Wb do not view with any great degree
of satiafaction this attempt to turn Ne
braska's delegates over to McKinley
with a ball and chain on each and every
one of them. McKinley is all right, but
there are other men who are all right
and we fail to see any existing emer
gency that should even suggest a
McKinley instruction, fie is a high
protectionist, it is true, but no man wbo
la not would think of asking for the
republican nomination in this yeai of
democratic mismanagement and business
depression. In cbosing a candidate
from among those already in the field it
would be difficult for tbe republican
convention to make a mistake. It would
be mighty poor politics to tie Nebraska's
delegation to the tail of any man’s pres
idential boom and we hope it will not be
done. __
Tub difference between a vigilante
organization and a "Protective Associa
tion" amounts to about as much ns
tbe difference between tweedledee and
tweedledum; a distinction without a dif
ference. An organization of cattle
men whose object is to prosecute thieves
and furnish evidence to the proper au
thorities is in itself not a bad thing, but
tbe great trouble is that it does not stop
where its duties and usefulness end.
Unprincipled fellows secure control of
the organization and divert it from tbe
channel in which it was contemplated it
should move, and then come holdups,
like that reported last week, and bang*
ing bees; men desiring to remove objec
tionable people take advantage of the
organization to commit deeds of out
lawery and they are permitted to go un
whipped of justice by the very band
that has for its motto, "Law and Order,”
Tbe workings of the organization in
this county should be sufficient proof
that it is a failure, and it is time for all
honest men—if any such there be—to
come out from among them.
