The gi'ciit tiiiiwH of th jH-Hnimtry ro more or h'mt umduciitd mid Illiterate, Hnd owliijf to this luck of edueatloii, they nre Kuiterntitious to a rldlouloiiH degree, Consequently, the prUmtH, working uHin this mionttlllon with their threnti of eternal damnation and attendant hell lire, exirlenee little or no difficulty In maintaining an Iron handed control over them. In theeattes In question, It wan proved beyond a doubt that the prlonta hail taken their cue from their bishop, and as a consequence of such Instructions, the wholo organization of the church was thrown Into the contest, every priest was a canvasser, and the j idgo before whom the cases were tried stated that the evidence clearly showed that even the confessional had liecn used as a means for ensuring the elec tion of the candidate favored by them. Amongst the evidence produced, the following fuctsweie brought to light Father Connolly, a parish priest, ad nil t ted staling from the altar stops that In his jrarlsh were 300 voters and ud v)h Ing these .'100 voters to take .'100 black' 1 horns with them to the election, and that he himself would take one. (How cm hie m alio of jwacc and good will to ro.m. This wmvi priest also refused tho ; nflt saiii. rit to one of his parishioners, a farm Minu'd Murtagh, for refusing to n'e in he, the priest ordered him, Mr. Mur iiigh having tho courage to In form this political canvassing priest that he would vote Juntas he thought fit, In spite of bishop, priest or pope. A few more men like Mr. Murtagh in Ireland, and the priest would not have everything their own way as they do at present, A recital here of the en tire coincidence would bo Impossible owing to the lack of space, but the above extracts are characteristic of the great er portion of It. One feature of the trial was tho trembling reluctance with which the panic-stricken witnesses gave their evidence. These cases are not by any means Isolated instances of firlostly Interference, they were merely typical, the machinery was the sauK elsewhere, tho methods and the objects were the same. What happened In these particular instances haponcl on a larger or smaller scale all over Unman Catholic Ireland. The priests can vassed the voters and by threats of ex communication and refusal of the sacra ment, compelled them to vote as they Instructed them, and marched them In droves to the polls. fThey Infested tho approaches to the voting booths and aw that the "Illiterates" did their duty by their church. For a great number of years, Atttori cans have heard of poor landlord-ridden Ireland, and its starving farmers being compelled to pay exhorbitant rents, and all this sort of thing, but do they ever hear of the heartless and debasing tyranny exercised by tho Itomlsh church through its coarse, black-coated and no less black-hearted priests over its poor Illiterate and suis-rstltlou peasantry? Of course not. The agitation that has been and Is wtlll troubling Ireland, Is not one of low or high rents, it Is simply Roman Catholicism versus Protestantism, and If the Romish priests were today re moved from Ireland, tomorrow you would see peace and contentment again reigning over there. With these facts before their eyes, Americans must not bo deceived with the Idea that this prb'Mtfy Interference in politics Is confined to Ireland, be cause such Is far from being the case. In this country, Roman Catholicism, through Its bishops and priests have always exercised a pernicious Influence In politics and consequently In al! elec tions. I'ioman Catholicism, instead of confining Itsel! to matters pertaining to religion, has developed Into one vast political machine with unlimited wealth at its back which is dully becoming more open and defiant and a constant and Increasing menace to those liber- i i 1 1. Others will ank, How can we stem this tide of usurpation by Roman Cath olicism? The answer Is, 1x4 every sect of Protestantism, irrespeetlve of differ ence of creed, lay aside all Internal dis sension and unite in one Issly to tight the common enemy. In unity lies our strength, divided we fall. United In one body, Protestantism, if it will only assert itself, can easily relegate to its projHtr plaoe,'tlils foe, which, under the name and thin disguise of religion, Is the greatest that America has yet had to contend with.
