Art ojfsassfsas (/ PRIPARBD BY AMIRICAN FOUNDATION FOR ANIMAL HSALTM BLOOD CELL DISEASE KILLS MANY CATTLE Some twenty years ago a Kansas veterinarian identifier t blood di sease of cattle, previously unknown in the United States. The disease ‘‘anaplasroosis’’ or pasture sick ness" is in many ways like human malaria, for it is caused by a tiny parasite which attacks the red /blood cells. Today, this disease has "’'reached serious proportions — is now present in at least 23 states and has also been identified in sheep. • Anaplasxnosis is spiead from the blood of one animal to another in a variety of ways. It may be trans mitted by mosquitoes, biting flies, and ticks. Outbreaks have also been traced to improperly steri lized dehorning shears, castrating knives, am. contaminated hypo dermic needles. Any object which contacts blood of an anected ani mal, then punctures the akin of a healthy animal, may transmit the disease. Symptons Include a quick drop in weight and general condition dhd sometimes Jaund ce. The eye balls, lining of the mouth, and skin of the udders may have a yellow color. On examination after death, all tissues are abnormally yellow and the gall bladder great ly enlarged. Veterinarians are well acquaint ed with the areas where anaplas naosls is known td occur with fre quency. Hence, any sickness of thif Animals recovering from Ana plasmosts. nature noticed In newly arrived animals or In home herds on pas ture should be investigated Im mediately. Thera is no vaccine or serum as yet developed to prevent anaplaa mosis, hence it is important to avoid introduction of the disease Into new territories. Owners should also remember that recovered an imals act as carriers for a long time. Ridding animals of ticks protection from flies, and extreme care in using vaccinating and de horning equipment are essential lr prevention.
