If You're Interested in an ^4^ Used Car—Be Sure to See Your Ford Dealer The Spencer Pirates won the Class “C" State Basketball tour nament and many coveted honors for their capabilities during the three-day tourney at Lincoln. Sports writers and broadcast ers were extravagant with their praises and the . warm welcome the returning victors received in this area Sunday was evi dence of the admiration felt for the players and the way they conducted themselves at the tournament. A calvacade of cars from O’ Neill greeted the Spencer team and coach Gerald Hueser at the east edge of town Sunday after noon and escorted them through the streets to the road heading to home. At the junction east of S[>encer the players and returning spec tators were met by a large num ber of cars which grew in size as they neared the edge of town. There the fire 'rack, bearing a I large banner with the words ‘ Welcome Champs” met the par ade and led the way through the Spencer streets with siren olow ing to the town hall. A standing ovation greeted the Pirates and their coach at the town hall and each player was given individual introductions. They responded with a few words and businessmen added their con gratulations. Refreshments clos ed the party. The three-game win for Spen cer which gave them the eham|>ionship came through victories over Wayne Hahn 65-59 Thursday, over Fullerton 55-37 Friday and Utica 63-45 in Saturday’s finals. In the opening game Spencer started out cold and in the eyes of many fans it looked like a re peat of the Franklin game last year at the state tourney. At the intermission Wayne led 33-22 and went to the dress ing room with visions of the title in their hands. But visions were all that the Wayne boys ever had as Spencer came on in the third quarter to wipe out the 11 point deficit and enjoy a lead of their own. The fourth quarter was close all the way tout the consistency of the Pirates proved too much for the Wayne boys and Spencer wrapped up its first tourney win 65-59. Although Ronnie Kopecky came through with a beautiful game, scoring 31 points, Roger Fisher will have to take the credit for the third quarter splurge put on by the Pirates. Roger hit 10 points in the quarter. Eight of these ten came in the first three minutes of the quarter. Spencer had an easier time of it in the semi-finals with Ful lerton. The Kopecky brothers garnered 38 points in the game, one point more tthan the entire Fullerton team scored. Ronnie collected 20 and Leonard wound up with 18 points. Only the opening minutes saw Spencer with any difficulty and 27-21 half-time lead to 39-24 in the first six minutes of the sec ond period. Fullerton got only one basket during the third quarter. Spencer piled up a 19-point lead at 51-32 with 3:45 left in the game. The stage was now set for the big one. The one that ev eryone came to see. Some 500 Spencer people had come 200 miles, along with many other people from surrounding towns to cheer the Spencer Pirates. No one was left disappointed as the Pirates came on to show Utica why they were there. Utica played heads up ball the first quarter and managed to stay with the Spencer Pirates, trailing 17-16 going into the sec SPENCER’S PACE OHRI knocks the rebound back to a team mate (not shown) in a battle for possession of the ball during the finals between Utica and Spencer. ond quarter. The second [*enod proved to be about the same as both teams were hitting well from the field. The second half opened with Spencer grabbing a quick two point lead and led by the Kopec ky brothers turned the game into a rout. Leonard hit 27 points and Ronnie followed close be hind with 22. Their effort alone outscored the Utica team who could manage only 45 points in the ball game. Although the scoring efforts of the Spencer Pirates are usually shared by the Kopec ky brothers a lot of credit has to be given to the rest of the Spencer team Bob Hum. Pau Ohri and Roger Fisher played great ball under the pressure of state tournament basketball. The Spencer bench led by Filsinger, Hargens, the Sedlacek brothers, and Olin helped in the victory. Not enough credit can be given to Jerry H.ie ser, coach of the S|>encer team who called the plays when they were needed. Ronnie Koperky received the honor of being selected on the World-Herald All Tourney team — the only one of the five members chosen not In ( lass A His brother Leonard was also rated a* a lower class standout during the tournament Ronnie Is credited for his dead ly outs hooting and his cleverness at drifting through zone* for the short ones.
