'; J.' V Uvo; J - COLD IN THE HEAD fs tho First Chapter In thp History 'of Chronlo Disease. A cold In tho hoad Is tho flrst chap ter In tho history of dlacnao anil dcnth. This has boon so often repeated that thero aro fow people Indeed who have not wltnesood many examples of It. A cold In the head Is rarely severe enough to confine a vigorous person to tho house. As a rule, It ends In recovery without any treatment This has led many people to regard a cold In tho head as of no Importance. It Is a terrlblo mistake, however, to pass by a cold In tho head as a trivial mat ter. Every caso Bhould bo treated. Thoso who have used Peruna for such cases will testify unanimously that a few doses Is Bufflclent to re move every vestiges of tho cold. How much better It Is to treat a cold In this way than it is to allow it to go on and on for weeks, perhaps months, leaving effects that will never bo eradicated. Yot thero aro thoso who neglect to take Peruna for a cold In the head. This neglect la duo to the false notion that a cold in tho head is hardly worth noticing. A cold In tho head Is In reality a caso of acuto catarrh. It ought to bo called bo, In older to awaken people from their lethargy on this subject. In a large per cent, of cases cold In tho head will end In chronic catarrh. Un less properly treated with some such remedy as Peruna, perhaps 50 per cent, of cases of cold la tho head will iy the foundation for chronic catnrrh. A tablespoonful of Peruna should bo taken at tho very first symptom of iold in tho head. Usually where tho told is not very cevero a tablespoonful Df Peruna boforo each meal and at bed tlmo Is sufficient. It may be neces sary, however, whero tho attack is moro serious, to koop strictly In tho houso and tako a tablespoonful of Peruna every hour. Younger people, feeblo or delicato women, should tako a teaspoonful every hour. Don't Persecute Your Bowels Cut out cathartics and purgatives. Superintendent of Men Moody BiU IniMule, Chicago TKXT "Holding forth tlio word of life." Phl 1.16. In writing to tho church at Phillppl which he had just founded Paul urgcB upon thorn two things: First: Thnt thoy bo blameless rind hnrmlosB. or in other words that thoy live a consistent Chris tian Ufa. Second ly: That thoy form tho habit, of holding forth the word of Ufa to others. Paul then goes on to cay that If these Phlllpplan church mem bers wero satisfied simply to Bet n consistent cxnmple, and did not also engage In personal effort to help tho unsaved ho should consider his labor upon theso as well nigh lost. Tho ease with which ono can do this work, nnd tho blessing which usually accom panies It makes It almost Inexcusable for us to neglect It. On ono occasion 1 handed a little card to n man asking If ho would llko something to read. On It ho saw tho uord Christian, nnd at onco ho said with a sneer. "'Christian,' yc3, I have neighbors who nro Christians, and I have some who are not, and tho lntter are moro neighborly and more honor able In business every time." "That may be," I said, "but remember that It Is not their religion which makes your neighbors mean nnd dishonorable, but the lack of It, and It Is not fair to blame Jesus Christ for what does not belong to him." Then I added, "It may bo thnt you do not feel tho need of a Savior now. but tho time will surely come when you will feel It." "I guess I need him enough now. My wife died about a year ago, and since then 1 have lost my daughter. My homo is broken up nnd I haven't anything left to llvo for." The man's voice trembled, nnd tho tears began to come. I saw that I had touched a tender chord, and I said, "My friend, If there Is any ono on this earth that needs Jesus Christ, I think you are tho man."1 Then I held up Christ ns a comforter and told him how willing Christ was to come Into his snd heart'and mako It glad, nnd Into his desolate homo and mako It bright with heavenly hopes. Then, taking It for granted that ho did not know how to flad Christ. I went on to explain the way of salvation. Then I said. "Now my friend, with this un understanding of 'what it is to bo. come a Christian, are you willing to accept Christ as your Savior right here and now, and glvo mo your hand on it?" "Yes sir. I am," he replied, nnd he grasped my hand heartily. Then we removed our hats, and I prayed, and ho prayed, after which ho gave mo his name and told mo all about himself. This was at a county fair In tho midst of nolso nnd con fusion. Horses were racing, fakirs were shouting and the merry-go-round was In full blast. And yet In tho midst of that surging crowd this man with bared head wns confessing his sins to God and Inviting Jcsub Christ to come Into his heart. It is a great aid in opening conver sation with strangers to have with you a variety of leaflets or gospel cards. You can hand one to a person saying, "Would you llko something to read?" If ho dqes not express an opinion, you enn give him another, saying, "This one Is a little dlffeient," or "Hero 1b one which I think you w 111 enjoy." By this mean you gradually become ac quainted, and by and by you can give him one which presents tho way of salvation plainly, and ask him If he has accepted Christ as his Savior. Sitting in a hotel in Denver I was reading a newspaper. By my side bat a young man talking with two others. Soon he uttered an oath. Taking out a little card entitled. "Why Do You Swear?" I laid it down on tho arm of the chair between us, and wont on reading. He picked It up and read It. As soon ns his companions left ho said to me. "My friend, that is tho best thing on swearing I ever saw. It la an awful habit I know and I ought not to do it, but you see I am a newspa per man on the Chicago Inter Ocean. I am thrown In with a rough crowd and I cannot seem to overcome tho habit." Ho thon went on to tell me about himself and wo had a long heart to heart talk Remember ho began tho conversation, and ho did most of the talking. When we have ascertained ono'a real position, tho next thing is to lead him to accept Christ. Tho main ob ject Is not to lead people (o glev up their bod habits, or to attend church, or even to Join thn church, but rather to accept Christ as their personal Lord and Master. Wo should then show them from God's word that thoy have forgiveness of pins nnd eternal life CActs 10:43; John 3;3C). They should also bo Instructed In the duties of tho Christian life, espe cially tho duty of confessing ChrlBt publicly, and tho habit of daily prayer and Bible reading. flATURE MUST BE IMITATED No Matter How Water Is Applied, Air and Blazing Sun Will Take Up Much Moisture. It Is tho Irrigator's business to lml tnto nntural conditions ns closely na possible At tho very beginning ho Is handicapped by tho conditions that make irrigation necessary. No mat ter how ho applies IiIr water, tho dry air and tho blazing sun of tho arid re gion will through rapid evaporation deprive him of n large part of tho moisture. In other words, it requlies moro irrigation water than rain water to moisten tho same area of soil to the same 'depth and degree of satura tion. Even after ho has succeeded In getting tho water into tho soil, tho avorago Irrigator does not know whero It goes or whnt becomes of It. As long ns Irrigation water was plentiful nnd tho Irrigated nrea Email, loss of molaturo through wasteful methods failed to attract attention. With small regard to water economy, giving no thought to tho damage In flicted upon both land and crop through cxcosbIvo molsturo the farm ers after leveling their fields flooded them, allowing tho wnter to seek Its way witnout much guidance or nt tempt nt proper distribution. Tho, check or baBln method under which tho area to bo irrigated is divided by ridges Into rectangular basins of equal slzo brought about better distribution, but It did not reduco ovaporntlon losses and It Interfered with tho use of fnrm Implements. Under this meth od enormous evaporation losses wero caused by the moistening of the en tire surface and early cultivation was mndo Impossible. Of lato years thq most progressive Irrigators havo adopted the furrow method wherever possible, especially in orchards and vineyards. Heat and wind movemont Increase evaporation. A reduction of tho tern poraturo by seven dogreerf will, ac cording to investigations, decrcnBo tho rato of evaporation from water sur faces one-tenth of nn Inch a day Heat and wind movement as causes of evaporation aro strongest nt tho sur face of the soil. Observations in the arid region have frequently shown 'jcmperaturos of 135 degrees nt the surface of unshaded soil, with a do creaso of from twenty to thirty do groes fivo Inches bolow tho Burfaco. Furrow Irrigation, therefore, by less ening the area moistened, by protect ing tho water from wind and from the nigh surface temperatures, makes n larger percentage of It avallablo for tho uso of tho plants. FOLLY OF OVER IRRIGATION Water In Plant Growth Is No More Important Than Proper Supply of Air and Temperature. Last summer the writer of this article was visiting a farm and noted the stunted, yellow appearance of n Held of spring wheat. "I don't know why tho wheat should look so sickly. I havo Irrigated it three times already this spring," said the farmer, and right thero wns tho solution of his problem, says a writer In the Utah Farmer. Tho delicate wheat plant needs warmth and sunshine nnd nlr If it Is to thrivo, but this thoughtless farmer was Just pouring on tho cold moun tain water until the wheat had nenrly given up tho strugglo for existence and Buccumbed to tho Ignorance nnd nvarlco of tho owner. Ho had nn nbundanco of water and thought that he had better uso It while thero was plenty. Tho field was already satur ated by tho frequent and generous stormn, and adding moro only tended to keep the soil cold and the plants stunted. What tho wheat field really did need was a good harrowing to break tho crest and fncllltate the en trance of air and sunshine. With such treatment tho plants would havo become healthy and vigorous, tho soil would have retained Its moisture, and .thero would have been a much better condition all around. Fnrmem miiHt learn tho lesson sooner or later that water in plant growth Is no moro Im portant than Is air and temperature If tho soil Is saturated with water thero is no room for soil air, and as there is such an excess of water that there is constant evaporation going on tho soil will be kept cold and growth will bo retarded. Irrigate less, culti vate moro should be tho motto of every progressive farmer. PUT TREES IN WASTE PLACES Can Be Planted When Other Farm Work Is Not Pressing and Will Furnish Needed Timber. Why not set out Locust and Catalpa trees in wnsto places, such as small corners of Holds, small fields thaUire cut off by creeks or ravines, rough lnnds, briar and brush lots nnd other places thnt cannot be worked to ad vantage, and grow post timber. Tho trees enn bo Bet out when nthnr fnrm work Is not pressing and In a very few years will furnish all of tho post tim ber needed on tho farm. The work of getting tho trees started costs no moro than keeping down weeds. If set In rows eight or ten feet apart and culti vated for about three yearB tho trees require no further attention. Man of tho out-of-the-way places that aro producing scarcely anything of value, besldo being an eye-sore to tho farm, can bo set to valuable trees at very llttlo expense. In this way ragged corners and ravines can bo trans formed Into fine groves that will pay largor profits than some of tho other portions of tho farm. Then tho matter of having plenty of post timber right at hand Is one of importance in these days of timber scarcity OH! MY BACK!
