Just to get a line on the admin istration, it might be well to take a census and find out if parents still are naming babies "Nira." :o: Among other criticisms of the Whistler "Mother" stamp is the point that it would look a lot better if it said "Two" instead of "Three." -:o:- - Former Vice-President Curtis says if he were to write a book, nobody would believe him. Was that the ex perience Dolly Gann had with her book? :o: We always know we are in a good, old-fashioned 100-per-cent American home when we see a picture of a bas ket of fruti hanging on one of the walls of the dining room. - -:o:- When all other Dillinger clues failed, the Detroit News advised looking for him on the roster of the Cincinnati Reds; but now that's failed, and they're suspecting Dil linger is dead. . -:o: Washington gossips say Senator La Follette is feeling the lure of a third party race pretty strongly thess days. It takes a special sensitiveness tc feel a lure from something nobody else can even see. :o: "An intimate says General John son is a most companionable soul in his hours of ease," notes (Harry Wade in the Detroit News. "Few of us have seen the general when he has let down his face for the night." :o: How nice- it would have been to cast George Arliss as Pancho Villa. Unless, of course, the French would object to having Pancho imitate Vol taire, the Jews Rothschild, the Eng lish . Disraeli and. the Republicans 'Alexander Hamilton. Or tho" Mex icans become aroused at all those fellows imitating Pancho. :o: Now we know what became of all tho old-fashioned Irish ball players when the Italians and the Czechs drove them out of the big leagues. They went into the Jewish League in Philadlphia. A Jewish League box score in the Philadelphia Inquirer lists Ilarkins, MeGarvey, Dunn, Pat terson, O'Donnell and Mackey. n C UH fciuft Fuuia Sgri. Why not, in the interests of economy, take- a few of the criminals' guns away from them and give them to the agents? :o: One side in the controversy says the trouble is what the NRA is doing to business; and the other side says the trouble is what business is doing to the NRA. It looks as if there can be no real settlement until the Liter ary Digest takes a poll. :o: Of course, we are very glad Mary land was founded 300 years ago, and it has been a very useful little com monwealth, from Lord Calvert down to H . L. Mencken, but we hadn't ex pected to go to all the trouble red 3 cent stamps can make just on Mary land's account. f :o: The Boston Transcript says a good many of President Roosevelt's advis ers remind one of old King Canute's courtiers who assured that monarch the tide .wouldn't dare to. disregard , his commands. The record indicates,! however, that even Canute's courtiers were convinced, after one erperiment. ' :o: "All women are squirrels," says Edna Ferber, "because they instinc tively hide things." It would be all right if they hid only things that be longed to them, but when they hide everything of the menfolk's from their spring neckties to the keys to the family car, no mere explanation of squirrelity i3 going to answer. Coi jrcSaS Hari-kari Europ is reconciled to the failure of disarmament. It should also re concile itself to the failure of the next war to settle anything. . :o: Many a poker player who has seen dawn cramp his winning would like to be on the Byrd expedition. In the Antarctic it will be night from now until next fall. :o: Perhaps one cause of the depres sion, is that in the old days mother made undies for herself and the girls from flour sacks. Lately she buys silk for all of them. :o: - A string of New York orange drink stands has been sold in bankruptcy court. The new owner, we trust, will continue to operate the stands, as this is no time to turn a crew of red hpaded cirls out upon a distressed world. . :o: By getting a new office in the de partment of agriculture Professor Tugwell will manage a 25 per cent increase in salary for himself. Now, if he will manage as well for the farmprs whom he has taken under his care, that will be something. :o: Short skirts may be coming back as the fashion sharks predict, but the chanse will have less influence upon .women's ready-to-wear bust ness than when long skirts succeed Pfl short. Tho eirls can take the scissors and make a short one out of a long one. :o: A f.irmrr writes that he will be the gladdest person in Nebraska when the denressio nis finally over. Not that he's hard pressed personally but his daughter brought her bus band back to the farm to live until things got better, and he's an effi ciency expert. :o: General Johnson assures the "lit tle fellows" who imagine they have been injured by NRA regulations that they are just seeing things. Lit tle fellows who have trouble meet ing their pay roll3 might pay in scrip with one of the general's speeches printed on the back. :o: II. L. Mencken speaking of the "brain trust" says: "Go back to teaching sophomores to be ashamed of their fathers." lie might have made that statement a little more effective, had he said: Go back to teaching sophomores -so.. their fathers may -De asi1raed of them. :o: A California man was convicted the other day of first degree murder on two counts for killing his wife and another man. The jury imposed the death penalty only in the mur der of his wife, however. Probably a light fine will settle the other mat ter. At any rate, we see that the ends of justice arc whittled down to a pretty fine point nowadays, es pecially in California. Our opinion is that June Roble'3 return home would have been a happy event even without those two "ones" on her grade card. :o: Movie actress, denying that she's to marry Max Baer, says she doesn't even know him. As if that had any thing to do with it. :o: It appears now that some of the sins of boom time parents are going to be visited upon their children in the form of bond issues. :o: It's nice to hear the old songs. and educational, too in the case of many which prove to be not nearly bo good as we once thought they were. :o: A good place to put one's trouble's, says somebody, is in your pocket which is full of holes but say! Some troubles are too big to slip through the holes. . :o: Too bad the health authorities didn't discover dandelion greens be fore they did spinach. Tho annual lawn menace might have been done away with. :o: Recent strong south winds may have bscn caused by the whispering campaigns in Oklahoma, where there are more than 1,200 candidates for state office. :o: Tardy appreciation of one who ap pears to be quite an artist: Indiana has raised her reward, offered for the capture of John Dillinger, from $25 to $1,000. -:o:- We noticed an old-timer examin ing the fixtures in a beer place the other day. He remarked, "These light boards they use now may be all right, but in my day they needed 2 by 12's." ;o: Business really is much easier than it was. Two years ago it wasn't pos sible to go a block along Main street without having four persons tell you the priceless things Amos and Andy said the night before. :o: The record of the 50-yard sprint at Vassar which had stood for fifty years was broken the other day by the daughter 'of the girl who set it. If Vassar were in Kentucky, a new futuritv race micht crow out of this. .... . - -rr ':o: : Great Britain announces a trade war with Ja'pan, but adds that it will be entirely on a friendly basis. Indeed, somewhat like the trade wars the bootleggers and beer runners used to nut on in our bis cities before repeal. :o: The St. Louis Globe-Democrat won ders what the heathen think about us when they see us in the movies, and wonders also why one of them doesn't write a book about it. Per haps, because he is a heathen, he is too polite to'-w?press an opinion. :o: The Yemeni army is reported to have retreated toward Sana, after the fall of the seaport town, Hodei dah. This, says Eddihix, should not be confused "with the battle of hi- de-ho, which Helen Kane, the boop oon-a-doon cirl. lost in the courts last week. :o: "Jim" Reed is against the new deal. So arc many others. But on one point he does an injustice to our favorite- congressman. Reed predi cates his candidacy on the promise that "somebody ought to tell the peo ple what i3 happening." In heaven's name where has he ben that he hasn't heard of Dr. Wirt and Congressman McGugin? :o:- A PARADISAIC DREAM I'm singing the praise of a dish that's fit For the board of an epicure Whose savor and odor on mortal taste Yields an almost magical lure. With lots of good gravy and rich pie crust. And seasoned until just right, You'll find nothing else on the bill of fare That so tempts human appetite. A whiff of its fragrance as you lift the lid Is a dream of Arcady's shore;; And a sense of Elysian food greets the taste That has never been met with before. You'll feast for the nonce in Paradise, And dine on repasts of the blest. As your soul soars aloft ia realms of blias, Till your Jaded maw craves rest. Then you'll get back to earth with its sordid careB And awake with a long drawn g j er Y , Yet memory will dwell cn the taanna you ate When you absorbed that chick- en pie. K- An observer says the receivership of bankrupt concerns in Chicago has developed into a "pure, simple rack et." Pure in the sense of being un adulterated, we presume. :o: A new kind of soap which leaves no ring in the bathtub is ready for the market. Now for the ringless telephone, and the bath wil be a few moments of uninterrupted pleasure. :o: Pyromanlac motorists who scatter burning cigarette stubs along coun try highways might enjoy their pleas ure trins more if they stopped to watch the prairie and forest fires they start.
