« Ussn Routine-Orest l Her Franz Marberg saß in höchst nngemiithlichtr Stimmung in seinem Privattontor. Er hatte die große, ei serne Kasse geöffnet —- zum erstenmal seit seiner Rückkehr von der Sommer reise —- unDd sand zu seiner großen Ueberraschung das innere kleine Faih leer. Hier hatte er seit Jahren den großen Schmuck seiner Frau ver-I wahrt. Die Schlüssel zum Kontor so- j wie jene zur Kasse hatte er am Tage I seiner Ali-reife von Wien mitgenomsi men. Dann war er bis nach Dorn-i bach gefahren, wo er seine Van besaß. Er erinnerte sich noch gansz genau, die Sache war ja auch erst knapp vier zehn Tage her. Und überhaupt wiirde er jenen Abend in Dornbach wohl nicht so rasch vergessen. Damals hatte ihm sein Sohn Dagobert jene grosze Beichte abgelegt. Der leichtsiimiae Schlingel hatte wieder einmal Schul den. Sogar ziemlich hohe. Konnte natürlich nie mit der Oberlentnantss nagt und der bedeutenden Zulage auskommetn Herr Franz Marberg hatte aber ein Exempel statuiert Die Schulden mußten bezahlt werden« Das stand fest unid war Ehrensache Aber Oder junge Mensch mußte qnittie ren. Fort mit dem bunten Rock! Und heraus aus dieser ganzen Umge bung von Lebemännern nnd Spotte leutenl Hinüber mit idem leichtferti gen Patron nach Amerika. Und zwar mit einem Minimum von- Gestal Sollte er es nur versuchen, ans eigene Fausti Mochte er hungern nnd har ben und —- seinetivegen auch zugrun de gehen da sdriibenl Herr Marberg war schon am näch steIrMorgen abgereist nach einein stil len Alpen·dors. Er konnte die ver weinten Augen seiner Frau absolut nicht mehr sehenl Geld ließ er ihr knapp so viel als fie für das Leben brauchte. Sonst hätte sie dem Jun gen natürlich wieder was zugesteatl Sie hatte ihm ja damals an jenem schrecklichen Abend allerlei schwier Worte ins Gesicht geschleudert Daß er vielfach selbst schuld sei, wenn der junge Mensch so geworden, wie er eben war, daß er sich wenig genug um die Erzishnng seines Sohnes ge kiimmert habe, daß für ihn immer nur eins gegolten habe im Leben: der Erwerb, der Gnldverdienst, daß ihm Frau und Kind frenrd geworden waren. Jn lder Ruhe der grossen Natur war dem Mann, der fein Leben lang starr an den Worten: Arbeit und Pflichterfüllung festgehalten halte, manche Klarheit geworden Er hanc Abtechnung gehalten auch init sich selbst. Er sah sich wieder als armen Buben, als vielgeplagten und ge schmähten Lehrling, ewig beruhigt-sto ßen, unterdrückt gedentiithigt Da malt has-te ihn dieser furchtbare Linn ger gepackt nach derGroszmacht: Geld. Unsd dieser Hunger hatte ihn dnrih das Leben gepeitscht, hatte ihn empor getragen, hatte ihn zu dem gemacht, was er war: zu einem reichen Mann, zum Besitzer einer der größten Fabri- ; ken. Dieser Hunger hatte ihm man den Weg gezeigt zu seiner ietziaenl Frau· Sie war die isiniige Tonneer seines Prinzipals. Sehr hiibfirli, sehr jung. Der alte Diener Schelmeyer trat ein. Auch er war ganz verstört; er hatte so gut achtgegeben. Jmmer war die Thiir zum Kontor fest ver schlossen gewefen, so oft er auch daran probiert hatte. Und zu bemerken war auch nie irgend etwas gewesen. »Herr Marverg,« sagte der Diener. »Die gniidige Frau ist soeben ange can-men« Der Chef erhob sich. »Weisz sie es schon?" fragte er unsicher. Schelmeyer schüttelte den Kopf. »Ich habe nichts gesagt· Die gnä tdige Frau ist nur für einen Augen sblick in kdie Wohnung gegangen. Sie hat gefragt, wo der Herr ist« Wären Sie, Schelmener,« sagte Franz Marberg. »Nun besinnen Sie sich einmal genau: Jst Ihnen denn gar nie hier irgend etwas aufgefals len? Kleinigkeiten können da oft Bedeutung gewinnen-« Ter Alte wurde verlegen »Ja. Ein einziges Mal,·Herr Mar-» berg. Und das war am selben Abend, als Sie von hier wegfuhren Eigent lich in der Nacht daraus. Da hörte ich um ungefähr halb 12 Uhr ein Ge räusch, als ob irgensd jemand hier die Thür schlosse. Jch rannte zum Thor hinunter. Aber da war nichts. Nur ein Radsahrer sauste draußen ain Staket Vorbei." »Habt-it Sie irger etwas von — von dem Nakdfahrer gesehen'e« »Nein. Aber setzt war sein sonst so «bli·r"hendes, selbstzusrjedenes Gesicht ganz fahl. Ein Radsahrerl Und in derselben Nacht, sdie jenem Austritt folgte, hatte Schelmeher ihn gesehen. Und er trug einen LoldenmanteL — Dagobert besaß ein Rad. Jn jener Nacht hatte lHerr Marberg seinen UeberroeL in dem idie Kontor- und Kassenschliissel staken, im Speiseraum seiner Villa vergessen, als er sein Schlaszitnmer aufsuchte Dagobert besaß auch einen LodenmanteL Und Dagobert wußte genau, wo der Schliissel lag zu der alten Uhr. Der einsame Mann stöhnte auf wie unter einem körperlichen Schmerz. Er warf die Arme aus den Tisch und legte fest den grauen Kon daraus. »Dagoln-rt !« Es lag eine große Qual in dem ei nen Wort. llnd doch auch —- vielleicht zum erstenmal —- eine große Vater liebe.
