SirCCESSKCL TEST OF TELEPHONING FROM BUFFALO TO BOSTON AND NEW YORK. The Buffalo Evening News reports that the new long distance telephone, which is soon to be put in operation there was tested by the officers and directors of the Bill Telephone Company on the 14th inst. The connections had been put in at 5 p. m. and communication was at once opened between Boston, Springfield, New York, Troy and Buffalo. The wires worked well, and conversation between the most distant points could be easily carried on as if both parties were within a block or two of each other in the city. The line belongs to the American Tele phone nnd Telegraph Company of New York, and is 800 miles in length, going through Troy down to New York thence to Boston via SpriugBeld, Mass. This test shows tluit the problem of long dis tance telephoning has been solved and all interested were congratulated oa its success. Men" ILd iun Med Shirts, 40 cents, at EU-in' tls. This attachment is a thin strip of metal, fastened at the ends, which is made to vibrate a thousand or more times per second by the electric cur rent. At each vibration the circuit i3 cut off and renewed again, the effect being to give a perfectly steady flow of the mys terious fluid. In order to make sure that the flow is quite satisfactory the operator tunes the machine assisted by a little reed tuning pipe until the strip of metal sings "A." So far, so good. Now to the battery are attached three wires. Two of them have handles at the ends, and the third is hitched to a for ceps. The patient in the chair is given a handle to hold in each hand, and the cur rent Is turned on gradually until it Lo comes paiufuL Then he Is told to grasp the handles as strongly as possible, the electricity having been switched off for a moment is turned on again suddenly, and the dental surgeon applies his forceps simultaneously to the tooth.
