The Press has been devoting con
siderable space for thepast two days
trying to explain to the public how it
came about that Judge Chapman was
defeated. Their excuses are varied
and rather laughable when every one
realizes that the voters had become
tired of the judge aud by their ballots
retired him to private life. There is
no excuse to offer for no one is to
blame but the judge himself, and the
public knows, as does the Press, the
cause for the retirement, but as the
battle is over, the slain removed and
things put in shape for another battle,
"let the dead past bury the dead."

Now doth the gentle housewife busy
herself with thoughts of the Thanks
giving dinner. Of course the noble
turkey is sure of a representation, and
on that occasion will be the central
figure, while ranged around on the
board in glorious profusion will be
vegetables, cakes, cookies, pies and
such appetizing viands as only the
careful housewife knows how to pre
pare. May such a feast fall to the lot
of every one on that day is our earnest
wish.

ary 1. For a number of years they
have allowed a . minimum of 20,000
pounds in a car of this class of freight
and under this rule, five or thirty
horses or mules might be shipped as
long as there was 20,000 pounds. This
has led private concerns to build hun

effect of cutting out the cars of the
railroads. It is now proposed that

for each additional 1,000 pounds.
