EIGHT HOURS FOR WOMEN. California Legislature Enacts Short er Workday for Women. The legislature of California has just passed a stringent eight hour workday law for women and Gover nor Johnson has signed it. The pro visions of the new statute cover all occupations, save the exception that the law shall not affect the harvest ing, curing, canning or drying of anjr variety of perishable fruit or vege table. The penalty attached for vio lation cannot be less than $50 for each offense, and may reach $200, with a jail sentence of from five to thirty days, the latter discretionary with trial court. Another bill was approved which provides for the manufacture of sup plies by prison labor to be used ex clusively by the institution conducted by the state. Safeguards are pro vided that convict labor will not come into competition LABOR'S BEST WEAPON. Much of the success of the" union movement in this and future years will depend upon the use the labor men make of their purchasing power. To em ploy union labor by purchasing union label goods is the most effective weapon of organized la bor. It can change the com merce and manufactures of the land.
