Elmwood News
Virgil Woods of Eimwood was a
visitor in Lincoln on last Monday
where he was looking after some
business matters for the store here.
While the farm work has not been
pressing John Dankliff has with the
assistance of his neighbors been plac
ing a concrete floor in the new barn
which he recently built.
The Elmwood football squad with
their coach were over to Peru last
Friday for a game with the Peru
team and say they had a good game
and all enjoyed the trip but we are
not going to say anything about the
score.
Myron Boyd, who has been in. the
west for the past month, where he
has been assisting in the potato har
vest, returned home last Saturday
night and reports many potatoes
grown there, but he was glad to be
home again.
Uncle Richard Tolhurst who has
been so poorly of late still remains
in delicate health. His sen, Harry
who makes his home at Raymond
was a visitor at home to see the fath
er on Monday of this week, remain
ing over night.
Roll Miller who with some parties
from Lincoln were out in Colorado
where they went to hunt pheasant
returned last Saturday and reports a
very fine time out there where there
was many of the pheasants to shoot
and as well much other game.
Some one hundred and fifty peo
ple last week gathered at the Fath
ers and Daughters banquet which
wa3 sponsored by the Christian
church and a most enjoyable time
was had. Addresses were made by
the local ministersand some from
Bethany. Rev. Ernest Baker presid
ed as toastmaster.
At the Albert Dankliff home avery
fine block corn crib has been con
structed. Preparations were made
last spring and as the materials were
on the ground and there was plenty
of work obtainable the crib had as
well be constructed and ready for
good crops will surely come to Cass
county with another year.
Messrs. Watson Jones and Howard
Capwell were out securing pledges
for the making of the budget for
the caring for the expenses of the
Methodist church of Elmwood and
while they had to drive over a good
deal of territory, and see many peo
ple they were rewarded with many
pledges for the coming year. Both
gentlemen are very earnest workers
in the church.
Ludwig Bornemcicr and Milo Fris
by were over to Lincoln on last Sat
urday where they were attending
the football game between Iowa and
Nebraska and they say it was a great
game. Byron Hauptman, coach and
superintendent of the Elmwood
schools. Spencer Ledger were there
with a large number of the students
of the Elmwood high school who all
enjoyed the game Immensely.
This Is a Good Idea.
The Fairview school which is lo
cated two miles south and two miles
east of Elwood, while it may look
like a corrall or a barricade is to our
thinking a very fine idea as they have

on the side next to the highway built
a high solid board fence so that
the scholars will not inadvertedly
run into the highway for a ball or
other things and thus be maimed or
crippled thereby. Just recently there
has been many accounts in papers
of little ones getting killed or maim
ed by autos on the highway.
Will Hold Community Sale.
J. W. Crays and a brother, both
of Lincoln, came to Elmwood and on
the vacant lot in the rear of the Ty
son building built stock pens and
yards for the carrying on of a com
munity sale they receiving livestock
and implements and what not from
the farming community, and as well
from the town which they will sell
there sale days which in this in
stance will be held on Saturday. This
will afford an avenue whereby alJ
can when they have something for
which they have no further use, dis
pose of it and when it can go into
the hands of someone who wants it
and can use the same.
Spending Winter in East.
Grandmother Ferguson who has
been staying with her son, Charles,
13 now visiting with a daughter at
Dixon, Illinois, where she will make
her home for the winter. She depart
ed last week and word from there
tells of her arriving all right and
feeling pretty well altho slightly
tired from her long trip.
Return from the Rockies.
Messrs. and Mesdames Emil Rose
now and Harry Green who were
spending a week in Denver and the
adjacent Rocky mountains where
they had a cottage in the foothills
and where they enjoyed a week of
solid pleasure, returned home last
Saturday night well pleased with
their trip.
Visited at Havelock.
Twenty-four of the members ol
the Ladies' Aid of the Elmwood
Methodist church were over to Have
lock on last Tuesday where they were
meeting with Mrs. C. C. Jackman of
that place who was for a number of
years a member of the aid here, but
who some time ago with the husband
moved to Havelock to live. All en
joyed the visit very much and as
well Mrs. Jackson to get to see all
her old time friends again.
Democrats Organize.
One evening last week the demo
crats representing four precincts.
Stove Creek, Greenwood and Tipton,
met at Elmwood. The district is tc
include Elmwood, whic his Mur
dock and Wabash but there were no
one present so the territory wa3 or
ganized anyway with the election of
George F. Wilson as chairman. El
mer J. Hallstrom who wa3 present,
acted as the secretary, Mr. Hallstrom
being chairman of the democratic
county central committee. They ar
ranged for meeting as follows: One
for Elmwood on October 20th at 7
o'clock when it is expected that all
candidates of the democratic party
will be present and participate in
the meeting. Another meeting will
be at held at Eagle on the 27th, this
one however will be at 2:00 in the
afternoon and will be like the Elni-
wood meeting where all the candi
dates will be present and speakers
from the state speaking force -will be
present and make addresses. Let
every democratic voter be out tc
these meetings.
Many Attend Convention.
There were many in attendance at
the fireman's convention which is
being held in Omaha this week.
Among some who attended on last
Tuesday were Henry Mullens, George
F. Wilson, Jacob Sterner, Lyle Par
ish, George Brinton and Lester Brin
ton, leaving enough at home in case
ot fire to care for the protection of
the property.
Visited Rock Bluffs Sunday.
Albert Blende and wife and La
vern Nickels a,nd wife;, with the
dawning of a very fine day last Sun
day turned the prow of their auto
towards the east and continued un
til they got to the Misouri rivei
where the work is being done on
the river and also visited the ancient
city of Rock Bluffs, also visiting
King Hill and Queen Hill, this be
ing their first visit in that section.
J. R. Reeder Visits Town.
J. R. Reeder, teacher in the
Plattsmouth schools and as well a
candidate for the office of county
superintendent of schools, was a visi
tor in Elmwood last Monday and was
meeting his many friends.
Makes Good Choice of Car.
L. L. Caygill. living just on the
east edge of Elmwood and still a
farmer, was over to Lincoln last week
and while there made the purchase
of a very fine new auto, this time
taking the selection of a four door
Plymouth. Mr. Caygill and family are
liking this new car very much.
Does It Mean Work Soon?
A party of state surveyors from
Lincoln were working on the O street
road from the end of the pavement
east, where rumor says there is tc
be some four miles of pavement laid
this fall. The surveying re-inforced
the rumor and inspired the hopes
of the people that the work will
soon begin. Whether there is any
foundation to the rumor or not the
people are hoping that the work will
get under way soon.
ATTEND CONVENTION
From Wednesday's Dally
A large number of the members
of the Plattsmouth Volunteer Fire
department were at Omaha last even
ing and today to attend the state
convention of the Nebraska Volun
teer firemen. The meetings and head
quarters are at the Rome hotel and
attended by 1,000 out state firemen.
The Omaha fire department has ar
ranged a fine exhibition of the work
of their department in honor of the
visitors and which will demonstrate
the latest of fire fighting equipment.
Many social features have been ar
ranged to entertain the visiting fire
men by the Omaha people and which
have added to the pleasures of the
big state meeting.
The 1935 convention will be held
at Hastings, it was voted at the
Tuesday night session.
IN SERIOUS CONDITION
Jay Larson, Louisville man, whe
was so seriously burned at the Ly-man-Richey
sand pits at Meadow a
few weeks ago, is reported as being
in very serious condition. Mr. Lar
son was injured when he fell on a
two line 33,000 voltage electric line
and but for a safety device on the
line would have been instantly kill
ed. He was hurried to the hospitrl
and has been under constant care
since that time and in the last few
days has grown very much worse.
