Geokge D. Meiklejohn, Walt. 3L Seeley, Chairman. Secretary. "Walter Q. Gresiiam will be the next president of the United States. Mn. VeoiiHEEs apologized to the Senate yesterday, while Mr. Ingalls was in the chair. Dartmouth cellege has decided that the students must not play base ball, bat we presume that Tale and Harvard and other colleges will still continue to offer young men reasonable opportunities for the acquirements ef a thorough knowl edge of base ball playing. The government of the United States has attached the 3Iammoth mine in Ari zona for $13,000, ior cutting wood on government land. The woud used no doubt was for running the mill, and if this was the case we think the U. S. at torney should withdraw the suit. Evidently the 6ultan of Morocco has been apprised that the democrats are in pewer and so refuse te submit the differ ences between his kigh and mighty self and this country te arbitration es at first proposed and the deal is declared oft". With Blaine presideut of the United States it would take a bigger inan than turband Turk to knock the chip off the shoulder of Uncle Sam. The communistic tendencies of the PlatUmouth Journal are becoming too strong to be relished by even the ordi nary law-aeiding citizen. Not satisfied with expressing good will and sympa thy towards the strikers, as many geod citizens do, and yet leave the combat ants to fight their own battles, it takei particular pains to magnify every mishap of the company into a gif antic accident and lay it all to the employment of "scabs," not withstanding the well known fact that many accidents have oc curred on the road immediately prior to the strike. It seems to relish a narative of the wreckage and distruction of life and property. And if at all, mildly repre hends the acts of personal violence that lias frequently occurred on our streets in their attempt te intimidate men from a diach&rcre of their dutv. And then to add insult to injury, tells the public at large that the Journal expresses the pub lic sentiment ef Plattsmouth. It is very lent that the city has suffered more rnience and injury by reason of iVs ceurse than from the ini- k,ot the strike and our citi- .tired of the program. the Board of Trade its attention this edition s.2 tl-t c.. sheet, the Journal, condemning Fi. Gorder and Frank Gutaman far bavins with hundreds of others censured the course of the Journal. The facts are, that there are not'twe better citizens ia the town, and that altbeugh Fred Gerier was defeated fer councilman in the first ward, the meat potent reason fer his de feat was because the Journal was for him. Mr. Gorder's defeat meant nothing per sonal against Mr. Gorder, be has the re spect and esteem of the best elements ef beth parties. The methods ef the last council disgusted many of the tax payers, who wanted city improvements poshed eacrgetically te completion, Mr. Gorder was looked upon as being too conserva tive, it seemed we needed some young blood in the council and we got it. As to Mr. Gathman, he is neither a commun ist nor anarchist, but an intelligent pub lic spirited gentleman, and but speaks (he sentiment of this community when he says God knows I don't want to con trol the Journal, and more tli.iu that I do not want my city to be misrepresented by such a sheet. This jolt of trying to injure and belittle the character of old and respected citizens will only injure the man or newspaper that indulges in so re prehensible an act. Thk new high-license law has closed 500 saloons in Pittsburg out of a total of 727 in operation a year ago. The law is doing equally effective work in the re mainder of the state. This is the record which is disrupting the prohibition party throughout Pennsylvania, and sending its members back to the republican fold. Clobo-Democrat. A Warning. The modes of death's approach are va rious, and statistics show conclusively that more persons die from disease of the throat and lungs than any other. It is probable that everyone, without excep tion, receives vast numbers of Tubercle Germs into the system and where these germs fall upon suitable soil they start into life and develop, at first slowly and is shown by a slight tickling sensation in the throat and if allowed to coutiuue their ravages they extend to the lungs produc ing Consumption and to the head, caus ing Catarrh. Now all this is dangerous and if allowed to continue will in time cause death. At the onset you must act with promptness; allowing a cold to go without attention is dangerous and may loose you your life. As soon as you feel that something is wrong with your throat, lungs or nostrils, obtain a bottle of Bos fehee's German Syrup. It will giye you imm-sdrn: relief. The Nobility In ucrnunjr, Tbo manners of people of high rank in Ger many are amusing to a stranger. Nowhere in the world are "dukes an' duchesses an' sich" so unpretentious as here. In the hotel where I am stopping there are several princes of note who are waiting an improvement in the emperor's condition before returning home. Soldiers guard the entrances of the hotels in their honor, but that is the begin ning and end of all ceremony. The Duke of Saxe-Meiningen, a tall, amiable looking man with a big gray beard, and the Duke of Ualm Horsmar, who is blonde and dyspeptic, wan der unconcernedly about, followed by droves of men in magnificent uniforms. Wherever they go people rise and remain standing till tbo men of title have seated themselves. Then there is a general sinking into seats and covert looks toward the great men. When the princesses of whom there are a dozen or so take it it in their royal little blonde heads to dine in the public dining room, an enormous sensation is created. People have to bob up and down repeatedly when they enter, and all the officers kiss tbe princesses' hands with the most reverential and impressive homage. It's funny to see the princesses turn their faces and watch the kissing. They feel about the same interest in it as a cow docs when she turns around and looks contemplatively at the maid who is milking her. The.omcers are dandies out fend out They never attempt to conceal it. They wear stays, and when they take off their helmets and caps in (he big restaurants !n4 hotels they lean over the tables and calmly arrange their hair with little combs and brushes carried in the coat tail pockets. This takes a long time as a rula The spec tators evince a respectful interest in it, and when it is at length completed there is a general sigh of relief and satisfaction, the officers bow to one another politely, and the world rolls on again upon its axis. Blakcly Hall's Berlin Letter in New York Sun. Fersia' Divorce Laws. In Persia, as in Turkey, if a husband wishes a divorce from his wife all he has to do is to order her out of tbe house. As a check upon tbe too free use of this arbitrary proceeding, however, the Persians have constituted a very curious and ingenious custom. While 'the Mohammedan laws make it so easy for a hus band to put away his wife, it secures to her all ber own property. UDder no con sideration can the husband deprive the wife of her own property. As a precaution against divorce, then, the husband in the marriage contract is usually required to promise a considerable sum of money as a wedding gift to his bride, i his money is not forthcoming at the wedding nor expected, but it is placed to the wife's credit as a debt owed to her by tbe husband. As in case of divorce this money would have to be paid over, tbe amount ia usually made so large that it is virtually beyond tbe husband's means. In that case divorce to him would mean financial ruin; and as a Persian's pocket is tbe most susceptible part about him, it follows that there is no divorce. Owing to this ingenious arrangement, although a mere angry order to begone is a teal divorce, there are fewer divorces in Persia than in toe united btates.l nomas Stevens in New York Sun, ttoas, Ayer's Hair Vl;:. to the bair, by stimaLu. tion of the scalp. The Old Doctors Drew blood, modern doctors cleanse it ; hence the increased demand for Altera tives. It is now well known that most diseases are due, not to over-abundance, but to impurity, of the Blood ; and it is equally well attested that no blood medicine is so efficacious as Ayer's Sarsaparilla. " One of my children had a large sore break out on the leg. We applied simple remedies, for a while, thinking the sore would shortly heal. But it grew worse. We sought medical advice, and were told that an alterative medicine . was necessary. Ayer's Sarsaparilla being Recommended above all others, we used it with mar velous results. The sore healed and health and strength rapidly returned." -r- J. J. Armstrong, Weimar, Texas. I find Ayer's Sarsaparilla to be an admirable remedy for the cure of blood diseases. I prescribe it, and it does the work every time." E. L. Pater, M. D., Manhattan, Kansas.
