CONFIDENTIAL
The tendency of executive agen
cies of government to suppress
information about their activities,
except that which they want to
use for propaganda purposes
brought about an incident that
aroused the ire of Congressman
Tarver, Democrat from Georgia,
who heads one of the sub-com
mitties of the House Appropria
tions Committee. He had request
ed information from the Foreign
Economic Administration on the
extent of exports of farm ma
chinery. The report he received
was marked “Confidential”. It
made him so mad he placed the
entire report in the Congressional
Record.
The report showed that 194 4
exports of farm machinery were
nearly double those of 1943. A
total of 247,376 farm tractors
were produced in the United
States in 1944 of which 41,037
were exported. We produced 308,
228 plows of which 35,004 were
exported. The lists of exports in
cluded 11,531 harrows, 5,406
drills, 13,761 cultivators, 1,587
grain binders, 1,222 combines, to
name some of them. If the action
of FEA is defendable in this mat
ter it should have no hesitancy
in making the figures public. In
view of the food situation in the
United States the people should
know what their government is
doing along this line.

FREIGHT RATES
The recent action of the United

a conspiracy in restraint of trade
by fixing discriminatory freight
rates against the south and west
'in favor of the northeast, may!
have a widespread effect in Ne-1

77th Congress to study the rate
making policies of the Interstate
Commerce Commission finished its
work in 194 4 and made a report
recommending that the Commis
