It Is figured that Danny Maher,
the American jockey who will ride the

The cablo companies may have

The population of the ocean is es
timated at 3,000,000. That is to Bay,
the number of sailors and others
whoso business Is on the high seas
equals the inhabitants of the 13 orig

one-sixth of this ocean population or,
to bo more exact, 550,000 olllcers and

The Santa Fe railway system is !),
000 miles long nnd uses 2,000 ties to
tho mllo. Ties cost 00 cents each and
last on an average of b!x years. With
this as n basis it is figured that it
costs the road $4 a minute of every
hour of every day in tho year to buy
railroad crossties, not counting tho
expense of taking out tho old nnd
putting in tho new ones.
Thrift In the Went.
An impression prevails that tho
eastern states have tho largest num
ber of banks on the basis of popula
tion. Such, however, is not the case.
In Now England there Is one bank to
every 7,050 inhabitants, while in the
western states there is a bank to ev
ery 1,080 inhabitants. Furthermore,
Iowa has more banks on tho basis of
population than any other state in
the union.

Speaker Henderson deserves the
thanks of tho country for his courago
in enforcing tho rule of tho house
which prohibits smoking while the
house is in session. It has been a
great discredit to our national houso
of representatives that smoking has
been carried on more or less while
tho houso is in session and when tho
galleries have been packed with visit
ors, a large proportion of whom were
women. Speaker Henderson does well

Whatever may be the opinion as to
Andrew Jackson, the president, there
is only one view as to Ills generalship.
Tho defense of New Orleans proved
him a military ginius. Theodore
lloosovelt declares him the greatest
American commander between tho
revolution and civil war. Soma vic
tories over tho Mexicans were appar
ently greater achievements than the
triumph at New Orleans. Hut tho
Mexicans wore not comparable to the
veterans under Pakenham who had
put to illght Napoleon's armies.

There were 118 legal executions in
the United States during tho year
1001, ono less than during 1900. Of
those executed 71 wero negroes and
47 whites. It Is somewhat signifi
cant that, ns compared with 1000, the
number of negroes is increased 13
and the number of whites decreased
13, the figures for 1000 being, negroes,
58; whites, 00. The south hnd 82 of
the executions and tho north 30, the
ratio being about the same as last
year, when tho figures were 80 in tho
south nnd 30 in the north.
I.yiiehliiKn In 1001.
Tho lynchlngs for tho. year 1001
number 135, as compnrod with 115 In
1500, an inereaso of 20. Of these 121
occurred in the south nnd 14 in the
north, as compared with 107 In tho
south nnd 8 in the north in 1000. The
number of negroes lynched in 1901
wna 107, tho samo number as in
1000. Curiously enough tho principal
crimes which led to these lynchlngs
are almost tho same in tho two years,
being 39 for murder in 1001 and 1900;
19 for criminal assault in 1901 and Id
for criminal assault in 1000.
