to Columbus, Neb. to visit with her

The Ladies Aid .Society of the M. E.
cluircli will hold an exchange at the
post office Saturday afternoon of this

Oldson liros. brick yard Wednesday,
lie will use them for the foundation to
his new farm residence soon to be built.

week and is not able to teach school.
Miss Hickman took Ids place in the
grammer roon and Lela Chase is
teaching in the intermedi ite depart
ment.
Mr. Anton Erizem purchased of G.
I). Jlowen a nice span of driving horses
for use on the .St. Elmo bus. He also
bought a new harness of L. J, Owen
and now has a fine turn out to make
the trains with.
E. G. Taylor moved Iris family and
household effects from Ashton to Loup
City last Saturday and now is per
manently located here. lie is now in a
better position to look after his ex
tensive elevator business.

worked up a good practice in the
veterinary and horse dentistery line.
Dr. Norton came here from Aurora
a few months ago and having built him
a nice residence In the east part of
town has permanently located. His
office will bo at bis new residence,

state fair the first of the week.
Mrs. D. A. Finley and C. E. Kittell
of Chicago, 111., and aunt and brother
of Representative E. II. Kittell of
Rockville are here visiting relatives.
Mr. C. E. was once a resident of Sher
man county hut sold his land here
some years ago and invested in Florida
property. He likes Florida lor a
winter home lmt prefers to live farther
north during the suminer months.
Kmery Knight ana Jake Winkleman
went to Ashton Saturday and assisted
as battery in the ball game for the
Ashton team. The record they made
was good. The game was played be
tween the Ashton and Scotia clubs
and resulted In a score of to 1(1 in
favor of Ashton. It is said that
Knight did some very good throwing
and fanned nearly every one that came
to the bat, and that Winkleman held
everything that came his way. lie had
only one pass ball during Wm whole
game.
Last Tuesday night was the fast
frost of the season and it was a heavy
one. When the people awoke Wed
nesday morning they found every
thing white and ice nearly a quar
ter of an inch thick in the ram barrel
and tubs at the well. In places there
was a slight crust of frozen earth.
There is, no doubt a great deal of dam
age done to late planted corn, hut the
major part of the crop is well out of
harm's way. The frost was no sur
prise to our people as we have had
several days of cold, damp and cloudy
weather with the wind from the north
west. As we write the weather is
clear and warmer and the indica
tions are that we will have several
days of pleasant weather.

The root is completed to the new
grist mill and Mr. 1'arsliall, tiic owner,
is getting it ready for the machinery
as fast as possible.
Mr. and Mrs. E. II. Kittell, and two
sons of Rockville township ylsited the
state fair at Lincoln last week. They
visited Omaha while away.

A young man from Valley county
by the name of Linebtum, while in
the city last Monday got ki< keil in the
face by a horse. He was quite badly

Mrs. David Kay and daughter Grace
of Logan township were pleasant
callers at this office last Saturday.
Miss Grace commenced a term of
school as teacher in district No. 51 lsst
week.
Thos. Inks has put down a new dom
ain! foundation to Ids business build
ing on the south side of main street,
and occupied by Johnson, Lorentz &
Co. lie will also put down a new
side walk in front.

John Ilelienke. of Rockville town
ship has just finished putting down a
hydraulic well on the farm. The well
is 325 feet deep and cost 211.50 He
reports a good flow of water. The
well was made in two days.
Samuel Daddow moved his family
and household effects from his Clay
township farm to Loup City last Tues
day and Wednesday. lie will occupy
the house which lie purchased of C. A.
Austin and which has recently been
vacated-by W. II. Hickman.
The opera house was well filled last
Wednesday evening when the Slierrys
produced their play. The play was
not as good as expected but never
the-less considerable tun was furnish
ed. The instrumental music was line
and the singing and dancing real cute.
11. P. Howard, of Strawberry Point,
Iowa is the new compositor in the
Times office. Mr. Howard made this
office a friendly call last Tuesday eve
ning. He is a good printer, a pleas
ant gentleman and a—well we won’t
mention his politics hut the Times
ought to he thanl.lul for having se
cured his sei vices.
Sherman county was pretty well
represented in an official way at the
state fair this year. W. It. Mellor was
one o*' the board of managers, C. ,1.
Tracy, chief of police; Jacob A liters,
police of fishery department, J. S.
I’edler and M. C. Muiick, judges of
races; (’arsten Truelsen, judgeof cattle;
S. E. Callaway, ticket collector, and
Arthur Inks, acting as night chief on
the police force.
School opened up last Monday with
a good attendance. The teachers are

HIGH SCHOOL NOTES.

In behalf of the members of the
Loop City High school, I wish to say
by way of introduction to the readers
of this column that having been asked
by the editor of this paper to give an
account of the happenings of the school
1 will endeavor to do my best and will
gladly receive any help offered.
School commenced Monday after a
long vacation and we are now ready for
a j’ear of hard work and study.
The primary room can boast of -51
members, a great number of which
are new beginners.
Miss Meroe Outhouse is now the
organist for the opening exercises in
which the whole school take an active
part.
There are but 15 members in the sen
ior class “alas” where are the rest of
the ’‘Merry twenty-four.”
The assembly room was well crowd
Monday morning and some of the little
folks were obliged to stand up during
the opening exercises Itecause ot the
scarcity of seats.

rick, Ethel Gilford, Josie and Bertha
John, of Cleora are members of the
grammer and high school grades.
The song books used in the opening
exercises are few but new ones will be
ordered as soon as suitable ones can be
found.
