Manuel, the fat bartender In the
Cafe Pasaje, looked sharply at the two
Americans leaning against the bar,
and when he was sure that he was un
observed he called his patron saint to
witness and then spit viciously in tho
direction of the hated Gringoes. Out
side the white tropical sunlight danc
ed in the deserted streets of La Sin
cerldad. A soldier was sleeping in
a doorway, and a small child, very
airily attired, peered curiously in at
tho door of the cafe at the two strang
ers. One of the Americans was tall
and straight and well groomed. The
other man's clothes bore mute evi
dence of having burn slept in many
times. The man himself looked badly
in need of a shave; ho was pale and
nervous, and smoVtd incessantly, light
ing one cigarette from the butt of tho
other.
“Bob,” said tho tall American, "I
have heard all sorts cf rumors. Did
you sell me out? As man to man, as
fellow country** en, hesr o' you to bo
square with me now if you haven’t be
fore. Let mo know where I stand,
what I am to expect. Have you sold
me out?”
The man in the much-worn Broad
way suit shrugged his shoulders.
“Didn’t you get the rifles bought of
me?”
“Why, yes; my men have 1,200 Mau
sers now, thanks to you. But—”
• Didn’t ycur gang get the cartridges
I put ashore from the fishing boat last
Tuesday?”
“Yes, we got the cartridges and the
two rapid ere guns that you brought
to us, too, although where you got
them I can’t imagine.”
“You gave me an order for 1,200
rifles and 300,000 rounds of car*.- igos.
I delivered the goods. You say you
got ’em. What's the kick?”
“Simply this,” went on the othfer
man. “You delivered the goods you
promised. But you are a fllibus er. A
filibuster, I understand, generally
plays tk -t and loose. He takes i.v• -ey
from all sides. I don’t say you nave
done this, but I’ve been told so. You
sold me gun?. I’m told you've sold
guns and cartridges to Col. Gonzales,
too. Consequently he's ready to strike
a blow, and I’ve got to fight, when I
thought that by getting a well equip
ped little army together Gonzales
would be afraid to start any trouble. I
engaged you first. You were m.v agent.
You had no right to get into the era
ployment of Gonzales. But what
could I expect, a f.ii—”
“Ona -nan's gold is as good as an
other's, isn't it?” asked the filibuster.
“There comes your other master,”
went on the tall American. “There’s
Gonzales. He doesn’t know, perhaps,
that you have been playing fast and
loose with us both. Why don't you
tel! him. It will nukv no difference,
though. If he is ready to fight, he’ll
fight. I know what it means in the
end. It means ruin to me, that’s all.
If I could have won out by the little
trick I was planning to turn on him
it would have settled everything. But
anyhow, I played the man; I wasn't
a sneak, and a cows id that—”
"Just cut that cut f >r the time be

ing,” said the filibuster, '"here's Gon
zales.”
The colonel entered the cafe blink
ing his eyes like an owl as he stepped
from the brilliantly lighted street into
the cool darkness of the cafe. He
I stopped in astonishment when he saw
llie filibuster and Bob Nelson together.
The filibuster called him over.
"Colonel,” said the filibuster, “my
friend, Mr. Martin, thought I ought to
acquaint you, with the fact that I have
sold him 1,200 stands of arms and eart
j ridges to match.”
The colonel shrugged his shoulders.
“1 know it,’ 'he said‘briefly. “For that
