BLOOD CELL DISEASE
KILLS MANY CATTLE
Some twenty years ago a Kansas
veterinarian identifier t blood di
sease of cattle, previously unknown
in the United States. The disease
‘‘anaplasroosis’’ or pasture sick
ness" is in many ways like human
malaria, for it is caused by a tiny
parasite which attacks the red
/blood cells. Today, this disease has
"’'reached serious proportions — is
now present in at least 23 states
and has also been identified in
sheep. •
Anaplasxnosis is spiead from the
blood of one animal to another in
a variety of ways. It may be trans
mitted by mosquitoes, biting flies,
and ticks. Outbreaks have also
been traced to improperly steri
lized dehorning shears, castrating
knives, am. contaminated hypo
dermic needles. Any object which
contacts blood of an anected ani
mal, then punctures the akin of a
healthy animal, may transmit the
disease.
Symptons Include a quick drop
in weight and general condition

death, all tissues are abnormally

yet developed to prevent anaplaa

avoid introduction of the disease
