E. A. Howe and wife started
for Weatherord, Oklahoma,
Tuesday, to visit Mrs. Howe's
parents, J. L. Haith and wife,
and look at the country with a
pospect of locating.
Mrs. Dr. Matthews came over
from Phelps Wednesday and will
visit her mother for a few days.
The doctor went to Rockport that
evening, where he expects to re
main for sometimes.

The recent heavy rains have
washed the roads in places and
put them in bad shape. Between
here and Brownville some of the
hills were so badly washed as to
be almost impassable.
Oscar L. Minick recently went
down in Kansas to look at some
farm land, and a few days ago
bought 240 ffcPes 20 miles from
Abilene. He expects to move
out there in the spring.
We have been having some
heavy rains during the past week.
Last Friday the rainfall was 2:20
inches. Sunday night it was 1 :10
inches. Monday night and Tues
day it was .87 of an inch.
Ralph Ritchey returned home
last Friday evening, after visit
ing for three or four weeks with
his brother Frank in Colorado.
He also took in Denver, Pueblo
and other places of interest.
The wind blew off half of the
roof of a box car on the east
bound Beatrice freight last Fri
day 'afternoon, between Beatrice
and Rockford. Numerous wind
mills were blown down and other
damage done by the wind.
James Hiatt, who has been
visiting his son, Tom, in Oklaho
ma, returned to Nemaha last
Friday. He immediately sharp
ened his scythe and went to
cutting weeds, but is ready to
take a 30b of cutting hedge at
any time.

Ora J. Thorp loaded his car
last Friday and started for his
arm in western Colorado on the
north bound freight early the
next morning. His wife and
children started Mondav for
their new home. It is hoped
they will prosper and live long.

Curtis Brown, who has boon
visiting at Rosevillo, Ohio, for i

day morning. His aunt and
nnclo, Mr. and Mrs, Hoover, and
his cousin, Miss Grace Munford,
came homo with him. Thoy aro
from Rosevillo.
Eddio and Claud Maxwell, who

& Q. at Wymoro, have returned
home. Eddio came Saturday
and Claud Monday.
T. J. Rumbuagh bought back
some samples of corn from Re
publican City, Nebr., that does
not show signs of drouth. Tho
ears were twelve inches in length
well developed and of good size.

The storm of last Friday
caused several deaths in Johnson
county. Three men who took
refuge under a threshing ma
chine were killed by lightning.
A school house near Vesta was
blown over and two children
billed and several others badlv

David Frazier had a lively little
runaway Wednesday morning.
He was driving a young team
and they started with him at the
lumber yard, running north.
When they struck the crossing
they almost threw Dave out.
They turned into the sidewalk in
''ont of the meat market and
stopped without doing any dam
age. 1
Wm. E. Smilcy's house was
struck by lightning during the
storm last Friday afternooM.
The bolt struck the chimney,
loosening brick to about six
inches below the roof. It ran
down a rafter, tearing it to
pieces and loosening the shingles
for a.strip about six inches wide
down one side of the roof. Plas
tering was knocked off in one
room and soot scattered all over
the house. The bolt jumped
from one side of the room
straight across to the opposite
side, going out over the door,
tearing the casing and splintering
one board of the siding. For
tunately no one was at home at
the time. The house was not
set afire. As the house was in
sured, the loss will be made
good.
