Rev. Porter, recently appointed pas
tor of the Methodist church of this
city, arrived in town this morning and

'Under Southern Skies," a play that
hns been presented here in the past but
is a good one, is booked at the Keith for
the latter part of this month,
Supt. Tout, of tho city schools, went
to Grand Island this morning and will
spend tho day examining work in the
schools of that city.
Mr. and Mrs. Isaac Deats, who had
been in Pennsylvania during the sum
mer, returned to town last night. Dur
ing their absence Mrs. Deats submitted
to an operation and was in a hospital
for four months.
Family Reunion.
A family reunion will be held at tho
B. P. Baker home Sunday when Mr.
and Mrs. Bilker will have with them
their sons E. P. Baker, of Morrison,
III., E J. Baker, of Cambridge and
B. D. Baker of Dickens, also their
daughter, Mrs. Cosselmnn, of Sheri
dnn, Wyo. Tho three sons will be ac
companied by their families'. It will
certainly be a pleasant reunion.
Bert Brown Badly Scalded
Bert Brown, who 1ms charge of the
clam-shell scoop nt the Union Pacific
ice lake, was badly scalded by steam
yesterday afternoon, the burns affect
ing his hands, face and legs. His in
juries aro so serious that it is tho pres
ent intention to send him to an Omha
hospital for treatment.
The accident was duo to tho breaking
of the clamp which held thn scoop
rigid, and when this broko the car con
taining tho engine and boiler toppled
over, allowing the steam to escape.
Mr. Brown was thrown in Buch a posi
tion that ho could not get away from
the released steam in time to avoid
being scalded. As soon as he could
get to his feet ho ran nnd jumped into
tho lake, which cooled off tho heated
clothing, elso the burn 3 on legs would
have been worse.
Will Remodel Store Room.
Tho room occupied by Schatz & Cla
baugh will bo placed in the hands of
carpenters noxt week and will bo com
pletely remodeled nnd refurnished. A
new prism glass front wiil be put in,
also prism glass windows in tho rear. A
metal ceiling will bo put on and tho
rear deck will bo rebuilt, tho latter oc
cupying but half the widthof the room.
The store will be supplied with new
furnishings, handsome wall cases sup
planting tho ordinary shelving, and
tables taking the place of counters.

ment; L. C. Swan, Pastor Department;
J. H. Van Cleave, Temperance Depart
ment. It is desired that every school in tho
county cooperate in this movement to
brjng together the working forces that
more effectual work may be accom
plished to tho end that the Master's
Kingdom may bo extended.
Every school in tho county is urged
to send tho name and address of its
superintendent, and a copy of the con
stitution and by-laws will bo forwarded

Joseph wheeler, who made a break
for liberty yesterday morning but was
recaptured, was given a one year sen

Grimes this morning. Wheeler rplead
