clasB condition.

lope precinct Wednesday. He says
that there has been more land sold
in that vicinity within the past
sixty days than in five years pre
vious to that time. The Union
Pacific has contracted the major
portion of its land there.

A local builder is of the opinion
that the number of houses built

M. C. Harrington returned Wed
nesday night from Kanaas City
where he had been upending several
days looking after his duties as
chairman of the Nebraska head
quarters committee. He is quite
enthusiastic over the rooms which
they succeeded in obtaining and
says that everv indication in that
the Nebraska delegation will be the
most important one there but that
they will be fully prepared to dis
pense hospitality in right royal
faahlon.
W. C. Elder recently, returned
from a trip to the southern part of
the county and he says that every
acre of ground that has ever been
broken will be planted this year.
The acreage of small grain which
has already been planted is very
large larger than any precccding
year, Rye is up and looking good.
There is quite a demand for farm
land .to lease and some property is
changing hands at a very fair figure
The majority of the farmers are
very much pleased over the outlook,

The annual high school declama
tory contest will be held at Lloyd's
opera house this evening. The
prices of admission will be fifteen
and twenty-five cents. The follow'
ing pupils of the high school will
take part in the program: the
Misses Anna Flynn, Mamie Cronin,
Bessie Finney, Mary Russell, Mary
Sullivan, Lulu White, Sadie Bake-
well, Adell Lytic and Willie Verner,
O. E. Edstrom, John McNicol and
Karl Newton. The recitations
which will be given by them run
tue entire gauntlet ot expression
from grave to gay. It bids fair to
be quite an interesting contest and
all of those who are interested in
the work of. our schools ought to
give an evidence of it by atteuding
this contest. The winners will
represent the high school in the
district contest which will be held
here April 26th.

Mr. W. II, Wolic, of Locksport,
Illinois, a gifted and experienced
evangelistic singer, is expected to
arrive here next Tuesday evening
to assist his brother Rev. II. A,
Wolfe, in a series of meetings be
ginning next Wednesday evening,
April 4th, and continuing until
Easter. Rev. Wolfe will preach an
introductory sermon next Sunday
evening, addressed more particular
ly to christian people on the subject
"The Essentials to a Spiritual
Awakening." An invitation is ex
tended to everybody toatteud these

The next rehearsal of the chorus
which is to sing at the grand con
cert in the opera house April 17th,
will be held in the Lutheran church
next Tuesday evening. As this
will be the last rehearsal in the
church before the scries of meetings
begin every member of the chorus
is earnestly requested to attend tile
'rehearsal.

cently been put into seryice on the
Omaha and St. Louis road and is
attracting considerable attention

Wm. E. Price and Edward Eas
ton, jr., a boy about fifteen years
of age, were up before Judge Bald
win yesterday charged with assault
and battery upon one of the
Beightel boys. They were both
found guilty and Price was fined
three dollars and costs. The boy
was also given a light fine. The
two boys were fighting and accord
ing to the testimony Price was
aiding and abetting them. They
fought for nearly three quarters ot
an hour.
