Martin Propst. living six miles west
of town, says he has a rain guage, and
it shows that from Sunday noon of
May, 11 till Sunday noon May IS, there
was a rainfall of 85 inches, at his
place; that it rained every day during
that time and until yesterday, when
the sun shown nearly all day. The
ground is now thoroughly soaked, and
he thinks a corn crop is assured, be
yond a peradventure. This morning
every farmer was at work in his fields
planting corn.

Jas. Wiley of York county. Neb.,
was visiting in this vicinity today.
Superintendent Ed Uignell went out
to Louisville this afternoon on the B.
& M. transit car, to inspect the road
bed on the old main line.
Mrs. Mark Woods of Lincoln is
visiting in the city with Mrs. W. L.
Pickett. Mr. Woods will arrive this
evening for a visit over Sunday.
Ed. Eaton returned last night from
Omaha, where he went to consult an
oculist about removing a piece of steel
from Ills eye. The doctor succeeded
in getting Ed's eje out, but the steel
still remains. lie will have a glass
eye fitted next week.
The Cass county assessors are quite
slow in making their returns tbisyear.
The law requires the completion of
this work by the first day of June, but
as yet only two assessors have re
ported, these being from Liberty and
South Bend precincts.
Senator Thurston and Congressman
Mercer have secured a 825,000 appro
priation of river improvements at Ne
braska City. If a petition, signed by
Plattsmouth people, were forwarded
these gentlemen, perhaps they could
secure an appropriation of a few dol
lars to improve the Missouri river at
this point.

There was a rumor going the rounds
today that the woman and child that
disappeared from their home in Shaf-
erville yesterday had been drowned,
but nothing definite could be learned.
Judge Spurlock this morning issued
the license and performed the cere
mony that united the fortunes of
Michael Chronister, aged fifty-four,
and Mrs. Elizabeth Josephine Cronk
hite, aged forty. Both of them gave
their residence as Pottawatamie coun
ty, Iowa.
A party of officials in C. B. &
Q. special car" No. 93 came in this
morning shortly after No. 5 left. The
party are inspecting the bridges of the
Burlington system, and from here
