MARIE SMITH BURNED BADLY
Marie Smith, daughter of Mr. and
Mis. Herman Smith, living north of
Nehawka was quite badly burned on
her lower limbs and feet "Monday
when she spilled a kettle of hot rhu
barb. She has been treated regularly
by Dr. Hansen and is doiug as well
as could be expected under the cir
cumstances. When tiic ll.ubarh was cooked rhe
touk it from the stove and attempted
to place it on the cream separator.
As she went to raise it, the edge of
the kettle caugln on a part of the
separator and the hot mass was dash
ed on her. striking her just above
the knees and burning downward to
her feet. She is unable to walk and
is very uncomfortable to say the

VISITS OLD HOME

Mr. and Mrs. B. J. Reynolds and
their two children, who have for a
number of years heen residing at
Omaha, came down last evening to
vpend a few days with the relatives
and old time friends. Mr. Reynolds,
or "Charley" as he was so well known
in this city, has retired from active
work on the switching force of the

position with the company and is
able to be on the job each -day. The
family are doing nicely and Mr,
Reynolds is looking well and hear

BLAIR TO VOTE ON BONDS
Bluir. May 7. An election to vote
again on swiming pool bonds, which
were declared illegal due to the fact
that the first election carried by only
a small edge, and the law requires
a three-fifths majority, has been call
ed for Tuesday.
A statement issued by the city
council says that it was due to an
error in the statute books, dating
back to 1913, and only corrected in
the 1ft. 31 issue.
After consulting with well knowu
authorities on municipal law it has
been found that the city must pay for
the swimming pool as contracted for.
If the bonds are not voted a judg
ment can be obtained and the money

hurst have changed their office and

celebrated the day by a trip to Ante
lope park at Lincoln, where they met
and enjoyed the sociability of R. M.
doatman and the family who were
also there for the day.
Mr. James Hermance. the owner
of the filling station, was a visitor for
the greater portion of last week at
the home of his brother in the west
ern part of the state, and during his
Fabaence the station was conducted by
Win. Paul, his neighbor.
The ladies of the Alvo Woman's
Reading club were holding a meet
ing at the basement of the Meth
odist church and also providing a
very fine program, and sure they did
not forget the good eats which is
always a feature of their meetings.
On Thursday of last week Charles
Gcdbey passed the sixty-fourth mile
stone in his life journey and the oc
casion was celebrated by the good
wife giving a dinner in his honor.
Mr and Mrs. Floyd E. Dickerson and
the kiddies from Lincoln were pres
ent to grace the occasion.
Mr. and Mrs. C. H. Kirkpatrick
were host and hostess at their home
last Sunday and had a3 their guests

long friends of this very fine couple.
They all enjoyed the occasion very
much.
Mrs. Jennie Rouse who has been
staying In Lincoln for some time was
a visitor in Alvo and guest at the
home of her daughter. Mrs. Martin
J. Nickel for a few days, also visit
ing with her many friends here, and
later departed for Stella, where she
is spending some time with her
daughter, Mrs. Uhley.
L. M. Scott, operator for the Rock
Island at Alvo. was sent to South
Bend for two weeks to relieve the
agent at that place, Mr. R. M. Davis,
who is taking a vacation for a short
time, and the place which was occu
pied by Mr. Scott here was filled by
R. Stieuston, coming from a station
in Kansas, who will work during the
absence of Mr. Scott.
Harold Christensen was hauling
corn from the Rehmeyer elevator on
last Wednesday to his farm home
north of town, and while he was
looking after some business matters
in the grain office the team con
cluded they would go home and de
parted, causing Mr. Christensen a
lively chase to catch the rapidly
moving wagon with the load of corn.
Attended Family Reunion.
Daniel Uuetr and the family were
ever to Wabash on last Sunday where
they went to attend a family reunion
which was held there by the Riier
(family and where all enjoyed the oc-
getting together occasionally renews
the ties of the family and is always
most enjoyable. More families should
thus gather occasionally and enjoy
the society of the family, which is
the very first unit in our civilization.
Cocking Club Organized.
With the assistance of Miss Jessie
Baldwin, from the county agent's of
fice, some fourteen girls of Alvo or
ganized a cooking club, they meet
ing at the home of Mr. and Mrs. F.
L. Edwards, with Miss Knthcryn Ed
wards a-; their hostess. The next
meeting 5s to be held at the home of
Kiss Juliana Taylor, who will en
tertain them.

The senior clas of the Alvo high
school selected as their sneak day
last Wednesdav and under the spon
sorship of the superintendent. A. T.
Snedgen and principal.. Don H. Keis
ter. went to Omaha, being taken by
3 truck, and where they enjoyed the
day seeing Omaha, just as she is.
They visited the principal places in
the big town as far as they could in
the limited time and returned home
in the evening happy, and their
minds well stored with the Incidents

Mr. Orville Ellsworth, who with
the good wife came from the northern
portion of the tate to Alvo. purchas
ing a home in the west end of town,
made their home here, proving them

City Dads Organize.
Following the election of the vil
lage of Alvo some weeks since, last
week the new council was organized
and are now ready for work. In the
placing of the officers the lot of be

by virtue of this position the mayor
of the city, was again conferred on
Arthur Dinges. S. C. Boyles was se
lected as the treasurer and R. M.
Coatman was elected clerk of the
board. This is an excellent lineup.
Board of Education Meet.
The board of edu-atin of the
Consolidated school of Alvo. met last
week and considered the matter of
the selection of the faculty for the
coming year and also the matter of
transportation of the scholars to and
from school for the coming year.
They will call for bids for the driving
of the school busses for five routes
which they revise out of the present
six routes of the past. The alloting
of the contracts for the driving the
busses and their equipage will be
given by bids which will be adver
tised during the summer. The ros
ter of the faculty will be as follows:

be the principal, and coach as well:
Miss EHoise Pool, who has also taught
during the past year is elected to the
position of mathematics: Miss Mar

The grade teachers will be, for the
primary. Miss Mary Corea, of Oma
ha; the third and fourth grades will
be instructed by Miss Mary Brandt,
the fifth and sixth grade will be
looked after by Miss Hazel Duckhute
and the seventh and eighth will be
tought by Miss Lois Rossnoggle. The
caretaker cf the school and grounds
vill be the present efficient gentle

IN GLENW00D JAIL
Ralph Kelly and Bene Weaver of
Plat tsmouth came to Malvern on a
friendly ffeit and partook of too
much of the convivial fluid. A con
troversy arose between them which
they undertook to settle in a pug
ilistic manner. Marshall Jake Fra
zier, who was called in to referee the
bout but who was in a disgruntled
humor, turned the whole affair over
to Mayor Whitfield, who called a
count of. 30 days for each. They are
now the guests cf Mills county here
in Glen wood at the Hotel DeMoss.

Fune al services of Roy Howard
Boyles were held from the home of
his parents. Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Boy
les on Monday afternoon at 2:30
o'clock, and were conducted by the
Rev. W. W. Kratzer of the Christian
church. Interment was made in the
Elmwood cemetery. Following is an
outline of his life:
Roy Howard Boyles was born May
17, 1886, near Elmwoou, Nebraska,
the eldest son of Elmer and Sarah
Ellen Boyles, and departed this life
at the home of his parents in Elm
wood. May 2. 1931, aged 44 years, 11
months and 15 days.
He grew to manhood, attending
school, graduating from Elmwood
high school in 1903, later attending
Lincoln Business College from which
he graduated.
While traveling for an eastern
Publishing House, he met Maude Es-
jther Howell of Deadwood, South Da
'kota, whom he married in 1913. To
'this union two children were born,
Bert Elmer, aged 17, and Helen
Blanche aged 11 years.
He was baptized into (he Christian
church at Elmwood at the age of 15.
He was a member of Elmwood Camp
No. 560 W. O. W.
He leaves to mourn his passing, his
wife, son and daughter of Lincoln,
mother and latrler and one brother

he is improving very rapidly.
Boy Brings Gladness.
The home of Mr. and Mrs. Ray
Renalds was made joyous when the
stork came as day was breaking,
Saturday morning, bringing this
happy couple a fine five and a half
pound son. All are well pleased over
the arrival and Grandpa Wm. Shee
han is wearing a smile.
Still Improving.
Teddy Harms, who has been home
for some time since his operation at
the hospital has continued to show
improvement, last week visited the
hospital and Dr. George Pratt, his
physician, and was being given a
checking up so .as to be sure of his
improvement which showed up well.

The house of Mrs. Frank Schloni
ker, formerly Mrs. Omar Coon, is be
ing painted on the inside and out
and put in excellent condition by
Mr. Schloniker. they having returned
