Kmery Knight ana Jake Winkleman went to Ashton Saturday and assisted as battery in the ball game for the Ashton team. The record they made was good. The game was played be tween the Ashton and Scotia clubs and resulted In a score of to 1(1 in favor of Ashton. It is said that Knight did some very good throwing and fanned nearly every one that came to the bat, and that Winkleman held everything that came his way. lie had only one pass ball during Wm whole game. Last Tuesday night was the fast frost of the season and it was a heavy one. When the people awoke Wed nesday morning they found every thing white and ice nearly a quar ter of an inch thick in the ram barrel and tubs at the well. In places there was a slight crust of frozen earth. There is, no doubt a great deal of dam age done to late planted corn, hut the major part of the crop is well out of harm's way. The frost was no sur prise to our people as we have had several days of cold, damp and cloudy weather with the wind from the north west. Austin and which has recently been vacated-by W. II. Hickman. The opera house was well filled last Wednesday evening when the Slierrys produced their play. The play was not as good as expected but never the-less considerable tun was furnish ed. The instrumental music was line and the singing and dancing real cute. 11. P. Howard, of Strawberry Point, Iowa is the new compositor in the Times office. Mr. Howard made this office a friendly call last Tuesday eve ning. In behalf of the members of the Loop City High school, I wish to say by way of introduction to the readers of this column that having been asked by the editor of this paper to give an account of the happenings of the school 1 will endeavor to do my best and will gladly receive any help offered. School commenced Monday after a long vacation and we are now ready for a j’ear of hard work and study. The primary room can boast of -51 members, a great number of which are new beginners. Miss Meroe Outhouse is now the organist for the opening exercises in which the whole school take an active part. There are but 15 members in the sen ior class “alas” where are the rest of the ’‘Merry twenty-four.” The assembly room was well crowd Monday morning and some of the little folks were obliged to stand up during the opening exercises Itecause ot the scarcity of seats. Misses Mable Cowling, Hose Kilpat rick, Ethel Gilford, Josie and Bertha John, of Cleora are members of the grammer and high school grades.
