The amazing showing made by
William Sacks of St. Loui3 has set
the boys on the telegraph desk to
speculating that if a man can draw
that many Missouri votes on a light

draw three times as much next time
on a heavy wine and whisky plat
form. A Wall street banker says that
school children own the majority of
Uncle Sam's $SS3,000.000 of "baby
bonds" thrift bonds. It is probable
that American children own enough
of these bonds to wipe out the en
tire national debt of Mexico. Financ
ially, the children of our generation
are extremely fortunate. Do you re
member when a penny satisfied an
eight-year-old boy, and a nickel look
ed as big as a wagon wheel? Them
days are gone forever.

WOMEN'S CLOTHES AND MEN'S
Figures from the census some
times disclose matters of real hu
man interest. Thus the census of
manufacturers of New York City
show that the city, which is a great
manufacturing center for clothing,
produces women's clothing to twice
the value of men's. Here are the fig
ures: '
"Men's clothing. 4 SO million dol
lars; furnishing goods, 50 million;
hats and caps. 45 million; total, 575
million.
"Women's clothing, S66 million
dollars; corsets, 13 million dollars;
furs, 132 million; millinery and lace
goods, 162 million; total, 1,173 mil
ion." Possibly New York centers on wo
men's apparel rather than men's.
But suppose the New York figures
are representative of the nation's
manufactures. Undoubtedly there are
sour economists who would insist
that women are extravagant, and
that if they would reduce the ex
penditure for clothing, after the fash
ion of the men, they could have larg
er savings accounts. But who would?
