He is staying in rooms at the Clarence Tibbets place. Mr. and Mrs. Richard Porter and son moved Saturday from Amelia to a cabin at the C. E. Tibbets place. He is employed at the locker plant. Nine 4.5 inch rockets, each packing the wallop of a large artillery shell, were fired at half-sec ond intervals from a light wt i<?ht launcher. Launcher is hidden by the glare of the fir ing, but a similar device, nick named “xylophone,” can be seen in the foreground. VFW LEADERS MEET Ray H. Brannaman (left), of Denver, Colo., new command er-in-chief of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, chats with Louis Starr, of Portland, Ore., whom he succeeded as com mander at the 48th annual en campment of the VFW held in Cleveland. Brannaman, World War I air corps veteran, was formerly senior vice-com ization. Starr also is a World mander-in-chief of the organ War I veteran. Mr. and Mrs. Edward Donlin, of Omaha, spent the weekend as guests of Mrs. Loretta Hynes. Miss Shirley Luben left for Washington, D. C., Tuesday. On Suinday Mr. and Mrs. M. E. Mullis spoke on young adult work in the church. Mrs. Tompkins spoke on children’s work in the church-school, and Mr. Tompkins spoke on the church-school from the view point of the general superinten dent. INMAN NEWS Mr a.nd Mrs. Kenneth Kesten holtz and son returned Sunday from Walthill, where Kenneth has been working for the Yant Construction Co., for the past several weeks. Mr. and Mrs. R. W. Coakley and daughter, of Arcadia, were weekend guests of Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Sawyer and boys. Charles Edwards, of Omaha, is spending a couple of weeks here with his sister, Mrs. Karl Keyes. Quite a number of people from O’Neill were in attend ance at the grand reception given the president of the United States in Omaha this week. Even if it is nothing more or less than a crossroads PO.” 50 YEARS AGO October 14. 1897 After a trial lasting over a week, the jury in the case of the State of Nebraska vs. Wil liam McAllister, charged with the killing of Frank Cole near Stuart last Spring, returned a verdict of ‘‘not guilty” after about nine hours' deliberation. County Attorney Buler and R. R. Dickson looked after the interests of the state, while M. F. Harrington, J. J. Harring ton and C. E. Lear, of Keya Paha county, conducted the defense. Never since the booming days of 1884 and 1888 has there been so much lumber hauled out of O’Neill as there is this Fall. Scarcely a day passes that there is not half dozen large loads taken out of the town. O. O. Snyder, H. M. Uttley, J. C. Harnish, J. Bentley. J. F. Plunder, C. W. Hagensiek, B. Martin, H. Zimmerman, C. L. Bright and J. L. Mack went over to Butte Friday where they organized a lodge of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, with 21 charter mem bers. H. M. Uttley, acting as deputy grandmaster, had chaige of the work. 25 YEARS AGO October 12. 1922 Cotton soon may be waving in the fields of Holt county along side its acres of corn and alfalfa. That cotton al ready is one of the countv’s crops may not be generally known, but nevertheless L. E. Skidmore was awarded first premium on an exhibit of na tive grown cotton at the Ew ing livestock show and fair last week. Will Graves, Dr. L. A. Elkhorn Group Meets— The Elkhorn Project club hekf its regular meeting last Thurs day evening at the home of Mrs. Roy Lowry. Mrs. Robert Cook was assistant hostess.
