A Delirious Democrat Distorted.
Y. II. Kkl-uii, a stalwart blacksmith
employed in tlni B. & M. shopa here and
a strong iicliever in the tlenio:ratic faith
a was niAnifebte.d by his hilarioua dis
position and the white hat and black
baud attire borne upou his cranium,
opened lire upon the town early yesterday
morning with the threat that he intended
t paint the town red before evening.
UU stHtemeut was agreeably received by
all to whom he made the threat and all
confidence was put in his capability
as a painter, by the progress he had
already made. He continued to bowl
up on democratic campaign whiskey
until he felt hinis.lf prepared for auy
style of a fray. He arose in the morning
as ambitiou-. us his many democratic
brttlir'-n w'il on the m ining of the sixth,
and qui-tly laid away a sore head as the
sun lowered beyond the horizon, as
many democrats will do on that event
ful evening. Not lining able to satisfy
a thousand desires within his breast, he

The mother was informed and she im
mediately aroused her husband from a
sound slumber. Upon being informed
he ssnt the child out to t.-ll the inturder
that there was no one at Home but his
mother and to ask him in. He opened
the door aud was about to enter when
he came in contact with Cushing's fist.
One severe blow followed another until
his face resembled a meat block. A man
was never more completely disfigured in
so short a time. II id a policeman not
appeared upon the scene, Cushing's re
venge would have been more severe.
The intruder now nurses his sick head
while passing away the quiet hous in
the cooler. The police on searching his
pockets found him loaded with an as

saloot or drug shop, most of it demo
cratic campaign water.

SirCCESSKCL TEST OF TELEPHONING FROM
BUFFALO TO BOSTON AND NEW YORK.
The Buffalo Evening News reports
that the new long distance telephone,
which is soon to be put in operation there
was tested by the officers and directors
of the Bill Telephone Company on the
14th inst. The connections had been put
in at 5 p. m. and communication was at
once opened between Boston, Springfield,
New York, Troy and Buffalo. The wires
worked well, and conversation between
the most distant points could be easily
carried on as if both parties were within
a block or two of each other in the city.
The line belongs to the American Tele
phone nnd Telegraph Company of New
York, and is 800 miles in length, going
through Troy down to New York thence
to Boston via SpriugBeld, Mass. This
test shows tluit the problem of long dis
tance telephoning has been solved and
all interested were congratulated oa its
success.

lightened metropolis origmaiiy, anu iron
hence extended over the country, there i3
little doubt that sooner or later this new
method will supersede laughing'gas aud
ether in other big cities of the Union
The process in question Is very simple,
scarce any apparatus being required be
yond an ordinary two cell battery, with
vibrator attachment. This attachment is
a thin strip of metal, fastened at the ends,
which is made to vibrate a thousand or
more times per second by the electric cur
rent. At each vibration the circuit i3 cut
off and renewed again, the effect being to
give a perfectly steady flow of the mys
terious fluid. In order to make sure that
the flow is quite satisfactory the operator
tunes the machine assisted by a little
reed tuning pipe until the strip of metal
sings "A." So far, so good.
Now to the battery are attached three
wires. Two of them have handles at the
ends, and the third is hitched to a for
ceps. The patient in the chair is given a
handle to hold in each hand, and the cur
rent Is turned on gradually until it Lo
comes paiufuL Then he Is told to grasp
the handles as strongly as possible, the
electricity having been switched off for
a moment is turned on again suddenly,
and the dental surgeon applies his forceps
simultaneously to the tooth. The instant
the molar is "touched, it, as well a3 the
parts surrounding, becomes electrified and
absolutely insensible to pain. "When it is
o.;a,rQn n fmm tbet socket, the Eubiect
of the operation feela not the slightest
disagreeable sensation. A jerk and the
tooth is out, the patient drops the handles
and the anair is over. oostoa wr. uuw
