AIJ(i. 18, 'nl ^ I>kau Parents and Sister— Vour most webiome letter at hand and was glad to hear from you. ; Vour letter had been here several days before 1 leeeived ii as l just' returned from Manilla, from the j cause you read in my other letter which you have probably long since received. It is raining to-day, only for that 1 would be on old guard fatigue (chaining prisoners.) The natives are just getting back in tins town since the time, the -bird chase i them out, about 15 or It! months ago, so you ma\ know that the town looks pretty wild and wooly. But they are working stead ily at their old dilapidated shacks, and at the bru^ii and grass, so that one can pass along some of the side streets. This place is much more convenient than our old one, as we have a dock here that a pretty good sized boat can pull up to. Our company is pretty badly split up now. We hold three towns and are hiking all the time. At one of the other towns, up the river, one roan out of our company ran in to a trap and wounded himself which resulted fatally a few days ago. We fixed up the beat collin possible of ; rough boards, on the outside wecov 'ered it with real blue cloth and. on the inside we lined it with white. All have betu hurried the same. While going to the town at which this happened we are tired on nearly every time. The trip is made in a small boat wbn h is kept here for all such purposes, but the best they have done yet was to knock a water barrel out from under one tnau with a canon ball. They hit the boat twice with rifle balls. They have fired on it at least 20 times. We also have two gun boats here. They run up and shell the hills every once in a while. The niggers “no sabes shooting at both ends”. Well I really don’t see any thing that would interest anybody, so 1 don’t know what to write. The mosquitoes here are some thing fierce. They chew on a man ali day and all night too,if wedid’nt have rmisquito bar. Our squad room looks now like it had seen a cyclone. We have got a i. pair ot monkeys in the company and no body has been in our room for a while. They have got all the cart ridges pulled out of my belt, clothes all over the llo >r; some ones sea shells also are laying all over the floor, one man’s netting is torn down and things are mixed up in general. Captain Lacy of company A swears he wil! shoot them. Oh! They a>e peaches, these monkeys The horses here are like the people, •very small, no larger than Shetland ponies, but they can pack half their weight over the mouotnincrcs or muddy trails ns the case may be l will close with love and best wishes to all. private Arehur Inks. As these little tots of 5 years advanced and took their seats near the flower stand, dressed in white and with pretty smiling frees, they caused a murmer of pleasing comments throughout the audience, and when they came forward the first tune with Uowers t their appearance was noted with in- i Brest as their smiles increased. I wish t<> preach, riot the doctrine of ignoble ease, but the doctrine of the stronous lif* ; the life of toil and effect, of labor and strife; to preach that highest form of success which conu s, not to the man who deseres mere easy peace, but to the man who lines not shirk from hardship, or from bitter toil, and who. out ot tncse, wins the splendid, ultimate triumph.—Speech at the Hamilton Club, Chicago, April 1 Hl>9. The .successful man, whether in business or politics, who has risen by a conscienceless swindling of bis neighbors, by deceit and chicanery, by unscrupulous boldness and un scruplous cunning, stands towards society as a dangerous wild beast. The mean and cringing admiration which such a carter commands among tlm.se who think crockedly or not at all makes this kind of success perhaps the most dangerous of all the ii'il'iances tout threaten our national life.
