A heavy rain drifted in from the north and caught many of the people before they got started and others were on their way before the rain began to fall. As a result not half of those who intended to celebrate in Harrison were able to do so. The rain began to fall quite early and kept it up-ontinuously until evening. The court room as well filled soon after dinner by those who wished to lis ten to tlie exercises. B. F. Thomas pie sided, some excellent music was ren dered by the glee club, prayer was offered by Itev. J. W. Kendall, the Iteclaration of Indeiendenre was read by Mrs. F. W. Knott, a recitation was given by Miss Claudia Hester and an ad dress was made by Itev. J. W. Kendall. Notwithstanding the rain the most of the races arranged for in the program came off and the people got considerable sport out of them. The game of base ball could not lie played on account of the ruin, but it will lie played here on Saturday, July llt.Ii. The feature of the evening was the ball at the court house. The committee had lit ted the room up nicely and had it handsomely lighted which added to the pleasure of the occasion. The attend ance was much larger than was expected and to say the participants enjoyed themselves is putting it ver' mild. The dancing was kept up until daylight. RAID ON THE HIDE. The rain was welcome. A good delegation was up from Run ning Water. Under the circumstances Harrison w as a more aereeblo place in which to celebrate tlian a grove. Montrose furnished tho largest delega tion of pretty girls. The appearance of tlie people did not indicate that poverty prevails in Sioux county. W. it. Wright and John I. Ilavis are a good mir to manage the floor. If news is short in Tint Jotknai. this week kindly withhold criticism, for the 4th of July comes butonce a year in this locality. There was not an occasion for an of ficer to use his authority during the day or night. Tlie hospitality of the people of Harri son was shown to visitors nnd it would be an injustice not to say that it was appreciated. Harrison invites all to begin now to get ready to come here to celebrate July 4th, HV. Rev. Kendall can exhaust his subject witliout exhausting his audience. A good time to close exercises is when tlie program has been carried out. It is hitting below tho llt to call on individuals to address an intelligent au dience without time to prepare. It is fair neither to the individual nor to the people. It was remarked tliat from his actions last night it is safe to believe that Coun ty Clerk Blewett likes to dance. Octave Harris is quite supple as o duncer for one so advanced in years. The school bell did not ring as early yesterday morning as was intended. The condition of the weather made the exercises by the iniluren out oi uie question. Tlie rain did not dampen tlie (pints- of the people. A few flags and evergreen boughs do much to improve tlie npearanee of the ball room. PERSONAL. Mrs. J. II. Cook is in town toikty. Mrs. H. C. 1). Basset t was in Harrison fatarday. Judging from the views expressed by many of our old-time democratic leaders, the 10 to 1 free coinage conference was by no means an index of the sentiment on this question among the rank and file.
