If the "bee" in question Is In tended for the building of n house an improvised hut for the entertainment of the neighbors is ereetod. A few gallons of ale whisky Is preferable if expense it no objoct are indis pensable. On the eve of the "bee" the farmer who proposes building makes an in formal call upon his neighbors and aeks thorn to help him. On the ap pointed morning at early as 7. the sturdy farmer, frequently numbering seventy-five, in tholr quaint, rickety wagons, drive to the house and tie tholr horses to the fence. The air is alive all day with the clatter of ham mers and the merriment of the work ers. At noon dinner Is served on the green. Libations are passod at inter vals of about two hours. When it is time to adjust tho first peg, tho hostess, borne upon the arm of her husband, appears. All tho workmen throw down tlioir tools. The husband presents the hammer to his wife, and she drives tho llrst peg. The farmers continue tholr work with unrolontlng ardor until It is time for suppor. After that ropast it Is customary, if the building Is complotod, for its ownor to break a branch of pine and f(ijlonJt tp the center of thereof. Iloro fish have boon caught sixty miles above the estuary before one has boon taken in tidal water. Home of the formor re main in the lower pool and are joined by others as the run prog resses. Why Is thli? Have the fish any remembrance of where thoy spont their youthful days, and remain there while others pass thorn P It is now received at an undoubted fact that ovory fish knows its own river, b' 1 1 go further than that, and think every fish has a particular place in tho river whore It withes to re main, says the American Anglor. Tho turmoil of spawning time on the restricted spawn bods, the turn ing over of the newly laid ova. could Only end In wholosale destruction. The government recognises no order or society for tho purpose of decoration, but In the ono Instance, it may be said, it decorate the to) liurs and sailor by act of congress with the medal of honor for gallant and conspicuous conduct in batllo or in taking life, while, on the olhor hand, it confers the life ivlng medal for tho great risk run by one poison in saving tho life of another from drown ing. Hence, in the ono case, where one of the principal objocts is to cripple or destroy tho oneniy, even by taking his life if necessary, the soldier nnd sailor is awarded and decorated, while, in the other case, the cili.on who saves the life of a drowning person, it also rewarded; and, by the way. the latter porson or ilfo-saver, receive a gold or silver medal, ns the case may bo, while the soldier or sailor, the destroyer of life, receives a bron.e, or the less valuable one Intrinsically. In England the order of the Hath and (iartor are bestowed for civil merit, and are very limited In num ber. None but those high in position in tho country can recolvo thorn. Societies such as tho Humane society, colloges nnd olhor institutions confer highly prl.od titles on decorations, but tliov are not recogni.od by govern ments. It would, thoroforo, bo much out of place and very poor taste to wear them except on spoclal occasions. Governments soinotlmos confer tholr decorations on clti.ons of other coun tries for groat merit, daring or very ha ardous sorvieos. 'J'ho rccipiont, however, must first obtain the consont of his own government to receive It. ftpain has "The Order of the Gold en J'iooco, " the badge of which may Uo worn from the nock or button hole, oxcopt on occasion of great ceremony, when It is worn from the nock and tho woaror must be in unl form, consisting of u long robo of doop rod volvot, lined with white taffeta ovor which is thrown a long raantlo of purple velvet, linod with white satin and richly trimmed with erabroldory containing fire stones and steel emitting flames and sparks, Italy has the Order of the Iron t'ro.is in throo classes, who rocolve pens'ons of 8,000, 700 and 800 llres. The uniform is gorgeous, the first class wearing long robot with trains, the tecond to the feet, tho third to the knee, and all have largo pension. France has the Legion of Honor, and when conforred for military sorvlce carries a pension in each of Its four classes of .".U00, 'J.0 J0, 1.000 and 600 francs. Thus?
