The dance given by the National Guards ot this city at Pilger’s opera house last Friday night was largely attended. We are informed that they had a $45.75 house and a swell time. Fred Schniederiet called at this office last Friday after his paper,not having received one at the post of fice. Mistakes of this kind will oc cur but we expect to have a mailing machine before long and after that they cannot happen. Frank Foster and wifp of Knder lan, N. I)., arrived in this city last Thursday to visit his brother, F. F and family. Their brother, Ira and their father and mother drove dowr from Arcadia Saturday and visited with them here Saturday and Sun day. .Mrs. Z. M. Hunter is quite ill at her home. E. 8. Hayhurst went t<> Omaha on a business trip last Monday. Mrs. Judge Wall is recovering from a quite serious illness with la grippe. Chas. Brown and wife of Far well were ovc r Sunday guests at the home of E. (I. Taylor. County Superintendent Hendrick son and his good father and mother are la grippe sufferers. Grandma Benschoter has been se riously ill the past few days, and watchers are required nightly. Lawyer Starr has been a sufferer from la grippe for a week past but is now getting the better of it. Frank Foster, a crack tonsorial artist and hair lifter of Grand Is land, was vis ting old friends here over last Sunday. Mrs. Albert Johnson visited rela tives in Arcadia over last Sunday, and Albert was not known to smile during that dolorous period. Come in and Ree how nicely this office has been re arranged. And don’t forget to mention how hand some we look—the office, we mean. Rev. Kennedy lost a fountain pen las' week Thursday, highly prized on account of its associations. The finder will confer a favor by its re turn to the owner. Perry Reed has been drawn as juryman for the special session of the federal court to convene in Omaha Feb. 15, at which session ■omes up the Colby and postoffice •ases. Perry will invade Omaha Saturday evening. Mrs. W. It Waite and children, who have been visiting her parents, Mr. and Mis. D. C. Grow in this city the past week, return* d to their lome in Valley county last Tliurs iay in company with Mr Waite who came down after them. Rowan Sutton and family drove down from Valley county last Fri day morning o visit relatives iu our hurg. Frakes, nearly p oved the truth of the old story of a man lifting himse'f by the boot straps, by his efficient help in re ar ranging this office last Saturday. D. Burns of the firm of Ilaines, Burns & Co., Auctioneers of Omaha, was a pleasant caller at this office last Friday, lie was looking for a location for a large millinery and dress making establishment hut was unable to rent a suitable building and so had to leave what he consid ered a fine location. What’s the matter with having a fine, large brick block on the lots just north oi this office. The L. M L. A. gave a forewell supper last Friday night in honoi of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Reidell, who are soon to remove to Washington, Supper was served early, so as not to interfere with the military hall At the close, Robt. lb Starr, ii: words beautiful and touching, pre sented them with a sm all token oi remembrance from the members o' the lodge, after which those who de sired had ample time to trip tin light fantastic at the dance. August Jaesehka is putting some line improvements on the eighty acres of laud just east of town that lie bought about a month ago. He has built a barn, put down a well and is now building a house. On account of the revival services at the M E, church the Woman’s club will not h dd a special session, and the Colonial entertainment scheduled for Feb 20th will be postponed until further notice. Mr Mason gave some very interesting reminiscences of Ins recent trip to his old home in Indiana. The county’s marriage record shows that John Otlewski and Miss Rosa Deitz, both of Logan town ship, have a license to wed which was issued to them Wednesday. We do not know when the happy event is going to take place hut we extend to them our best wishes on the strength of what we find on the docket. There have been two noted chang es among the business firms of Loup I City within the past tew days. The first oecu red last week Thursday, C. C. Cooper purchasing the general merchandise stock of E. Enevold sen, on the south side of the square. Mr. Cooper has had charge of the store from its inception to the pres ent and has worked up a good busi ness which irnpells him to the be lief that it is h good thing to own and get full benefit of. lie asks fur your custom through these columns Mr. Cooper is an energetic.and wide awake man and is certain to do well. The second change comes somewhat in the nature of a surprise. Tues day of this week, O. F. Petersen disposed of his stock of general merchandise to Messrs. Borland, Zimmerman & Co., to take effect March 15. Mr. Borland comes to us from Staplehurst, while Mr Zim merman is the present efficient clerk in that store. Mr. Petersen has been in business here since the fall of 1898 and turns over a handsome and increasing business to the new firm He has a big closing out sale in our columns this week. On tlie eighth page of this week’s paper will be found the big Public Sale announcement of Frank Lor ehiek to be held Feb lMth at his home on the old Fisher place six miles northeast of Loup City and three miles northwest ot Scbmpp’s Siding. The lire company was called out Monday afternoon for the first time this fall, but the tire, having been discovered in the very start, was put out by a bucket brigade. The tire started in the second story of the Porter block on the south side in a room occupied by Lester Stur devant and family and was caused, wc are informed, by setting an ash pan in uuder the stove, supposing, of course that there was no tire in them, but they set tiro to the floor and the hungry flames had just suc ceeded in eating their way through tiie flooring, when it was providen tially discoveied by a young lady, who went upstairs after something and seeing the smoke she ran back down stajrs and gave the alarm.
