having been filed in this office by John \V.
Hull, contestant, against timber culture
entry No. 6ft8ti, made ApriL *4, 1890. for the
NB&SW&of section 27, township 32 north
range D west, by Mary C. Sanders, in which
it is alleged that said Mary C, Sanders de
parted this life at O’Neill. Neb., In April, 1898,
and that her surviving children and sole
heirs a if*: Komaine Sanders of O’Neill, Neb ,
Etta N. Olsen, neo Sander*, of O’Neill. Neb.,
Frank O. Sanders of Grant county, Wis., U.
G. Sanders of Council Bluffs, Iowa, and
Grace Shauner, nee Sanders, of Oakland
City. 1ml., and th&teachof said surviving
children is over twenty-one years of age.
That said Mary O. Sanders wholly tailed to
plant or cultivate any portion of said tract
to trees, tree-seeds or cuttings or to other
wise cultivate said tract of land during the
2d, d.4th, th. 0th, 7th and 8tli years of her
said entry and that after her death her sur
viving chi'dren and sole heirs at law, above
mentioned, wholly failed to plant or culti
vate any portion of said tract of land to
trees, tree-seeds or cuttings or otherwise
cultivate said tract of land during the 9th,
10th, 11 tli, 12th and 13th years of said entry;
that at ih • termination of the first year of
-•aid entry there ^ere no living trees upon
said tract and that there are now no trees of
any kind growing upon said tract of laud;
that all of said failure still exists.
Said parties arc hereby notified to appear,
respond and offer evidence touching said
allegations at 10 o’clock a m. on November
18, 1903, before the register and receiver at
the United States land office in O’Neill, Ne
braska.
The said contestant, having in a proper
affidavit filed September 29, 1903, set forth

Manuel, the fat bartender In the
Cafe Pasaje, looked sharply at the two
Americans leaning against the bar,
and when he was sure that he was un
observed he called his patron saint to
witness and then spit viciously in tho
direction of the hated Gringoes. Out
side the white tropical sunlight danc
ed in the deserted streets of La Sin
cerldad. A soldier was sleeping in
a doorway, and a small child, very
airily attired, peered curiously in at
tho door of the cafe at the two strang
ers. One of the Americans was tall
and straight and well groomed. The
other man's clothes bore mute evi
dence of having burn slept in many
times. The man himself looked badly
in need of a shave; ho was pale and
nervous, and smoVtd incessantly, light
ing one cigarette from the butt of tho
other.
“Bob,” said tho tall American, "I
have heard all sorts cf rumors. Did
you sell me out? As man to man, as
fellow country** en, hesr o' you to bo
square with me now if you haven’t be
fore. Let mo know where I stand,
what I am to expect. Have you sold
me out?”

“Didn’t you get the rifles bought of
