Lovr cm, —- —1 i - j LET THE BEST MEN WIN | Now that the date of the forth coming Republican state convention ! has been fixed, candidates for the I ; various state otlices are beginning to crop out all over the broad area of our beloved state. Some comment j of both favorable ami unfavorable nature is made oecause nearly every state office has one or more clerks or deputies who are willing and anxious to succeed their chiefs in office. We can see nothing in this to excite un favorable reflection, and consider their ambitions truly laudable. All els* being equal, we see no reason why their patriotism should be check ered, as these offices being created in the interest of the people, the more thorough knowledge of the duties therein from the very outstart, the better service and with less friction. So much in favor of the elevation ol'; the faithful employes. But on the I other hand, in a great state of so i : raauy and diversified interests, and so many sections demanding recog- ; nition, it might be well to pause and r« fleet as to the wiseness of the fore going proposition as establishing a precedent that might act as a boom erang in the future. The suggestion arises as to whether, if the precedent of raising deputies to chiefs, was made, deputies and clerks would not j be appointed with an eve-single to their elevation and tbe scramble for those places be a sort of political I pot-pourri unpleasant to the Repub lican nostrils? We are not claim-1 ;ng to brew a nostrum thn shall cure! j any evil that, might co.nr. but sin - ! ply diagnosing the case for the lb publican medicine to be applied. A good many think there are as good 1 llslt in the sea as ever were caught, and this idea applies to the deputies who having been honored with a two or four years’ term should go back and sit down giving way for others who want a taste of the official fla vor. And there you have in nil the above the wide divergence of opinion on the at present most absorbing top ic for consideration. However, we may safely leave the entire matter in the hands of the coming state convention, which composed as it will be of representative men from all portions of the state will scarcely err in the selection of good timber, as their selection means the election of those who will be state officials for at least tw* years following. WANTED, A CANDIDATE The democratic leaders are raking their party with a fine tooth comb for suitable timber for the head of their ticket. Just now the Iroquois club have launched a feeler for Gen. Miles. It is likely to cause a shud i tier to run down the spinal column of the old wheel horses who remember the candidacy of little Gen. George B. McCledao and the results. Gen erals doo’t suit the unterrified. The j democrats are aldo talking up Mar | shall Field for president, but as the ■ great merchant is known to have supporttd McKinley both times, his candidacy could not have the sup port of Col. Bry an, which renders his nomination out of the question. Amt I thus it goes, .fudge Parker of New I York aud Arthur P. Gorman would > neither of them sup Brv’.n vto must need b appealed, I nee go I bye to the Who U ti? i I i what's the matter with Willie Hcai>t? H s if reported to have a couple of million dollars he is willing to put w ere it will do the most good, if he m ty carry the banner, and as lie is worth twenty or thirty millions and lia-i 8t veral gold and stiver mines to his credit, besides several yellow journals to back him up, he may con fidently be expected to rake in the ja' k-pot. The argument will simply prove irresistible. Besides, such re doubtable warriors as Gen. J. B. Weaver, Col. Bryan, Never say-die Charley Walsh and Calamity Weller have recently been to Chicago and •‘seen” a great light, which proves a veritable political X-ray showing Willie to be the man. Rah for Willie. 1! >1 hern have unique ways of do i0} >i siness in Southern California, jt Thursday, for instance, they ; ii <I\ took occasion during a tem po ry absence of the express mes ei e; in another ear to topple the -a f orn the car, letting the train go about its business, while they broke open and looted the safe at lhi1 r leisure. 1 it-claimed Smoot, the Mormon cot r< ssman under fire at WashiDg toi . is having a little the best of it, tin I t tat unless the opposition make a I tt< r showing in the future than thi have so far the committee will be * tried to give him a “clean bill of I e titb." Mil ister Thompson is home from Brazil for a few wet ks. I ; FIGURES FOR FUSIONISTS The opposition to Republicanism in Nebraska not having the slightest hopes of electing their slate ticket, it is claimed will turn their entire at tention in the direction of controlling the legislature and electing Tinted States senator to succeed Dietrich. They hope to profit by the mistake in the selection of Dietrich, and by juggling of figures prove the Re publican party responsible for all the appropriations of the legis lature. However, it will take more juggling of figures than they are capable of doing to nuke the Repub licans responsible for the deficiency of 1182,735.97 under the fusion ad ministration which the Republican legislature had to make good in or der to preserve the state’s credit. Neither ean they hold the Republi r:n s responsible for the 8118,200 ap propriation to rt build the burned penitentiary, or the 8(0,000 for wolf bounties, nor find lault with it for the 817,370.75 for the return home of the First Nebraska; for the #55, 000 for the Hastings asylum: the #89,.so0 for supreme court oommis sioners and assistants; the #10 000 for the lluffalo exposition, or #35, 000 for a permanent home for the state fair, etc. In fact fusion jug gling can only result in their own exposure and ultimate defeat.
