A movement is on foot to secure the
commutation of the sentence of Mur
derer Harry Hill to that of. im
prisonment for life. lawyer Matt
Gering, counsel for Hill, has the
matter in hand and it is re
ported that be is now canvassing
among the jury, in the hope of secur
ing their signatures to a petition to
the governor asking for the commu
tation. One of the jurors, J no. T.
Nims, says he was approached and
requested to sign, but flatly refused.
It is thought, howevei, that there are
one or two of the jurors who will sign
at any rate. Whether or not Mr. Ger
ing is successful in his mission, he pro
poses to spare no fair means to pre
vent Hill's execution on March 1,1895,
as fixed by the supreme court of the
state.
