BOWEN’S I ment Division of the Treasury Department. Pood products are under the War Food Administra tion, government plants come un der the jurisdiction of the Recon struction Finance Corporation, and everything that floats, the Maritime Commission. The gov ernment does not sell to indivi dual users but to dealers in the normal trade channels, and to government agencies and subdi visions. Treasury Procurement officials tell me that they are preparing lists of all farm equipment deal ers in the United States so that they can keep them informed of the things they have for sale. They suggest that anyone who wants certain kinds of equipment, ma chinery or vehicles should contact their dealers in their own com munities and urge them to get in touch with Treasury Procurement Regional Offices in their territory. The Regional Office for Nebraska is at *2605 Walnut Street, Kansas City 8, Missouri. The Division publishes the Surplus Reporter which lists the property for sale and tells how to acquire it. I re ceive the Surplus Reporter regu larly and have noticed many items that could be used by people. * * * CONFIDENTIAL The tendency of executive agen cies of government to suppress information about their activities, except that which they want to use for propaganda purposes brought about an incident that aroused the ire of Congressman Tarver, Democrat from Georgia, who heads one of the sub-com mitties of the House Appropria tions Committee. He had request ed information from the Foreign Economic Administration on the extent of exports of farm ma chinery. The report he received was marked “Confidential”. It made him so mad he placed the entire report in the Congressional Record. The report showed that 194 4 exports of farm machinery were nearly double those of 1943. A total of 247,376 farm tractors were produced in the United States in 1944 of which 41,037 were exported. We produced 308, 228 plows of which 35,004 were exported. The lists of exports in cluded 11,531 harrows, 5,406 drills, 13,761 cultivators, 1,587 grain binders, 1,222 combines, to name some of them. If the action of FEA is defendable in this mat ter it should have no hesitancy in making the figures public. In view of the food situation in the United States the people should know what their government is doing along this line. * * * FREIGHT RATES The recent action of the United States Supreme Court in agreeing to hear the case brought by the State of Georgia, through its Gov ernor, charging the railroads with a conspiracy in restraint of trade by fixing discriminatory freight rates against the south and west 'in favor of the northeast, may! have a widespread effect in Ne-1 I braska and other midwestern States. The Board of Investiga tion and Research set up by the 77th Congress to study the rate making policies of the Interstate Commerce Commission finished its work in 194 4 and made a report recommending that the Commis sion completely revamp its pres ent policies and end the rate prac tices of the railroads which favor the so-called ‘‘official territory” north of the Ohio and east of the Mississippi rivers. /trTZMsxz It’s smart to keep cool! 1 Women’s Playsuits $5.59 When the mercury in your house rises cool off in casual playsuit!
