A Chicago grand jury bas decided
It:at Sunday base bail is not a breftch of
•he peace.
It is a misnomer to call that new
bond iseue a “popular" loan, in any
cense of the word.
1969,000,000, not to mention the inter*
est which w ill have to be paid on the
bonds, added to the public debt, in a
time of profound peace, in less than
three fears.
After all Ur. Bayard ought not to be
blamed if he concludes to reside perma
nently in England after he retires from
, office: he has lost the few friends be
had in this country.
It looks a great deal more business
like to see seven men acting as county
board. The old system was the most
expensive piece of foolishness ever per
petrated upon a county.
Whbjt Ur. Cleveland wares tbe atar
spangled banner he geti tbe plaudits of
the people every time, but when he
waves a 1100,000,000 bond issue he gets
something very different.
The Chambers Bugle doubts that the
board of supervisors ever invalidated
the official bond of Barrett Scott There
are men in evidence today who doubt
that Christ was crucified.
- —. - '
Did Secretary Olney really tell the
head of that bankers’ syndidate that ad
vertising for bids for those bonds was
v merely a little bluff, and that they
could pot in a bid with confidence in
its being accepted?
, Whih yon hear somebody say that
this or that man would decline the re
publican nomination for the presidency
just ask for a list of those who have de
clined that honor. You won’t get it for
the very good reason that it doesn’t
exist. - . _ :
The newspaper or individual, or
"cussed" set of Individuals who will
'uphold and laud a thief, is just as bad
as the thief hlmsolfBugle.
Tost so. We presume the same rule
will apply to the newspapers and indi
viduals who "uphold and laud” mur
derers.
.. .. ■
Although the matter hay not yet
beau acted upon we predict that the pop
isupervisors have their minds fully made
, up In regard to the disposition of the
bounty printing. From present indica
tions the work will be divided among
. the several populist papers of the
county, notwithstanding the low bids
on file by Tax Fnoimnn and others.

Bann’s a little object lesson showing
the difference between republican and
- democratic administration of national
finances: The negotiation of the bonds
representing the great war debt or
18,000,000,000 cost about 15,000,000,
while the Cleveland administration
allowed a syndicate to make more than
•10,000,000 on an issue-of 008,000,000 in
bonds.

- Tan old board of supervisors offered
a staading reward of 9900 for the arrest
and conviction of any cattle thief in
Holt county, but tbe county attorney
haadOd iai an opinion to tbe board Tu
esday, which says that such an offer of
reward is not authorised by statute,
'no statute says a reward may be offer*
ad for the arrest aad conviction of men
charged with crime, but it does not
seem to coatemplate offering a reward

A date for M00 under tbe resolution
of the old board is now on file with the
county dark. The reward is claimed

The state department undoubtedly
thinks It has done a very smart thing,
remarks the American Economist. The
advance sheets of the consular reports
for January contains a statement of ex*
ports declared at different foreign
countries, for the United States, during
the quarter ending September 80, 1805.
Similar statements previously published
also gave the total exports from each
country, os well as the totals for the
corresponding quarter in 1894. These
comparisons have been freely printed by
republican papers. They gave an idea
of the larger share of our markets that
is being acquired by foreign countries.
But we can now fish for this informa
tion. as the totals for each country are
not given, nor are the figures for the
1894 quarter. It is particularly signifi
cant, too, that in the statement of ex
ports from the United Kingdom, no
mention whatever is made of any ship
ments from Bradford, where the exports
of woolen goods for this year were
over 917,000,000 greater than for 1894.
Altogether, the state department’s latest
production is a very shoddy affair, and :
it is a waste of public money to print it
in such a condition.
