand up for Nebraska. There is been a wholesale slaugh ter of not exactly inm cents in the Indian territory of late, but of U- S. mar seals and deputies, whose heads have been put on the chopping block by the dozens. Let the Roosevelt administration alone for a general clean-up. The Republican party can be trusted to cleanse the official household of all impurities. Dry Creek Clippings, Frank Wagner is preparing to fill his ice house. Frank Wagner spent last Sunday at Cbas. Haller’s. Billie Wagner entered school at No. 4 last Tuesday. S. VV. Salyards and family visited last Sunday at the Wagner home. There will he a basket social, Feb. 12, at the home of Geo W. Holmes Miss Kate Wagner, who has been suffering from rheumatism, has al most recovered. A number of Dry Creek young people attended the dance at John Beamond's, Wednesday evening. A basket social was held at Dist. No. 20, Thursday evening of last week, $22.75 being raised toward fix. ing up the school house. A good time reported. Mike Smith is putting the finish ing touches to his buildings on the half section which he purchased last fall, and expects to move thereon in the near future. Observer. Prof. Lorenzo J. Zwickey, the last of the five entertainers of the lyceum course, w ill be at Pilger’s opera house Saturday evening, Feb ruary 13. He is a chalk talk lec turer of national reputation and his entertainment w ill, undoubtedly, be • rare treat to those who attend. JRdiitional UoGals. Our Highlander friends will cele brate the anniversary of the Father of our I'ountry, Friday evening of next week, by a grand ball in Soci ety had. Great preparations have been and are being made by the boys and lovers of the light fanta • tie will be assured of a splendid time. Don’t forget the date nor fail to attend, if you want a good time. j E G. Taylor, accompanied by A. N. Conklin and wife of Ashton and Mrs. E. Kendall of St. Paul, left for Omaha, Tuesday, where they will join an excursion party for a ten days’ trip to Kansas City, St. Louis, Memphis, Hot Springs, and spend three da* s at New Orleans, attend ing the Mardi Gras festivities. The excursionists will have a special train from Omaha, and be under the auspices of the grain dealers’ asso ciation. We predict for them a splendid time. The ladies held a Kensington so cial, conversazione, or guessing bee, or whatever the interesting event might be termed (us male bipeds are not supposed to understand) at t’>e pbasant home of Mrs. A. L. Zimmerman, in South Loup City, last Thursday afternon. A large number of ladies were in attendance and a most pleasant time was par ticipated in by all present. A dain ty luncheon was provided by the amiable hostess, much to the pleas ure of each lady present, which, to gether with literary and other treats, made the afternoon one of pleasant es' memories. May there be many recurrencies of such occasions. The preliminary hearing of Robt. watke, whose arrest on charge of attempted arson was mentioned in these columns last week, had his preliminary hearing, Monday, before County Judge Angier, resulting in Watke being bound over to the dis trict court in the sum of $500.00. Judge Aaron Wall and C"unty At torney I’edler have the prosecution of the case, while 11. M Mathew will have charge cf defendant’s in terests, which assures us that the case will be most ably handled on both sides. As to the merits or de merits of the case, the preliminary hearing gave practically no new features nor change from that given last week in the published account. --—. HIGH SCHOOL NOTES.
