GREAT JEWEL THEFT
PRESENTS MYSTERY
Mrs. Janney's Secretary and Son-in-Law
Axe Suspected of Tak
ing the Jewels.
Mrs. Samuel Van Zile Janney was
mysteriously robbed last night of
jewels valued at $50,000. The Job
was done by someone who knew the
combination of the safe, and might
have teen performed after midnight,
or earlier in the evening while the
Janneys were the dinner guests of Mr.
Richard Ferguson and his mother.
The detectives have failed to un
earth a single clue. Miss Esther
Maitland. Mrs". Janney's private sec
retary, is the only member of the
household who knew the combination
and in her Mrs. Janney says she has
absolute confidence.
This trust, however. Was consider
ably shaken when a mysterious tel
ephone conversation was overheard
between Miss Maitland and Chapman
Price, the husband of Mrs. Janney's
daughter. Mr. Price left home yes
terday afternoon after a bitter quar
rel with his wife.
Further developments in this in
teresting robbery case will be unfold
ed on the screen at the Parmele The
ater Sunday afternoon and evening,
when Blanche Sweet will be seen for
the first time in "The Girl in the
Web," her newest Jesse D. Hampton-
Pat he feature.
CONDITION OF CROPS
IS GENERALLY GOOD
Some Wheat Seems to Be of Poorer
Quality Than Last Season, But
Other Ciops Are Fine.
The general crop conditions
throughout this portion of Cass coun
ty are reported as being generally
favorable as reported by several of
the leading farmers of this locality.
The only departure from the general
favorable condition is that of a por
tion of the wheat crop that is re
ported as showing some signs o.;
weakness as the wheat is not as
strong and sturdy as last year and
the stocks in a number of cases ap
pears light and inclined to show
signs of having suffered from weath
er conditions. Just how much this
condition prevails has not been fully
determined as the farmers have not
all made close examinations of their
fields.
The corn conditions are of the best
is the general report and the wheat
crop one of the best that has been
reported in this locality for a great
many years and one that cannot help
but produce a large and very favor
able crop for the farmer.
Despite the cold weather that was
thought to have seriously affected
the potato crop the yield this year
looks in fine shape and generally it
is most favorable with all Indica
tions of producing a large yield per
acre.
