Free Tickets— School teachers'. 280 School Children . 2,800 Stockmen and Concession . 400 Complimentary tickets to preachers, priests, soldiers and sailors and their widows of the war of 1861 to 1865 . 55 3,535 The would have been 3,535 Free Tickets if all the people were there who had Free tickets, not counting the cf'icers. policemen and helpers at the fair. The reason that the fair was a success was because everyone con nected with the fair was working all the time, and on the Job all the time, from the time the Fair Commenced to the Close, and after that for a while. The Secretary coraled all the gates, all the light fixtures, all the ^plumbing, and have them at the house or at the office. Another thing; we have leased the barn for the winter to Levi Hull. Mr. Hull is to look after the barns and see that they are not destroyed, and now what we need is another big meeting and see what can be done about building a grandstand. The one we have is unsafe and is only one third big enough. If the business men will take ho’d of this fair it can be made the best fair outside of Lincoln. The Hog Exhibit was larger than at any fair except Lincoln and Stanton, and Stanton is in the center of the lar gest and highest priced Duroc hog community in the United States. Our hog exhibit was over 400, including pigs. The cattle department was not so good; we were short on horses also. If there is anything about the report that you don’t understand about the fair, come in and we will try and make everything clear to you. You are welcome—the books are public property for any one to look at at any time. JOHN L. QUIG, Secretary. We give below a list of unpaid claims against the Holt County Fail prior to the time that John L. Quig and Peter Duffy was elected to take charge. Some of those claims are three or four years old, and some are only of 1920. Am. Regalia Co.,Rock Island, 111 $13.45 Lincoln Letter Co.. 1.55 Rogers Tent and Awning Co.94.85 P. J. Snyder . 217.00 $3940.81 The writer attended the State Sec retary’s -meeting at Lincoln in 1922, and this debt of about $4000.06 is no debt at all for a County Fair Associa tion. Some of the secretaries said that their association was in debt as much as $50,000.00. Albion Fair As sociation contracted a debt of $30,000 to build a steel stadium or grand stand. Bloomfield grand stand was blown down during a cyclone in May, 1922, with no insuarnce. The secre tary called a business mass meeting of the businessmen of Bloomfield on or about May 15th, and aftea hearing the pai Oculars of the loss, the busi nessmen made up a purse of $3,000.00 in twenty minutes to rebuild the grand stand, and on May 16th a hun dred men volunteered to clear the fair grounds of the wreckage free of charge. Our neighbors of the east at Neligh, and Neligh always has a good fair went behind in 1922 over $1200.00, Butte in Boyd county went' behind $600.00 in 1922 Pierce In Pierce coun ty, the last report I had from them they were behind about $800.00. Stanton down near Norfolk with a much larger attendance every day than we had our best day went behind $1400.00. Every stranger that we talked to, and -many of them had at tended fairs over the state of Nebras ka, said that O’Neill put on the best Fair and show of any that they at tended. With all of our inexperience, high prices and no credit we only went behind $301.00 In 1921, and af ter putting on the biggest and best show of any local Fair In 1922 we still have a little money. I thank you. JOHN L. QUIG, Secretary. LOCAL BIRD LORE. Careful observation during the spring, summer and autumn of 1922 has revealed an astonishing variety of feathered creatures that make this city and vicinity their “home, sweet home.” The list below were positively identi fied on the grounds of the O’Neill Country club: Black-Billed Cuckoo, Northern Downy Woodpecker, Texas Wood Pecker, Red-Headed Woodpecker, Flicker, Nighthawk, Kingbird, Ar kansas Kingbird, Phebe, Yellow-Bel lied Flycatcher, Horned Lark, (Des ert; commonly known as “Snowbird.”) American Magpie, Blue Jay, Ameri can Crow, Clarke Nutcracker, Bobo link, Cowbird. Yellow-headed Black bird, Red-winged Blackbird, Meadow lark, Baltimore Oriole, Rusty Black bird, Brewer Blackbird, American Gold Finch, Western Gold Finch. Lapland Long Spur,. English Sparrow, Harris Sparrow, Field Sparrow, White-Winged Jur.co, Chewink, Dick cissel, Lark Bunting, Northern Shrike, Nashville Warbler, Palm Warbler, Oven Bird, Catbird, Brown Thrasher, House Wren, Brown Creeper, Black Capped Chickadee, Robin, Turtle Dove and Bluebird. Many other birds, resident in the Far East and Far West, pass through here, since we are about half way be tween the coasts. Someone has proposed that all golf links be made bird refuges. The tim bered section of the local grounds have been a protected refuge since the birth of the O’Neill Country club. Cats and crows have been given the absent treatment and today you can find all the winter and a few speci mens of summer birls yet on the premises. Half a dozen species never before known to nest in this vicinity are thought to have been attracted by the trimmed groves and absence of crows. Would you believe it if we said that less than a week ago half a dozen robins were seen in the grove west of the cemetery? No one could expect it. But there they were, and are, per haps, still in the vicinity. In addition to the list given above a number of other birds such as owls, sni'pe, hawks and terns were found. Oh, yes; a large bird with silver wings, green head and golden throat—• not yet identified. Who can describe a banshee? *** OR. J.
